Plakias / Re: October ?
« on: September 07, 2020, 04:38:07 PM »
We were due to fly out to Plakias tomorrow morning but had already cancelled the holiday.
Glad we did.

Just seen the Government has put 7 extra Greek islands onto the quarantine list and yes, Crete is amongst then.
As from Wednesday 4 am people returning will need to self isolate for 14 days.

I am sorry to throw cold water on holidays in Plakias this year, but:

With the latest reaction from our government to the situation in Spain, how can anyone be sure that a holiday abroad, wherever it may be,will not result in having to isolate for 2 weeks on return to the UK ?
We simply do not know and can not know the future virus situation in any of our holiday destinations .

There is no way that we will even consider boarding an aircraft until at least mid 2021.

And even then, conditions will have to drastically improved before we do so.
And then some form of vaccine or medical developments will have to be available.

Do we really think that this pandemic is  under control and is going away ?
We do not.

I am 74 old and am very, very wary of this corana virus.
Call me a scared old fool, but I want to live to be an even older old fool.
And that old fool wants to be sat in the sun on the balcony of Creta Mare, sipping Metaxa, eating olives and feta and gazing out over the Libyan Sea.

People on the beach ?

Trip boats out in the harbour ?

Things getting back to some form of normality ?

Contacted Jet2 today to re book our this years September flight.
Now re booked for 9th June 2021

Problem free booking.

BUT:
The prices are eye watering.
Expect to pay much more for flights with Jet 2 to Crete next year.
With add ons and charges for changing, we have paid an extra 50 pc on top of the price which we agreed that we would have paid this year.
Flights for two to Iraklion are becoming a luxury item !!

But if we want to go back to Plakias (twice) next year, then we have little alternative but to pay up.

Just hope that the rest of the holiday hasn't also gone up by 50 pc

Decision for this year now taken.

We are not brave enough to risk a 4 hour plus flight to Plakias in the current uncertain conditions.
Looking now to re schedule our Jet 2 flights back to either June or September next year.

It is with great regret that we do this but for people in our age group caution on health issues must be our top priority
Taking  unnecessary risks whilst this virus pandemic is far from over seems to us unnecessary and unwise.

Still no sign of sun beds or trip boats showing on the webcam.
Are visitors starting to come back to Plakias yet ?
How much of the town is now re opened ?

Weather looks brilliant especially when typing this sat in a cold very wet North Yorkshire

Looking at the web can there does not seem to be a lot of activity on the beach.
Any sun beds out yet ?
And are there many visitors in town ?
And what nationalitys are currently there ?

Still hurting from missing two visits this year.

Today should have been our first day this year in Plakias, staying with George at Creta Mere.

Just hope that 12 months will let us go back to see them again.

But looking (longingly) at that webcam, it seems that there is a lot more activity in the town recently ?
Mostly cars and vans etc but more and more people are beginning to show up.
Hope they keep going this year.
It looks more and more likely that we will have to write off this years holidays in Plakias.
And hope to re visit again in late May 2021.

Plakias / October ?

June holiday gone.

Looks like September holiday is also gone.

Let's hope that we are clear to travel byOctober, we can gat flights and that all our usual places are still up and running.

Don't know how late places stay open or when airlines stop flights but if we can go this year, then we make every effort to do so.

We need Plakias and they more than ever will need us.

Many thanks for that update. Most welcome and informative.
Could you please elaborate/explain in simple terms, about the proposed pedestrian area being planned.
In particular, where the bi pass road would be routed and where it would start and end.
Would any new parts of this road need to be a new build ?
What would be the extent of the pedestrian area ?
In my view, if this were to come about, it would be a major plus point for Plakias and its visitors.

Plakias / September holiday report
« on: September 28, 2019, 12:14:40 PM »
We flew from Leeds Bradford airport on 3rd September for 11 days with Ryanair.
No problems at all.
Flights on time and no pilot strikes.
Picked up a car at Chania Airport and took a leisurely drive down to Plakias, with just a short stop at the bottom of the hill, going in to Chania , to stock up at the big supermarket.
Drive took about 1 hour 40 mins.

As is usual, we stayed with George at Creta Mare.
As is usual, the stay was excellent.
Well looked after by Joanna and Anna.

We had an excellent holiday, as usual, and the following are our observations:

The mix of people/nationalities in town this year was varied.
There were, amongst others, Swiss, Italians (a lot) Austrians, French (a lot) Germans and Israelis but very few British.

The number of British visitor did start to increase towards the end of our stay.
This mix, with no predominant nation in town , gave a really good "feel" to the evenings.
Tavernas were busy but not overly so.
Very few required reservations to ensure a table but all were well used.
The exception we found was Gio Mar.
We always needed to pre book a table at this one when we (regularly) used it.

Eating our was always good.
You have to be very unlucky to have a bad evening meal experience in Plakias.
Taverna prices unchanged from June.

Amongst eating out at several other places,we went back to Sirocco for the first time in many years.
The fact that it has changed hands a few times since we first knew it had put us off using it.
But really impressed this time and we will now start to use it again on our next visits.

The weather was strange for September.
Very hot and sunny for nearly all the 11 days there (rain on our last evening).
BUT:
I know the place is windy, and renowned for that, but this was exceptional.
We only could use the sandy part of the beach, opposite Plakias Suites, 5 times and even some of that was marginal.
For the rest of the time, we used the beds from Creta Mare, on the gravel/pebbly beach.
Some days we just stayed on the balcony and watched the sandstorms blowing.
Sand was blowing down the beaches and sunbeds were sent flying all over the place.
Never seen it like that for such a long period before.

As to the town itself, then very little seems to have changed since our last visit in June.
No discernible building work or changes to be seen, which is good.

But the far end is a different proposition.
It looks like they (Greek money, according to Siffi ) are building a small village up there.
Could also be some commercial build. …...shops, café, Tavernas ?
At the rate they are going, they could well be finished some time next year.
The amount of work done since we saw it in June astonished us.
And you can hear some building work going on when on the beach.
(not enough to make us change sunbed location, though)

A really big change to the old town.
 BUT:
It is far enough from the main town so as not to affect the feel of the place.
And it may not make too big an impact on the beaches opposite, or we hope not.
And there is more than enough beach to go round.
Progress will happen and if it happens in Plakias, then this is the area for it to be.
Nothing stays the same for ever, however much we want it to.

We will still continue to re visit the old place twice a year, early June and early September, even though it is beginning to evolve into some thing slightly different to what we first knew.

Change for the better or the worse ?
I leave that up to the Greek residents.
Its their town !!

Now looks like a full gale.
Sun beds blowing down the beach on the beach opposite Creta Mare.
Never seen the sea a rough as this in all the times we have been here.

No further reports on any building work.
Last day of this holiday.
It is blowing half a gale in Plakias.
All unbrellas are down and beaches deserted.
Dust storms blowing down the beaches.
Forecast of rain later so looks like a day sat on the balcony gazing out at Gavdos.

Will report on this holiday over the weekend, once we are back home.

Visited the new beach bar towards the far end and seems to be up and running ok
Owned and run by Plakias Suites concern and does drinks, snacks, salads etc.
The sun beds run by this  concern have had an "upgrade"
As well as the two beds and a brolly you can now have a covered, fringed super doopeta set up.
At only 20 euros it seems quite reasonable ???

Of more interest is the major building work now well underway from Paligrenos down to Ammos building.
We were amazed at the build rate on this and the extent of that build.
It goes as far back as possible til it reached the escarpment edge and is 3 or 4 times bigger than the previously built blocks.
There is also some building work going on behind Paligrenos but did not get a good look at this.
Will update when we get back in 10 days time on how this September break has gone.
