Gossip / Hard rain on crete...

By the way. How was the wind (which blew terribly hard when we were there11) The Meltemi? if I am not worong. I look forward to meeting with some forum members too, next summer

I was there at the same time as Alex for two weeks and had the privilidge of meeting him. Hope you can do the same one day.

The effects of the fire are obvious but already visually receding.

During our 2 weeks there was only one windy day and the rest of the time was marked for most of the time by the complete lack of any wind - not even a slight breeze. We left a few days before the rain storms.

we flew back on the tuesday, travelling to chania airport in horendous conditions.  We saw cars washed away, divers in the water looking for survivors, you couldnt tell roads from rivers, water was pouring in our coach.  When we got to the airport there was nothing landing or taking off. We eventualy got on our plane late evening only to find the plane had engine trouble with all the rain.  We finaly took of with the most horrible sounding engine noise ever!  I was glad to get back home, the good news was I had an extra day off work!  It hasnt put me off going back, already planning next years return.

PlakChat / floods

just got back from plakias on late tusday night after crete sufered their worst flooding ever.  had a wonderful time in plakias, definately going back next year.  Loved the food especialy in mouses! Does anyone know what had become of plakias after the flooding.  We left just before the worst hit, was on the way to the airport in horrendous weather.  Plakias had no electric and all the roads were shut.  Doesnt put us of going back next year!

what is the best hiking map for plakias and can i get one there, any info would be a great help.  Of to plakias on tuesday!

I use the Lance Chilton one that comes with his Plakias Walks book(s) from Marengo publications. See their website. It is too late for you to order by mail order but I have been told you can buy them in Plakias; if you are going on a package tour then I'm sure either Morven or Ali will know. I'm sure the map will be fine for your needs.

Ive ordered Petrakis Rethimo part 2 from amazon, which i hope to get before Friday.  This was recommended by someone whos been there. Thanks for your info.  Counting the days now!

sorry its taken a while to reply, work, work,work!  I now have my map my suitcase is down from the top of the wardrobe. This is my first time in Plakias.  My partner Mike has never been before either.  We have just returned from Sierra Nevada national park and had a great time, climbimg the highest mountain in Spain,over 11,000 feet! Let you know how we get on in Plakias

Of to plakiason tuesdaay  does anyone know what is the best hiking map and can i get one ther never been before, any info would be a great help

Us too - Plakias Tuesday - just fished our map out of suitcase :-

1:100,000 scale map by Petrakis - 4 parts (we have the Rethimo part 2 for Plakias area

It has on front :-

Crete
Rethimno
Walking and Driving
On the Island of Contrast
It includes the European Climbing Route as well as the main mountain OUS routes of Crete

You can find them ni shops in Rehthimon and Aghia Galina - not sure about Plakias but probably somewhere.

There are maps for sale in Plakias for the immediate local walks
