Plakias / Off season.
« on: July 28, 2013, 03:28:30 PM »
Anyone visited off season? It's worth the effort, as Plakias is totally different when the season ends. We had a great time, and I'd love to do it again. However, we had to fly Heathrow-> Athens -> Crete. This was not as bad - or expensive- as it sounds, but takes a great deal more time.

I'd be interested to hear from anyone who's visited in the quiet times!

But the main reason for this post is that a group of Crete ex-pats are currently trying to get direct flights to Crete from the UK all year round, which would be a great benefit to them, and to us when we decided to go for a winter break. Please take the time to add your name to the petition here:

Where to eat...or not! / Re: Kastro
« on: July 25, 2013, 05:10:50 PM »
We're off to Plakias in September for 2 weeks - and will certainly be visiting Kastro more than once. The menu is not extensive, but it's all good. Their local red wine is excellent, and the welcome second to none. I even enjoy the walk (especially coming back, as it's all down hill)

That illustrates a common problem Richard. There are several places that have become favourites, for any number of reasons. 3 or 4 visits to Lysseos are a must, and the same goes for the wonderful taverna in Sellia. Then there's a couple of trips to Kastro, probably just 1 visit to KriKri for a pizza and a night out in Reythimno. So there's not a lot of nights left on a 2 week holiday to take the gamble of trying something new. Having said that, I've got a few on the 'must try' list from other recent Forum postings.

Lysseos will certainly be near the top of our list in September. We usually go 3 or 4 times in a fortnight.

I think a get together would be a great idea - but not being much of a drinker, I'm not sure of a good watering hole in Plymouth to suggest. Somewhere with plenty of space so we can grab a corner to ourselves would be good. Union Rooms?
As for topics - well I'm sure we won't run out.

Any more Janners out there?  Perhaps we should meet up?

It's always sad to hear of fires in Plakias - and with the growth of the internet we now get the bad news very quickly. Having been a regular visitor for years, I can only say that the area will recover - as many other parts of the region have in the past. Best news is that it would appear there were no serious injuries.

And Jackie - I didn't know you were in Plymouth - I was until January this year, when I moved back to Cornwall, land of my birth. However, I'm now in Torpoint, so not far away.

It would appear that things are under control now (Picture pinched from the Plakias facebook group)

Slightly edited posts from Ali in Plakias:
Big fire up over the Calypso headland. Unfortunately really strong wind so whilst they are fighting hard to control it, it's proving difficult.
They appear to have water, the irrigation water must be OK. We could see one fireman doing a great job fighting the fire. Barb, we are talking about the headland, up above Plakias Bay Hotel!

I haven't tried Souda for several years - might give it a go this year if weather conditions are not ideal.

Hey Barny,
Will we ever get to share that Mythos?
Got your dates for 2014 fixed yet?
John

I'm afraid that I don't recall seeing lobster spaghetti on any Plakias menu. As a poor (pun intended) substitute I can recommend the seafood pasta at Kri-Kri.
I can only suggest that you ask around when you get to the resort (I'm sure Nikos at Ostraco would have some ideas)

Plakias / Re: a sandy beach ?
« on: June 06, 2013, 02:14:58 PM »
The beach is always moving. Daily changes due to wind and tide can be quite subtle - but after a storm you might well see dramatic differences. Vast quantities of sand will sometimes move from one end of the bay to the other - then slowly it makes its way back!
