During our stay we like to hire a car for a few days to see the area. Is there a car hire firm in Plakias, and where are the must see places around Plakias?.

There are several hire outlets in Plakias. Our own Ali is (hopefully still) working for Alianthos and, I am sure , able to do you a deal.

Regarding "must sees", I will leave that to other members who visit regularly, who are much better informed than myself.

According to the second part of your question, it depends on your interests. For instance, you can drive to Frangokastello
and you will see the wonderful coast line. Further I would recommend a trip to Spili, to Agia Galini or Matala.

If you like walking, then, although there's plenty you can do without taking the car, it's worth driving west to the base of the Imbros gorge, walking up, then getting a taxi down (20 Euro) - or, you can do it the other way round.  A bit further afield, there's the Amari valley which is quite picturesque.

Another nice tour is to drive through Kotsifou Gorge to the Lappa area with its ancient village Argiroupolis. Take a walk inside the village, talk with the "tourist man" in the small shop in the vault of the old city gate. He will be happy to show you several interesting places just nearby to visit.
Just downside the village there is a lot of natural water springs. A lot of remainings of old watermills and canals as well, and just among the running water there are several tavernas. Sounds very touristic, and of course it is, but in a hot summer day it is really cooling to sit down for a short rest and perhaps an Amstel.

It is about an hours drive from Plakias and you can choose another way back to Kotsifou or, a bit longer though, go over the mountains to the road to Chora Sfakia.

There are many spectacular drives within reach of Plakias. Re Imbros I would advocate walking up, lunch at taverna at top then walking down again. The drive along the coast to bottom of Imbros gorge / Sfakia is spectacular - easy and one of the best drives. Returning to Plakias in the late afternoon sunlight is wonderful. Also drive beyond Sfakia up the newly refurbished  pass towards Anopoli. This used to be a white knuckle drive but is now a big wide road - remade over the last 2 /3 years. Now an easy drive but with incredible views from considerable height above Sfakia. The white knuckle drive is the Killikratis pass starting from Kapsodasos - again accessed from the route to Sfakia. That is for the very brave !!! Driving up the Imbros pass road should be interesting this year if the roadworks are finished. Many road tunnels for a completely reconstructed route were in an advanced stage of construction last year.

Drive to Spili and then turn left just as you get into Spili and drive to the Amari valley. There is a relatively new road from the Amari valley (not very far from  the point where you go in the valley from Spilli) which takes you to the famous Arkadi Monestry. A short drive from Plakias - drive to Preveli monestry.

The list is nearly infinite. However do plenty of walking. We have our car for the duration of our stay but on many days do not use it.

Hi there,

All the above suggestions are fantastic, One trip we love to do is Loutro, a place until recently could only be reached by boat or by foot. You take the road to Chora Sfakia taking in the stunning coastline, in Chora Sfakia you take the ferry to (about 20 minutes) Loutro. The aproach on the boat is lovely a tiny cove with blue & white houses. It is a lovely sleepy place to spend a day with fantastic tarvernas, The Blue House is our favourite with a large choice of freshly made dishes every day.

Evidently, you can get discount if you mention your a member of this forum!!
I'll have a look around to see if I can find it!
I've used them for the last 3 years and they are excellant and the cheapest I could find and boy did I look! But also try Monza. they only quoted me a small increse for the same deal.
