Paleochora

Hi There Plak People,

I have been many times to Plakias and quite frankly we love it !

Anyway was thinking of going back to Paleochora (went once a few years back and rather liked it).

However the crux of the matter is that there seems to be no holidays companies that do Paleochora from the UK !

Anyone know anything different ?..I thought someone like Simply Crete would have done it..but it seems not.

Anyway I look forward to any answers !

Now Kosmar are broke, there seems to be a market slot for a greek specialist!

However, why go by package? Why not book a flight to Chania (try to avoid Monarch who seem very dodgy - large overcrowed planes, very cramped seats, awful customer complaints system), book a cab to take you from the airport to Paleochora (90 Euros each way, 1hr 30 mins duration) , book a studio or hotel (we recommend http://www.zafirihotel.gr/ ); bob's your uncle!

All bookings easily made on the internet. It's cheaper, nicer than a tour operator taking you from the airport in a coach, wide choice of rooms/flats/hotels!

Did this in September 2010 and had a great time - I think I prefer Paleochora to Plakias anyway (have now been to Palochora twice and Palkias 5 times over 30 years).

It's easy enough to book a fight to Hania and get a hire car to Paleochora

I have stayed here a few times , lovely people and great apartments

Unless you want a specific place such as that recommended by Harribobs, then we have been travelling to Paleochora, Plakias Loutro & Sougia in September for some 13 years and have never found the need to prebook accommodation. That way you are not tied,  it can be interesting checking out various properties & you can move on when you want to.

I visit both Paleochora and Plakias when I go to Crete. No need to take a taxi from Chania to Pal. You do need a taxi from the airport to Chania bus station (about €25) then take the bus to Pal. It's a lovely ride and a fraction the cost of a taxi. Timetables are on the web. Pal has a good "far end", though not as good as Plakias other than a taverna on that part of the beach.
I recommend Taverna Castello to stay. Superb position at the head of the beach with clean simple rooms, a lovely chap running the place and great breakfasts (extra charge).  Taverna Inochoos to eat; on the main town centre street and much better than any of the sea front places I tried.
I'll be there first week in July and then I take the buses from Pal to Plakias for another two weeks. Then the local buses from Plakias to Heraklion to fly home. What better (and cheaper) way to get around?
As much as I like Pal there's nowhere else like Plakias!

There is a bus that runs from the airport direct to Chania bus station (fare: €2.30) but unfortunately it is nowhere near as frequent as the service in Heraklion.

Yes, there is a bus from Chania airport but it runs only five times a day. Therefore, it's necessary to take a taxi to the bus station.

Just checked the timetable, and the frequency of the service has been increased and improved in scope. Depending on the direction of travel and day, there are now 8 - 11 buses running daily.  Anyone thinking of using public transport would do well to check the timetable beforehand in case there is a service that covers his arrival/departure so that he can save himself some money.
