Introduction.
« on: December 25, 2012, 09:53:48 PM »
We would like to introduce our selves to the members of the Plakias forum. We are a couple living in the south of the Netherlands and we are traveling with two young children. Our son from 3 years old and our daughter from 2 years old. Last year we have spent on of our holidays on Rhodos. We stayed there the first two weeks of May in the place called Pefkos. A small town far away from the tourists towns like Rhodos city. We and our kids had a great time and were 100% sure we would go back this year. But.... Ryanair cancelled all flights from the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany to Rhodos. That's why we looked for other options and decided to go back to Crete (we have been there as an couple 5 years ago). We booked our flights today. Flying with Ryanair from Brussel/Charleroi on June 2th and flying back on June 16th. Price and flight times (important with small children) are great. We are looking forwward to our holiday and hope to find a lot of information about the place we would like to stay: Plakias. We will post some questions in the other topics.

Welcome to the Forum.

Although Plakias is a town which relies on tourism, it is not really a tourist resort and is very Greek, so child friendly, and has a very long beach with plenty of room for children to play without imposing on other people.

I hope you enjoy your holiday.

And of course as many of the tavernas open out directly onto the beach a formal play area is not necessary. You can sit, eat & drink and watch the children play all day long within a few feet of you.

Thanks for the information so far. It's no problem when a city relies on tourism it's just the way they approuch the tourist. We hate employees of restaurants that are pushing you to eat in their restaurant. We think Plakias is the right place for use to stay when we read: sit, eat & drink and watch the children play :-)

We have been going to Plakias for around ten years and have NEVER been "pushed" to enter a taverna. Have a look into the establishment, if it seems appealing, give it a try; in my experience you will generally be pleased with the result, provided you are not looking for "Pseudo" ethnic food. Everything is Greek based and none the worse for that.

Totally agree with Mike, I have never felt pushed in Plakias in well over ten years' holidays there. This is in contrast with more 'touristy' locations.

That said, many of the Taverna owners recognise our faces now and give us a warm welcome, which is really nice, but they make no more fuss than that. Each year I spend the Winter looknig forward to two weeks of good Greek cuisine....

Hope you enjoy Plakias, we are here at present:)

Hi, Hope you really enjoy your holiday. We took a rep to task a few years ago as they were suggesting that the tavern owners were bribing people to eat...it was absolute rubbish. I have been a regular to Plakias since 1987 and not one person has 'bribed' me to eat at their tavern.....although lots have invited me to share a drink out of sheer friendship and good hospitality. I'd go back tomorrow.....and will be doing so in September ! Have a great time.
