First time visitor

Hi everyone,
We had originally planned to visit Plakias this coming Spring, however work commitments has put paid to that!
Myself, wife and twelve year old daughter now plan to visit NEXT Easter, we are keen walkers and spring is always our favourite time overseas.

Could all you Plakias regulars please help with any of the following,
1. Easter falls about mid April next year, what weather can we expect then ?
2.Will resort be up and running this early ?
3.We plan to visit Plakias independantly, accomodation...no probs, however we are struggling for information on flights, we live in the north east so Newcastle is our prefered choice but feel we may have to use Manchester, can anyone who has visited the area this early offer best options.

There appear to be occasional flights from Newcastle in April but more from Manchester.

If you drive or take a taxi it takes about an hour and a half.

Almost every time we have holidayed in Plakias it has been aroung Easter time, the weather has always been fine in the main, hot enough to be in shorts and t-shirts during the day although it can get cool in the evening.  I can honestly say there has only been a very occasional day (perhaps one or two) over the many years we have been there at this time, where the day has been overcast and only one occasion in memory that it has been raining (and that day it was torrential!!!).  So I can vouch for the fact that overall the weather has been great!

The resort is up and running in April around Easter time although obviously it will be quieter than in peak season.  The town itself and the area tends to be quieter and the tavernas to empty earlier at this time than later on in the summer and the discos and bars, should you be interested in them, normally do not open this early in the season, although I do know that the locals frequent them in the early hours.  Generally though, Plakias is fairly quiet at this time of year.  Note that 1st May is a holiday in Crete (and possibly the rest of Greece) and the town is normally buzzing at this time with the locals strutting their stuff in town and flower garlands abounding.  I have never seen so many cars in Plakias at any time other than May 1st!  The season generally is determined by when the Austrian and German tourist seasons begin but as it is Greek Easter normally the week following our Easter, there is usually enough people around for most tavernas and shops to warrant opening.

We have always flown from Manchester and flights seem to be pretty easy to get from there.  I cannot vouch for the North-east - you would have to enquire further as to availability, but usually the season begins in April for Crete rather than 1st May as for the rest of Greece so you may get lucky.  As others have said, the best bet is to look on the net as to what flights are available from your area.

Hi All

I just wanted to add a note about flights, we usually use flightline via the web. Last year we noticed that they reduce their flight close to the departure date, so this year, we have decided to book our accomodation and book the flight  as close to that date as we can.

We paid about £150 last year, and noticed that they then reduced the flights to as low as £59! for 14 days.  We have been keeping an eye on them so far this year, and they have reduced them  already for April. Although looking at other destinations, we have noticed that the lowest prices seem to be between £60-£70, but that will still be a big reduction.  

You have to be brave and hope that you can get the date that you want.
