Gossip / Hard rain on crete...
« on: October 28, 2006, 07:24:01 AM »
From time to time when I need a break and a bit of relaxation I get on the forum to hear new about Plakias - such a wonderful place which I visited in June-July this year for the 1st time. I witnessed the big fire and both i and my boyfriend were almost crying with anger at the impossibility of doing something for the local people, the nature around and the thousands of beautiful olive trees which accompanied us each time we went down the hills to the beach and back to Myrthios. Now I hear about the floods which also took people's lives and I feel the same. On the other hand there are cyclic periods  with this terrible kind of weather and we have to cope with it. I live in a country (Romania) which have never experienced (at least in recent history) a tornado.!!! And in the last couple of years there have been two which took people by total surprise and destroyed their houses and belongings.
Alex, I am glad you liked Plakias so much. I don't know if you remember but before you went there we have exchanged a few words about my immediate impressions and feelings after coming back from a wonderful holiday full of joy and sadness (because of the fire) at the same time. Let's hope that the wonderful people of Crete are recovering from all these terrible disasters as soon as possible.
Ciao and see you next year in Plakias!
By the way. How was the wind (which blew terribly hard when we were there11) The Meltemi? if I am not worong. I look forward to meeting with some forum members too, next summer

We stayed at the Chrisanti, the last house in the village on the way to Selia. Super clean and civilized. Breathtaking view of the Plakias gulf, quiet and very pleasant. The studio is Euros 35 and you have everything for self catering, they change towels and bed linnen every 2 days....It is excellent. You will find the address on www.annaview.com. But you have to bear in mind that you need a car to go but especially to come back from the beach. We had the car only one week and the 2nd we sinply lost some weight and enjoyed going down and up the superd olive trees hills!!!

As far as I know they have the same price all year round! We stayed there between June 24 - July 7!

Hi everyone! First post for me!
I'm Alex from Italy
Ehm, sorry if my English is not perfect!

I've never been in Plakias.. till this September, that I will go there with my girlfriend...
Thank you all for the precious informations you gave me! I've been reading you for several days!

But now, searching for an accomodation, I've found this:
http://www.interkriti.net/hotel/plakias/ioanna/index.html

Anyone has been in there ? It seems a very nice place and very cheap!
Note that I will rent a car, so no problem to me if the place is not near to the town-centre!
Bye,
Alex

Hi Alex,

I am Iana from Romania and I returned from Plakias 2 weeks ago. It was our first time in this part of Crete (we have been several times before on the Northern coast) and I am so proud to have choseN Plakias.  It is a magic place but not isolated and it has every ingredient for a perfect, relaxing holiday. I loved it and definitely I will be back. Villa Ioanna is situated on the road between Plakias and Damnoni beach. I saw it several times and noticed it because of its name which is exactly like in Romanian. we thought Ioana is a very Romanian, but.... seems is of Greek origin, however. The house looks very neat and nice but you have to take into account it is not in Plakias. We stayed in Myrthios, the wonderful village above Plakias. The only "bad" thing we had to cope with was the Meltemi (the western wind) which decided to blow exactly when we were there. In spite of this, we loved everything about Plakias. The tavernas, the bars, the fact that music is of good qualityd it is not blasting in the loudspeakers and the people around are more of a bohemic nature than of the standard tourist (whom I hate). If you have the car go around to all the beaches (they are great), to Preveli Monastery, and all the other places around! Have a great holiday!!!!! And who knows maybe we'll meet in Plakias next year!

Plakias / FIRE

I'm sure that forum members will wish to extend their sympathy to all the locals affected by the fire and I hope the library survived.

I am a new member of the forum who has been in Plakias when the fire started but had to leave on the 7th and as far as I understand the worst started on the 8th. I cannot express in words what I feel for the people and this special place which I visited for the first time this summer. I have decided to go to Plakias mostly based on your forum and the comments made by the members and I was sure I will soon become addicted to this place. I would also want to express my sypathy but at the same time to tell all the Plakians to look on the bright side of the road. We are with them and next year I will be there again!

Plakias / FIRE

It was just about ten in the morning when we were preparing for breakfast in sofia 200m from the secret nest) and went out to the balcony when we first mentioned the smoke rising from behind the hill behind plakias where the path to the old mill leads to. During the morning the smoke was getting more and thicker and around high noon the fire was first to be seen from our rooms in philoxenia. Till then the locals seem not to be so much upset but then they ran... we packed our childrens teddybears and left in the direction of the promenade where lotwsof people stood spectating the disaster with open mouth and some with tears in their eyes. The whole village was in thick smoke and ashes rained from the sky.  As the fire crept down the hill driven by those extreme winds there was not much hope that plakias itself would be able to flee the disaster. But the heroic work of all those firemen and firewomen managed to fight that hazardous fire back from the houses and it made its way more southerly in the direction of souda and burnt down till it reached the sea. Now, two days later live seems to be as normal. Tomorrow we'll try to walk the way to the old mill which we made just the day before the big fire and see what has been left of the valley's beauty. The fire is over. After our return I'll post some photos of the nightmare...

I have just registered on this forum which I had consulted several times before going to Plakias for the first time, this month. We have just returned on the 7th (we were there in Myrthios when the fire started) hoping that they had managed to put it off the following day. Thank God nobody was hurt but we can imagine what is in the poor people's hearts and souls. We were almost crying at seeing those beautiful olive trees which "accompanied" us every morning when going down the hills and then in the afternoons when getting back to Myrthios, ablaze but never imagined that the disaster would turn to be so devastating! I really hope that no human beings is involved in this. But if this is true then......We have fallen in love with the place and will be back next year, for sure...in spite of the terrible wind that blew almost 2 weeks (the time we stayed there)!!!
