Plakias / Reporting In
« on: September 25, 2007, 11:01:44 AM »
Hi
We also would be interested to hear about Spinalonga as I read the book whilst in Plakias and wanted to visit but the rep said they were not doing tours to the island as it was too far.  How did you get there - did you drive across to Agio Nikolais and get the ferry.  We thought we might go next year and do a week in the north to see Spinalonga.  Hope you are enjoying the book Dawn - I thought it was great.

Here is the picture of the new car wash which is on the road out of town on the righthandside opposite Santa Maria.  It looks very impressive

Plakias / Reporting In
« on: September 21, 2007, 12:05:24 PM »
We spent 2 fantastic weeks 28 Aug - 11 Sept in Plakias.  This was our first visit not only to Plakias but to Crete and we really enjoyed it.  We stayed at Santa Maria Apartments which is just up the hill about a 5-10 minute walk into town.  The apartment was lovely we had the top floor so we had views all across Plakias.  The apartment was cleaned every day except Sunday with clean towels and linen every other day.  It was very quiet and really relaxing. The Olpympic rep was also staying there on the ground floor which we found really great as she was very informative about the island and really knew her stuff. We enjoyed the food in all the restaurants and our favourite was Herakas (think that is how it is spelt) especially the sole dish - lovely.  We only had one bad meal and that was in Mouses. We spent quite a few nights in Ostraco's and really enjoyed it especially upstairs when the dancing got going and the staff were very friendly. We hired a car for three days and got a good rate from Moto Auto on the main street 90euros for the 3 days.  We went to Spili which was recommended by Pete and Dawn and it was great.  We went to Hora Sfakia which was where we were originally going to stay - glad we didnt it really is picturesque but not much to do there and no real beach to speak of. We went to Matala and Franko something or other which was nice and Agio Galini but we preferred Plakias to all of them. We tried all the beaches but prefered the far end. We went to Preveli and enjoyed hiring a pedalo for one hour which took us down a small river where you can get off and have a walk around. Whilst in Plakias we met Pete and Dawn and Tracey their daughter and George who were all great and made our holiday more interesting.  We will definitely be back!!!!!!!!!!!!

We have just come back from a fantastic two weeks in Plakias it was our first visit and thoroughly enjoyed it.  We stayed at Santa Maria Apartments and couldnt fault them at all - cleaned every other day beautiful room with fantastic views. In response to the question the building opposite is a car wash and is now fully operative.  I have taken a photo which I will put on but havent downloaded it yet.  I will also write a more detailed report on Plakias. Hello to George, Dawn, Pete and Tracey who made us very welcome it was really nice to meet you guys and hope you had a safe journey home. Promise to write more later.

Hi, Ann & Steve
Apologies for the delay in reporting back, computer problems at home and work.
We are pleased you enjoyed your stay in Plakias. It was great meeting you. We look forward to reading any articles you write.

The 'Santa Maria' is just rooms and apartments and a 'lawn', and is about 5 mins outside the town.
The nearest supermarket is next to the church just down the road, and you can buy a key for the safe which you will probably find in your wardrobe.
Nearest bar is 'Antonis' on the beach road, turn left after the church at the crossroad.

Have a good one, I'm off tonight, 10 hours to go

have a great time George will pop in and see you when we arrive and thanks for your info Anne]

Hi We are going to the Santa Maria Apartments on the 28 August for 2 weeks so will let you know what the building is.  This is also our first time to Plakias can you please give me some info on the Santa Maria.  We are staying in one of the apartments not the studios do you know if these are at the front of the building as I have been told the back of the building overlooks a concrete wall.  Any info you can give would be much appreciated. Also what facilities does the santa maria have as olympic hols only had the basic info.  Is there a bar/restaurant/cash machine but most of all did you like them and were they clean and quiet.  Thanks Anne & Steve
Most of your queries were answered under your First Time in Plakias thread.

Cash machines are located on the main road through the village, fronting the beach. See the Plakias Map - click the button at the top right above.

When I asked about restaurant/bar/cash machine I meant were any of these facilities in the apartments as Olympic had no info on the Apartements.  I meant to ask safety deposit box not cash machine. I have seen all the restaurants bars etc on the map.  Thanks a lot

Have just come back from visit to Plakias and have thoroughly loved my first visit - but boy was it hot!!! Any way, my question relates to the intreguing building that was slowly developing opposite where we stayed - the Santa Maria appartments. The building had a drive in area - like a garage-but was tiled from floor to half way up walls, had low level strip lights on the walls, then has a small office type area attached. While sitting on our balcony in the evenings, we saw this building have a concrete forcourt made and a rolling garage doot fitted. We were sorry that we couldnt stay longer to find out what is was going to be. I'm sure it hasnt developed much since we left on 14th Aug, but please........someone tell me what its purpose is!!!

If hiring the car for the whole two weeks and picking up from the airport, the cheapest quote I got was from Just Rent a Car www.justrentals.gr. If you want a car from and to the airport but not for the whole time, Anso travel will quote you for 3 days + 3 days, picking up from the airport when you arrive returning it to their Plakias office after 3 days, then the reverse at the end of your holiday. If you are hiring in resort for a few days, it's probably best to get quotes after you arrive - we've not had any problems with Anso, Moto Plakias or Alianthos and have just used whichever one gives the best deal at the time.

Happy hols

Hiya,

Welcome to the forum!

There has been some discussion about Santa Maria, you can use the search top right or click on this link.
Yes it looks like front vs back is good to know, maybe somone else will know where the apartments are located.

It is a little way out of town, you can see where it is on this map.
But its less than a 10 minute walk to the centre.

Cheers,

Paul

I'm picking mine up at the airport this year and like you, used 'JUST'. I've got a Jimny for three weeks (22 Days) for 700 euros all in.
george g...

Our Toyota Aygo (cheapest car) was 319 Euro for 2 weeks. Zorbas quoted be a similar price but I wasn't totally happy with the insurance. Others were closer to 350 Euro.

Hi thanks will probably go there when we get to Plakias - any other useful info on anything to do with Plakias would be great Thanks a lot
Hi Sunshinegirl

Just carry on reading the message board, hit the titles on the left ie 'Plakias', 'Where to go' etc they will open up and give you all the info you want to know.

Hope you enjoy your first trip. I get the impression your with Olympic as your staying at the Santa Maria, so you'll be arriving at Heraklion. I'll be at Chania on the 28th, picking up Pete and Dawn and daughter, but we'll be back in town in the evening, probably enjoying an odd G&T or three in the Levicon, come and say hello!

I'll be the one with the suntan as I will have already been there a week.
