Taxi / Car Hire from Heraklion Airport
« on: July 31, 2007, 06:47:43 AM »
We are looking at booking independently for this September but the First Choice flight from Stansted arrives at 03.10am and the return flight leaves at 04.10am. (BTW I know the XL flights are at a more reasonable time). Has anyone had experience of arriving and leaving in the early hours of the morning? Specifically:
a Are there taxis available from the airport at that time?
b Are they much more expensive after midnight?
c Can you hire a car at 3am?

Thanks in anticipation -

The answer is yes there are taxis (at ALL hours) and most hire car people will also meet you at ALL hours. I am not sure about any increase in taxi price after midnight (others may comment here) but I think perhaps not.

You will need to prebook a hire car in advance - you won't pick one up at the airport unbooked at that hour.

Basically they are all after the business from those (many) very late (early ?) flights

Hi G & K

a. I would have thought that the taxis are available at anytime considering the times that the flights come in, give Zac a call:

http://www.taxi4you.gr/overall.asp?lang=uk

c. Give 'JUST car rental' a try, their doing some good deals at the moment:

http://www.justrentals.gr/

b. I would think that the prices for taxis are fixed for anytime, day or night.

Thanks for both replies - no chance of being stranded at the airport then. Just need to find somewhere to stay. Anyone know if some places give a discount for last minute bookings?

Plakias in September now tends to be  fairly full up though I don't think you will have too many problems last minute. Don't know about discounts etc. - might just be a case of shopping around. Last year in September there were still some vacancies at Stella pension- where we always stay and obviously recommend.

Hi G&K

Your best bet is to start emailing all the local apartments and keep your fingers crossed. Don't forget to ask for their 'best price'.

Good news is - Stella (Markos) has a room free although it wasn't clear whether it had cooking facilities. Plakias Bay Hotel would be ideal but at 60Euro/night it's out of our price bracket. Paligremnos don't seem very good at replying to emails so I'll probably give them a phone. If all else fails, Kosmar still have some holidays left.

Nearly all the Stella rooms DO have cooking facilities. He does have a couple at the back which he has not upgraded yet but he doesn't normally hire those out (yet) At Stella you can get Bed and breakfast (no Breakfast is optional resulting in slightly cheaper room price) AND very new very nice cooking facilities. Air Conditioning and safe also included at no extra.

Have a look at http://www.flute.toucansurf.com/Plakias/P9271708.JPG

I would ask Marcos to clarify that the room he offers does have self catering facilities. Last year those were all brand new and very smart indeed.

I have asked for clarification but from what you've said, I suspect this is an old room - he did say it was at the back.

If at the back then almost certainly not self catering - unless he was busy again last winter. He must be fairly full.

We often arrive at stupid hours the last 2 years due to delays. It's no problem to get a Taxi but I would suggest you pre book one from Plakias the guy we use is Eftihios his number is 00306973038202  he will charge 75 euro's probably 85 at those times.

Car hire not a problem either but pre book it from the UK, Contact the Alianthos in Plakias they can provide a hire car & driver to take you down to plakias which means there is no worrying about the drive late at night.

Hope thats useful

Thanks - Re Taxi - we had a reply from Zach (www.taxi4you.gr) - price was 80 Euro in the middle of the night. If we come, it's more likely we will hire a car for the whole 2 weeks, pre-booked on the internet. Anso Travel will arrange a car at the airport+3 day hire, then 3 days a the end, leaving the car at the airport but it's probably in the middle of the holiday we will feel most inclined to drive out.
