'When I was there in 1999 the beach you describe wasn't a farenders one. Maybe you set a trend though.'

When needs must.

It was quiet though!

Hi Graham  Karen

the resort of Arillas on Corfu is ok. Turn right when facing the sea walk for 10 mins, nice easy walking flat sand plenty of space and a good few people all nude. No beach bar, but only a short walk back for the beer. The resort it self is only small but all you need.

Cheers

Keef

We have stayed in San Stephanos on Corfu several times .... one of the the reasons being the very good "far end"
However, its facilities are considerably less than those of Plakias. No showers or taverna but an easy walk on soft sand through the main beach (heading West)
The cliff is formed of soft, shale-type rock which dissolves easily in the water. On several occassions we have been joined by frolicking German people adorning their otherwise naked bodies with said mud ... indeed they had remembered their own coloured body paint to enhance the effect. Many ladies take a supply of the dry rock home for cosmetic purposes as it is said to be good for the skin.
We stopped visiting there when it became "Thompsonised" about 5 years ago but it remains a lovely spot and there is an easy walk over the Eastern cliff to the next bay which was less developed but which had a serious windsurfing school
Of couse we are comparing the resort now with the idyll we think we remember when we were much younger and you may enjoy mixing with predominantly English speaking fellow visitors
We wish you a lovely relaxing break whever you decide to go

Now I come to think of it there was a lot of this going on at Gerakas beach on Zakynthos as well.

So as not to mislead anyone, the beach on Rhodes near Haraki George referred to is called Agathi, I think, rather than Amoudi and although it may be naturist very early or late certainly isn't at other times (unless it has altered drastically since I was there). It's a pity as Haraki is a very nice spot but without a decent beach. Unfortunately for the good folk of Haraki, Manos has dropped it for 2006. Kosmar still features it.

If anyone knows of a Plakias like resort on Rhodes I would be pleased to know of it as it has the most reliable weather in Greece but some really grotty resorts.

Mike

Your right Mike, it is Agathi, I was fed duff info.

I know Rhodes very well after 11 visits and there is nowhere like Plakias anywhere on the Island. Haraki is Plakias in miniture.
The only place that might have come close is Pefkos, just south of Lindos, but the last time I was there 2001, it was getting out of hand with the commercialism and all the new buildings.
There is absolutely nothing on the NW coast and all the beaches over there are S****Y!
Best beach other than Agathi was Sambika or the far SE end of (sorry) Faliraki.
I never thought I would see that name on this site!

And your right Mike, it never rained!!

Thanks for all the information. In the end we booked a cheap Ryan Air flight to Sardinia - looks an interesting place ... we shall see.

For completeness, let me tell you we are back, having had a great time in Alghero. I have to say, the sea and beaches in the area were the best I seen in the Med. Walking is better in the Plakias area. Outside the city, it's very sparcely populated but the villages are quite widely separated and it seemed that nearly all the land belonged to someone so fences and walls meant that our walks were confined to the roads. Interesting buildings with plenty of history. The countryside is very green, this time of year with a wide variety of wild plants (we saw 3 different orchids). Food and drink (in the city) is more expensive than in Plakias. People are friendly but fewer people speak English than in Plakias so some knowledge of Italian would be handy. Alghero airport is close to the city - we were at our B+B within 30 minutes of the plane landing! We would go again but it hasn't lessened our desire to return to Plakias.
