Hello chris,
well, ehh, let's see... I would say Agios Pavlos... though it was a little bit more crowded when we were there the last time...

Right? Looking foreward for the next...

Yes, this is the view from the other direction...

It doesn't help much to identify the place so I'll tell you...

Aghia Fotini.

I wonder when they realised they'd built it too close to the sea?

 it was wild that day!!!

Aghia Fotini is down the coast a little from Preveli before you get to Ligres beach.

we found a short cut over a bulldozed road (ok for 4x4s but i wouldn't do it in anything else) go to the tavena near the lower monastery at Preveli ( next to the venetian bridge) drive over the river and turn right

right here's another, a bit different to say the least

every village has it's war memorial, much like here in the UK but what about this one

I hope someone gets this one soon, I have the same picture. But can't remember where it was.
There is a small room behind this memorial with skulls and bones in and sorry Chris the picture doesn't do the monument justice.
Only clue is I was in and around Amari, and lost.

We've been to the Amari valley a few times but I don't remember seeing this memorial.

Chris, is that a reference to a G.I. killed in Vietnam near the bottom of the visible face and, if so, why?

It was wild in Aghia Fotini certainly but it wasn't cold!
The humidity that day on that part of the coast had to be close to 100%.
I don't remember anywhere more humid, even in the tropics.

We used the same road on the same day but I don't think it qualified as a short-cut given the extremely slow pace we had to use in our non-4x4 hire car.
It didn't take much longer to get back to Plakias via the good roads and through Spili.
To be precise it was 45 km. and 75 minutes from Ligres to Plakias.

George was right, it is the Amari Valley, it's the war memorial at Ano Meres, it really is the most impressive Greek memorial i have seen

The height of the statue must be 12-15 foot and that sits on plinths over 6 foot tall

the names on the front of the monument are of those who died when the village was destroyed by the germans in 1944 (IIRC)

as for the name on the side, I can only imagine that a villager was fighting for the american army in vietnam  in 1968, perhaps he'd emigrated and his family still wanted his name on the memorial

lovely place btw, very friendly people but not a lot of english spoken

Thanks Chris, I might be able to get some sleep now I know where I've been.
Agree, that it's impressive and it covers a large fenced off area. I thought the front gate was a bit iffy though.

I've got a few more oddities that I've taken pics of while I was in the area, perhaps I'll sort them and see if anyone knows where they are.

Where is this?
Should be reasonably easy given the visual clues.
