Where to stay / Re: Apollo Philoxenia
« on: November 23, 2018, 08:58:09 PM »
Hi, I can tell you where The Apollo apartments are, but I have never stayed there, always been to Costas Chrysoulla. The Apollo apartments are immediately due north of Costas, on the same small side street off the street that comes from the seafront toward the countryside. It was quiet there when we visited this October, but in pst years, in season, it always seemed lively. Got a pool and bar, and, like Costas, very close to everything.
Olympic must have only just added this place in the last few days, probably a reaction to reduced capacity elsewhere, The Apollo would be somewhere I would seriously consider, along with Manolis apartments, but the latter is not in Olympic, only if you go indepenently, which is easy, given that Olympic only use Easyjet, you can book yourselves, and that no transfers are included, so a 220 euro return taxi (from Zak) is also needed.
Hope this helps.

Where to eat...or not! / Re: Fresh Kalamari
« on: November 04, 2018, 04:14:30 PM »
We have just returned from our usual October break in Plakias, and can confirm that The Sirocco does do Calamari, the whole squid, fresh, which I have never seen in Plakias before, only ever seen it in Lesvos in our June holidays. I think it must be seasonal, but not too sure. The whole thing, tossed in a flour mix, and lightly fried is gorgeous, and does as a starter for two of us, a little expensive at 10 - 12 euros, but worth it! I am sure other places advertised Calamari, I think one of them was the old kafenion down the side street, next to The Cosy Back Yard.
Missing Plakias already, roll on the release of Easyjet flights to Crete any time soon!

Plakias / Re: Olive oil on tables

We were in Foinikounta, near Kalamata, this June, and the Olive Oil was only available in bottles if you paid for it, obviously sticking to the rules for once!

Back in Plakias in 3 weeks time - Woo-Hoo!!

Well done Dionysos, both cameras up and running nicely. We will be back in October and looking like idiots when waving at the cameras for family back home!
Hope you got it done safely without incident.

Hi Daza,
I suspect loads of people read the postings, but have little to say in return, a bit like me,. Unless someone asks a specific question that I can help with, I, too, stay quiet!
This may make you jealous, but I will be able to give you a report on Plakias when we get back from there. We are going, yet again to Kostas, same room, in October, 10 days, with Olympic, and using Zacharias for the taxi. I would be interested to hear what you think of Arillas as I often like to take a last minute cheapy to Greece, and need other choices than Plakias, Lesvos and around Kalamata, but that are still small and unspoilt, is there anywhere left like that?
Sorry we won't see you in Plakias this year, enjoy Arillas, and we may yet meet again next year, somewhere in Greece.

Plakias / Re: Any Plakias Updates?
« on: March 22, 2018, 03:43:34 PM »
It looks bad, confirmed from watching KritiTV, where they are reporting on bad fires in some forests and olive growing areas, strong winds breaking tree branches, and then an outside broadcast from what looks like Mars. The presenter was wearing a face mask, and with my basic Greek and the Greek titles underneath, I could make out the word Africa, but everything was red! That must explain the webcam from Morpheus.

Olympic did their '12 islands of Christmas' again this year, so, not wanting to disappoint them, I shook their hand before they sobered up and clinched a great deal to KC for 10 days in October again!
We will be off to Finikounda in the Peloponese in June for the firat time, but will be on the lookout for a bargain deal to Plakias any other time.
Can't wait to get back to Greece, and Plakias especially.

Lovely, if a little upsetting, to hear of the good times to be had in Plakias out of season. Wish we were there all of the time like you.
We were there in October, and saw the labrador on many many occasions, running into and out of the sea by the tavernas on the front, always wondered whose dog it was, now we know. Hope to be back next year, but will need to dig deeper into the old pockets as Easyjet and Olympic prices keep going up, and, good as it is, we do not want to eat at the souvlaki hut every day(I know, it is now a 'proper' place)
Have a Happy Christmas and do keep us all informed of all the local news.

Where to eat...or not! / Re: Restaurants in Plakias

Noopsy, thanks for the newer list, it will come in handy this October for our only visit this year, but at least it's 10 days, more time to visit more tavernas! Can I ask if the prices have been updated from the earlier editions of your list? Especially bearing in mind the exchange rate, but we will not be restricting ourselves for the sake of a few euros, life is too short.

Are you solely concerned with Chania or Heraklion?
We will be going to Heraklion in October, as we always do, and I am hoping that as it is a relatively quiet time of year, there will be little delay. I suspect the press is looking at mass tourism destinations, at peak season, with many flights from the UK and outside Schengen areas, where there will inevitably be delays due to the greater number of tourists. The smaller, quieter airports shouldn't be too bad.
We landed in Mytiline (Lesvos) in June this year, and did notice that the passport check was properly thorough, you had to hand the passport to the border guard, and details were entered/checked on their computer, something that has rarely happened in the recent past, so there was a small delay, but as Mytiline gets so few UK flights ( 2 a week this year!!) I don't thing it will ever be a problem there, nor at Kalamata airport, where we also go each year, and is smaller still than Mytiline.
Leaving Greece posed no extra problems, just waved through!
Heraklion can be a nightmare at busy times, so lets hope any extra security won't make it worse, never had the pleasure of flying in to Chania, but views expressed here on the forum suggest it is a nicer experience than Heraklion.
P.S. only 10 weeks to go to Plakias!!!!!

Didn't see the moment that was mentioned, but guessing it was one of the Preveli day trip boats.
Off to Lesvos in 2 weeks, Plakias in October, maybe Kalamata inbetween!!!!

Kalimera Nikos,
So much to see in the photo! In the background bottles of tequila (for me when not drinking ouzo) and gin (for my other half). The clock and Nikos' watch give the time as 6.39, so that's breakfast then, On The Rocks style?
See you again in October Nikos, keep some Plomari/Mytiline ouzo ready for our arrival.

My guess is that the snow has killed them, and Dionysos doesn't want to get up there and fix it! Check out the webcam for Molyvos on Lesvos for snow as well http://www.skylinewebcams.com/webcam/ellada/north-aegean/lesbos/lesbos-mithymna-molyvos.html

Holiday Companies / Re: Olympic (again)
« on: December 31, 2016, 01:03:36 PM »
Hi, Just to say I got in on the 12 islands thingy again this year, so Plakias Oct 2017 sorted, and at a good price, the website and 'phone advisor could not find anything to Plakias in October, but he put together a 'taylor made' holiday, and the price was exactly what it had been the previous day, but with the 50 per person deducted, so, as they say, I shook his hand before he sobered up! The transfers are a bit of a devil, as others have found out only Olympic's own charters come with a transfer included, but do use taxi4you.gr - Zacharias is very reliable, and he has quoted us the same price for 2017 as we paid in 2016! He lives opposite KC, so knows his way there.
I did look on Christmas day when the promo was on again, and we could have gone to KC on 16th. May for 1 week, with transfers, flying Enter Air from Gatwick for 307 - I now wish I had raided the grandkids piggy bank and booked it, I am sure I could survive 1 week eating pitta souvlaki and drinking Mythos to save the eating out costs.
Have a good new year to all, see you in Plakias and Anaxos if you're lucky.
