A very wet start to the year?

Assuming that the data supplied on the meteo website by medousa is accurate, in the first seven weeks Plakias has seen more rain (644mm) than in the whole of 2014!

2014 was overall it appears was also a much wetter year for this area than in previous years.

If the data is 100%, then this is wetter than what we have witnessed in the UK.

My home location of Coventry had around 60-70mm of rain in both December 2014 and Jan 2015 (120mm approx), compared to the figures of around 700mm for Plakias for the same period!

Do these figures stack up with what has actually happened?

Well, some of the photos shown on the Crete forum showed horrendous amounts of snowfall. Certainly far more than here in East Anglia.

From the webcams it looks as though it has been wet in Plakias recently...the road gives it away as it changes colour when wet (becomes a darker, shiny, grey). Just had a look now and it seems to be stormy today...just hope the sun comes out soon (here and there !).

I think I am correct in saying that all parts of Greece have higher annual rainfall than London. It is distributed differently over the year though (i.e. less in summer).

Can't speak for Plakias, where we've had the odd rainy day, but on other Greek islands, late in September/early October, we've experienced days of pretty much constant, torrential, rain.

Haven't checked the figures, but wouldn't surprise me at all if Greek islands 'wetter' overall, but with more pronounced seasonal trends than the UK.

This year Greece has faced an increase in south winds. These winds usually bring rain, dust and high temperatures. This is mostly the reason for the high levels of humidity. Plakias, as well as almost all southern part of Crete, is more vulnerable to south winds.
