Probably hungry and following the squid.....think it was only a baby and of very little threat to humans. Hoping no-one caught it...the Med is its home too !

A 5ft blue shark was swimming around the bay and the old harbour yesterday some great pics and videos on facebook the life guard was shouting to everybody to get out of the water its was following a guy on a lilo. Very unusual for this size and type to be so close locals said its the first some of them have ever seen.

The restaurants on the front road have really good protection from the wind, especially after the fire that hit them a few years ago.

We like both places. Paleochora is bigger, but we found fewer good restaurants. The beaches are good, and the stoney one is quieter. On the music side, one Sunday we were there in 2016 some genuine kritiki musicians fired up in the square down by the harbour and were truly tremendous. We also saw Kostas (?) Abyssinios playing there in a cafe a few years back.  The people are nice and friendly, and it is more of a year-round place than Plakias; it can also be windy, but nothing like as persistently as Plakias. The main street shuts to traffic in the evening, and it is great place to stroll in a good atmosphere. Lots of the late season visitors are Scandwegians, and so far there have been no boorish Russians invading the place.

For the alternative beaches, they are not far away, If you like walking it can be done by foot, or rent a car for a few days, make a daytrip to Agia Galini or to Rethymnon if You like some more shopping. Anso travel in Plakias rents bike if You like that more thans a car.
Have fun there and enjoy your 18 days. We were in Plakias in april With Easter and had almost no wind on the beach.

Thanks a lot for the quick and honest answers.
We are in Plakias for 18 days, so hopefully there will be some days with not so strong wind.
I`m sure there are some boats to rent or little ferries to discover other beaches.
Thank you very much.
I am sure we will enjoy our holidays.

If you read a few more previous posts you will see there is alternative beaches to the main plakias beach within easy walking distance. Just work out the wind direction and head to either souda to the west or Amanda or damoni to the east. Or alternatively get tucked into the back of roc ka beach

Yes. Regrettably the wind can be so strong that you cannot use the beach. It doesnít happen all the time and is unpredictable. However, you will enjoy all the other days very much and will forget those few days of very strong wind if you are unlucky and get them. I hope you have a fabulous time in Plakias. Thatís why so many people keep returning there every year.
