Cycling around Plakias
« on: August 05, 2007, 12:43:59 PM »
Hi,
Just wondered if there were any nice cycling trips to do around the area, preferably not too hilly as the knees aren't what they used to be. Preferably about 20 to 25 mile round trip.

Also best place to hire bikes from.

Cheers

You'll be lucky Dean!
There are hills everywhere, but fortunately not 'that' bad, depends what you mean by 'hills'.
Your best bet is to go in the direction of the gorge and beyond, it's not that bad in that direction. bol.

I think there's a bike shop opposite Dave and Ali's Village Store.

The bike shop has gone by Dave & Alli's shop, but Easy Ride do good mountain bikes, I always cycle but tend to stay local up to Mirthios, Lefkogia, Souda etc but George is right heading for the gorge is best bet but it will be pretty tough.

I can also recommend EasyRide ( www.easyride.reth.gr ) we have hired bikes from them on our last 5 visits. They hire both MTB and Hybred bikes and i would recommened a MTB for the area around Plakias, especially if you hire one with a remote front suspention lockout.

Whilst most routes involved some climbing following the irrigation canals is a very relaxing ride after the initial climb out of plakias

The climb up the gorge is quite well graded after leaving Mirthos, but usually has a headwind although in a strange way this is good as it helps keep you cool. A good route is to climb the kotsifos george then it is  downhill to Angouseliana where you can either contine to the main rethymon road turning right and right again to Koxare or cut across county on the back roads dirct to there. Fom Koxare it is largly downhill to Plakias through the Kouftaliotis george with just a sharp climb into Asomatos.

I suggest you get a copy of Lance Chiltons walkers map (avoiding if you can the blatent copy sold under the Hapimag name)

Finally i would recommend avoiding the direct route to Selia from behind Ostraco and instead using the road that leaves the coast by the new harbour, as it is very steep as is the concrete road direct to Merithos

Hi Fenman

Welcome to the forum

It's good to see a specialist on the site to answer the questions that a lot of us would be lost with

You obviously know your cycling.

Agreed George.
BTW Dean - when you see how steep the road up to Selia is, you will understand that it would need a very special bike to get up it!

Preferably one with an engine.

I walked up that road last year, that was bad enough
