We have just returned from our first visit to Plakias.  We loved the place and the people. Thanks to George who made us interested enough to visit.
However, we heard a rumour (from 2 different sources) that the Meltemi music bar is not having its license renewed when it expires at the end of the season, and that there are plans afoot to build a 300 bedroom hotel on the site and adjoining land. Does anybody on the site have any further information? Those of you who are still to go to Plakias this year (lucky devils) please could you investigate.

Hello, are already 3 or 4 years that I have heard that Meltemi will be closed and there will be built a big residence or hotel. I have spoken with people of Plakias and they said that the owners of the land where is built Meltemi (probably the Alianthos owners) have no so much money to spend and maybe it would not be a good business too for them. But anyway, every year passes I see Meltemi always more empty.

Judging by how quiet Plakias was in July (admittedly before the UK school hols) I can't imagine a 300-bed hotel would make good business sense for anyone, in fact it might well drive away some of the Plakias die-hards.

the alianthos owns the land that the meltemi is built on and have been threatening to knock it down for a few years now to build there 5 star hotel
the owner said it will still be open next year (he seems to be going on a year to year bases with the promise of alot of notice before they close)
i have to admit being one of the die hards that wouldn't be happy to see the meltemi shut - its been part of my holiday for many many years..........and even though i would hate to see the place turn into malia i still believe that you need something for everyone too get more people of all ages interested in the place.
one of my contacts in plakias who has nothing to do with the meltemi said that the amount of money needed for this hotel was so large that the bank aren't going to give the money to the alianthos....so i hope the bank thinks like rodger and has decided its a bad bussiness idea.......LONG LIVE THE MELTEMI

just had a wee panick attack   that i could be wrong and phoned phillipous incase things had changed from july when i was there - the meltemi will definetly be open next year

have to eat my words here and am p****d off   to say that the meltemi wont be there this year. spoke to ali and filippos(the owner) and he said that the land owners have decided that they want to start building this year, so its getting pulled down.  as for the new building - i think its going to be a 5 star hotel i know the meltemi is not for everyone but its been there for 22 years and kinda feels like a bit of the furniture

Sad news :'(    I have spent a couple of hours there too. Even worked there in '91. Hmm...      Memories are rising slowly.....        
                    I'll come back to that an other time.

I'm another one who will be sad to see Meltemi close.
When I first visited Plakias I was with a friend who loved to dance - and she dragged me in there most nights (though I didn't protest too much)
I still try to get there at least once most holidays.
It has varied a lot over the past few year - usually depending upon the DJ - some of the recent ones didn't seem to match my tastes!
Sadly, it does seem less busy every year.

As for the hotel idea - I'll believe it when I see it. But I agree, the last theing the village needs is another Happimag!
