From Plakias to Shinaria beach....

Just back from another visit to Crete...and my first one to the Plakias area.
In previous years we've visited the northern part of this colourful island (Aghia Marina/Ghania, Stalis/Malia) and immediately fell in love...
but now especially on the southern part of Crete... namely the area in and around Plakias.

It was really superb and I particularly enjoyed the authentic area and people... hope it will not become too touristic in the near future!
Besides Plakias, I loved the Souda beach and especially the Shinaria beach. Both very close to Plakias, the beach itself as well as the trip (passing a variety of goats in the hills on our way to Shinaria) offer a great view and provide a great time!

Anyway, our plan is to get back there next year again and explore some more areas.

UPDATE FEBRUARY 2009:
YESSSSSSS, here's the latest news: we're going back to this beautiful area in July/August 2009....
and this time we'll be going for a full 3 weeks...
allowing us to enjoy and explore this area even more!!

So who knows, we might be catching up then with some of you....
anyway, looking forward to July/August 2009.....

i was quite disturbed by the ferocity and the damage caused by the fire around shinaria and beyond

they make the fire in Plakias/Selia area a couple of years ago into perspective

After all the fires this year there will be not much green left now in the area... Very sad! Has the fire made it into the hotel? I remember there was a lot of straw and hay inside.

yes the fire got right into the old hotel and wrecked it even more, but it didn't get much further inland than that, i don't know how those palm trees survived

a lot worse around the next bay, all the land around Drimiskos was burnt out

I was there in October and wondered if it had been one of those "convenient" fires that happen when people want to develop but don't have the right permissions ... there were two guys burning what looked like perfectly good olive trees in the field next to the hotel, towards the beach. The trees were young-ish but well-grown. They had all been cut down and didn't look burnt at all. Some goats were trying to eat the leaves before branches went on the bonfire. Seemed a waste of good wood/leaves/olives.
