Stelios Taverna in Lefkogia
« on: June 19, 2008, 10:56:51 PM »
We stay with friends who live in Asomatos  (lucky devils) when we come to stay in Crete. We have a favourite taverna in Lefkogia that we eat in frequently at lunchtimes (at night it is a strictly Greek place). As Brian and Kathy are known to Stelios (and his lovely wife Stella) we don't get the "tourist menu" but a greeting of "what would you like?"
he has the most wonderful lamb chops (from his own flock)and virtually any dish "with tomato sauce"
      • "lamb with tomato sauce"
      • "beef with tomato sauce"
      • "chicken with tomato sauce"
      • "pork with tomato sauce"
        "rabbit in tomato sauce"
      • "tomato with tomato sauce!!!"
      [/li]
He is a real gentleman and when he knows you he gives you free wine and endless raki after the meal.

We discovered that Stella has a soft spot for chocolates and when we gave her a (relatively small) box of Thornton's chocolates on a return visit we were given endless wine and a litre bottle of Raki to bring back home!

I recommend that you try it if you are travelling out of Plakias itself.

I agree that Stelios Taverna is very good. We went there 3 years ago for lunch on one of the train trips. The meatballs in tomato sauce was gorgeous, and we would have returned there this year if the train had been running, but were unsure if the taverna was still in the same hands, and didn't want to fork out for a taxi if we were to be disappointed that Stelios had gone.
Now we know we shall make the efort on our next holiday to Plakias.
Perhaps this deserves an addition to the article system?

I'll have my first attempt at adding something to the Plakias map and pinpoint it

You really know how to make me jealous!
We had to cancel going to Plakias this year, and were really disappointed to miss out on all the wonderful tavernas in and around Plakias.
Maybe next year we will get lucky and return.
