Chania airport to Plakias
« on: July 28, 2014, 05:56:09 AM »
We are arriving on 6th Sept. till 20th and decided to hire a car from Chania airport and back.
Is it an easy drive from the airport to south of Rethymnon ? as we are familiar with the road from there.
Many thank's
Dave and Jackie

Done it from heraklion to plakias and it was a straight forward pleasant drive. Think Chania takes same road but from opposite direction. Then from rethymon its same road and easy to follow.

There's one odd left junction but it's an easy drive :-)

Its an easy drive, you don,t have to go near Hania, just follow the road from the airport down to Souda, then pick up the main coastal highway east to Rethymnon, take the Spili turn-off, before Rethymnon turn off....easy, no probs

Thankyou for the replies so far, we will have a road map but sometimes the odd landmark etc can help with navigation.

As others have said, it is a pretty straightforward drive....the only slightly messy bit is getting to the highway at Souda - there are a couple of alternatives at that point.

The choice can be seen in the link below - either down the smaller side road (to the right) which makes (I am guessing) the 'odd left junction' mentioned by Bwian an easier right turn, or continue on the main road down to the traffic lights which will lead you to the odd junction (It's not so bad though)

You can use the street view to have a virtual drive around the area before you go and identify your own landmarks.

Depends on the time you arrive, but have you considered leaving the highway at Vrisses and driving over the mountains and Askifou plateau, then down towards Chora Sfakion and on to Plakias from there? Its a great trip, far better than the main route IMO - though it does take longer.

Yes, thought of that we know the road from Hora Sfakion to Plakias.
Might go that way as we arrive at 1300 and have a swim en-route near the Vritomatis Hotel

Shortly after leaving the airport is the  Souda Bay war cemetry. A very moving place and worthwhile stopping. Look it up on tripadvisor (yes bizarre that its on there)

Hi By chance I was reading Crete Today on line and there was an article about the taxi drivers at Chania Airport objecting to a newly introduced bus service from Chania Airport to Rethymnon town......reading further, and as long as the drivers don't get their own way, the service was introduced on 30th June and costs e6.80 for a single. Helpful to know as the links between Rethymnon and Plakias are now very reliable.

Hope the new bus service from the airport to Rethmynon is true Jackie as we will use it next time.
Will make enquiries when we get there on the 6th Sept.

Would be good to know if it is still operating..just because it was introduced doesn't mean it is still functional....and I can imagine the taxi drivers having quite a say about things !
