Walks in the Plakias Area

For those who like walking, I saw information on two books that might be of interest. I can't vouch for the info on local availability though.

Those walking books were available in Plakias last time we looked - we've got them - and used them. They were considerably cheaper in Plakias than on that website.

I've also seen those books in the shops in Plakias. Can't remeber whether I've ever bought one - probably not, since I don't still have one. But they were written by Lance Chilton who was leading SunMed Botany walks the first time that I went to Plakias in 1990. The sketch maps are taken from his map of the area that I had on 2 sides of an A4 sheet. I can't remember how I acquired this, but presumbaly you could buy it somewhere - perhaps SunMed were selling it.

Lance was kind enough to send me a copy a few years back.

They are usually available in the Plakias Supermarket - the one I refer to as the middle one, about half way between the Alianthos hotel and the bridge.  Good value too

Good to know we can definitely get a copy locally. If past experiences are anything to go by, we (well me anyway) will still manage to get lost. Only 1 month to go.

But getting lost is half the fun!  That's when the real discoveries are made!

Thought I would mention that rather than get the Plakias Walker's Map, in Plakias Market, there is cheaper (2.5Euro) and, to my mind, better 'Damnoni Area' map available in the Forum supermarket.

a little bit of info for 2007, there has been a landslide on the walking route up to Sellia, it covers the whole track but it is possible to get around it by going below it

Lance has now combined the two books into one, Walks in Plakias Southern Crete, which the Village Store sells for 7.50 I think.

It doesn't include the map but Hapimag's "Damnoni Area" map available in most shops locally looks suspiciously similar to his original map, right down to the colour scheme and lettering, despite claiming copyright under a couple of Greek names.

Seems Lance's last visit was in autumn 2007 but he doesn't mention the landslide at Sellia as far as I can see.  Perhaps it's all been cleared in the meantime?

Back from Plakias and inside the machine again...  :'(  Had a really fine time there. Trips to Loutro, Lentas, Melidóni and some more... and finally we made it up to Timeos Stavros with the kids. Some pics soon ...
