Announcements / New Hosting
« on: October 21, 2020, 04:25:50 PM »
Wow it has been a while.
Hope you are all well.

I will shortly be moving the Forum to a new WebHost.
It should all be pretty straightforward (famous last words!).

Because it takes a while for the DNS name changes to propagate I will put the forum in maintenance mode so that way we won't lose any posts.

So you won't be able to post new messages for a while. Tomorrow morning should be back up and running.

Plakias / Plakias Weather
« on: February 06, 2016, 07:37:28 PM »
As many of you already know, Nikos at Medousa maintains a Weather Station for the National Observatory of Athens.

You can find the uploaded data here.

It has been a bit patchy recently and is not currently updating.

Anyway being the sad individual that I am, I also maintain a Weather Station here in Whitton, West London and one for my father in Ilfracombe, Devon.

So I thought I would do a comparison between the 3 locations to see who is the warmest, coldest, windiest, wettest etc.
The results aren't hugely surprising!

If you are interested in the data I have attached two spreadsheets here for the last two years, there are different worksheets in the spreadsheets.
It should be fairly self-explanatory if you look at them.

Taking 2014 as an example (as 2015 is missing some data for December in Plakias) we see that:

Highest Average (whole day) - Plakias 361, Whitton 4
Highest Max - Plakias 330, Whitton 30, Ilfracombe 4
Lowest Min - Whitton 211, Ilfracombe 153, Plakias 1
Windiest (Average) - Plakias 211, Whitton 129, Ilfracombe 24*
Wettest - Whitton 171, Ilfracombe 135, Plakias 59
* Anenometer placement not good, windier in reality.

Nothing hugely surprising there.

Though it doesn't tell the whole story, you need to look at the detail.

For example in Jan/Feb 2015 Plakias had an incredible 700mm+ of rain, way more than my total for the year.

I need to update the spreadsheets with sheets for rain and wind, i'll get around to that sometime.

Forum and Website discussion / The Great Plakias Forum Christmas Giveaway
« on: December 03, 2013, 03:14:12 PM »
Yes we have had Black Friday and Cyber Monday but they have just been the warm-up to the spectacular event that is the first Plakias Forum Christmas Giveaway... Hurrah!

I have not one, not two but three of these beauties to give away:

With one of these beautiful (if slightly not level) key-rings you will; always have something on hand to remind you of happy Plakias days, never lose your keys again, be the envy of your friends, wonder how you survived all these years without one and become infinitely more attractive *

All you need to do to in order to stand a chance of achieving greatness is to post a response to this topic.

In the event of there being more than 3 responses I will randomly pick the select few.

When I hear you ask? Oooh I don't know, in a couple of weeks time so you can have it in time for Christmas.

Good Luck!

Announcements / Tapatalk Support Added
« on: January 11, 2012, 08:26:00 PM »
I have added Tapatalk support to the Forum.

Basically if you are using a smartphone, (i.e iPhone, Android, Blackberry etc) you can have the forum served up in an easy to use way on your phone.

You could always look at the Forum via the Browser on your phone but that doesn't look great on the small screens.

More info can be found here

It generally is a Paid for App, though if you are an Android user you can get it free via GetJar.

I have added some photos from this year and last into the Media Section:

These are embedded from Flickr, I'll post an FAQ as to how to do this in case any of you have any Flickr photos you can share with us.

Forum and Website discussion / Articles back... almost
« on: October 29, 2011, 09:00:02 PM »
After a lot of faffing about with database queries I have managed to import our articles (along with comments and ratings) from the old system.

There maybe a few things wrong like missing images, plus the comment count doesn't work yet (i'll need to manually do that), but generally its all there.
Oh and the dates are all wrong but I guess we can live with that for now.

Announcements / Media Gallery Available
« on: October 26, 2011, 09:23:07 PM »
Some of you may have noticed that there is a Media Gallery available (Media on the menu bar) where you can browse pictures that others have uploaded.

You can also upload your own pictures, group them into Albums, add descriptions etc.

The system is set to downsize any photos that are uploaded so that they don't take up too much space.

First Tip :)

Nice to have personal messaging back again.

Just be aware it doesn't save your sent items by default (that had me confused, thought it wasn't working, sorry for the messages Barny  ;) )

There is a setting in your Preferences for My Messages.

Announcements / New Forum
« on: October 25, 2011, 04:42:37 PM »
So this is it... after what seems like aeons we have moved the forum to a new hosting supplier.

With this comes a change in Forum software. Hopefully it should be pretty easy to use and not too dissimilar to what we are used to.

Over the coming weeks I will be making changes to it and keeping you posted.

Announcements / Forum is moving
« on: October 24, 2011, 04:10:56 PM »
The time has come to move the forum.
Invision has served us well but now that I have new hosting it makes sense to consolidate websites on UK based hosting that is cheaper.

Also we would have soon had an upgrade of the forum software forced upon us. This would have removed all of the modifications that have been added over the years.

In a couple of days time I will transfer the forum over and do some testing. I can leave the 'old' one still available but once the domain name servers are updated you will be redirected to the new servers.

The forum software will be different but hopefully nothing too drastic and your old username and password should work fine.

John is also getting ready to rewrite a new main site but i'll let him tell you about that.

This year I will get up there but I have a few questions for the veterans who have scaled it.

I won't have a car so the first obstacle is getting there, probably a bit too far to walk.

What about hiring a mountain bike? What would that journey be like? Could I get it to the top? If not is there anything I could chain it to at the bottom? (Do the hire places give you locks any way?)

What is a good time of day to go with regards to photos? It looks like Plakias is roughly ENE from there so don't want to leave it too late or you will have the sun in the frame.
