Travel to Plakias
« on: March 20, 2006, 08:45:48 PM »
My wife and I intend to stay in Plakias in September. We hope to have stayed on Gavdos Island before we come to Plakias.
The ferry returning from Gavdos gets to Chora Sfakia about 18.30. Will there be a local taxi either in Sfakia or Plakias that we could arrange before to pick us and take us to Plakias?  Is this something that the Apartment in Plakias we will stay in, could arrange?
I would be interested to hear of any other suggestion to get between the two towns.

Taxi is definitely the only way between Sfakia and Plakias at that time of day and I suspect now at any time of day as I believe there is no longer a service bus between the towns (??)

I am sure that the owner of the apartment where you are staying could arrange for a taxi from Plakias to meet you and bring you back. Many hotel / apartment owners make this sort of arrangement for their customers for Taxis to/from the airports. Other people on this forum may be able to suggest a direct contact with a taxi driver. When are you coming - where are you staying. We are there in late September at Stella Pension.

Ewan- I do not want to discourage you from going to Gavdos, but I just had a discussion last Friday with Zacharia- a local cab driver -on this subject and he told me that at that time of the season it can be very risky to go there. By that he means it is perfectly sunny and he sea is calm in the morning and then it turns ugly in the afternoon with very rough sea. He mentioned some tourists last year could not get off the island for 6 days. Take this information for what it is and good luck.

Ewan- one more thing- in terms of arranging for cabs and other services I would suggest you contact Hari- at Motoplakias- they rent cars, bikes, but also arrange for taxis, tours to other islands , hotels,etc- a great resource. E-mail- maplakia@otenet.gr. phone no. 30283031632

John and Santa -many thanks for your helpful comments.
Thats an interesting comment about Gavdos and the weather. We plan to go to the island on a Sunday and return on Thursday. The beauty of returning on Thursday is that (based on 2005 schedules) there are also ferries back to Sfakia on Fri, Sat and Sun. So unless its a really epic storm I hope my 'bases are covered'.
Thereafter, arranging a taxi is my preferred option as I enjoy not having to drive for a few weeks. I was impressed with the Crete bus service last year.

Nice to see that someone else doesn't mind using the bus.
