i just feel it has become busy and lost a bit if its laid back feel e.g. people reserving tables in restaurants was never a thing before.  we now tend to eat late afternoon or in the mountain restaurants to avoid the crowds.  anyhow we still love Plakias and have many friends here. The surrounding landscape remains as spectacular as ever.  in process of booking for next year!

we go independent so not sure about Olympic.  Far end still the same.

depending on when you come you may find the village very busy.  also the number of cars compared to the old days is staggering.

the clientele too have changed.

but we still keep returning.

Here at the moment for our 35th year I think.  Yes there have been many changes and new accommodation sprouting up in many places.  It may no longer have its end of the road feel and hardly a backpacker or hippie in sight but for us it still has its magic and we can reminisce about the old days.

As with nearly everywhere prices have gone up but it is still possible to dine out for reasonable price.

So worth revisiting to see for yourself I'd say.  The mountains and sea remain the same.

Understand where you?re coming from Daniel but I?m not ready to give up on Plakias yet.

I remember the days of no sunbeds on any of the beaches, a longer dirt track to Souda that went further up the hill, a scramble over the rocks past Damnoni, no Hapimag, no beach bars.  Also power cuts, communal fridges on the landing and cold showers!

I think you?re correct in saying Plakias now has many more day visitors as evidenced by the sheer number of cars everywhere.  It certainly has lost its ?end of the road? hippie/backpacker vibe of yesteryear which is a shame.  Still the views of the mountains and out to sea remain.

Hope you find an alternative.

Going home tonight after 2 great weeks.  Weather wonderful (only 2 days with any real wind to speak of) and the sea fantastic for swimming.  Yes Plakias is bigger and busier but won?t stop me returning next year.

Where to eat...or not! / Re: Lysseos

In Plakias at the moment and enjoying our evenings in Lysseos as usual.  However just to advise that Lysseos will be closing at the end of the season as Lucas and Lito are retiring.  Wishing them all the best but we sure will miss them.  Many great memories to look back on.

Yes, so I?ve heard.  I?ve been frequenting Lysseos for more than 30 years and reckon I must have eaten there at least 500 times and that equates to a heck of a lot of jugs of red wine!  Will be back In September to enjoy our last supper at Lysseos and to wish Lucas and Lito a long and healthy well earned retirement.  I think for us Plakias will never be quite the same again.

lucky you!  I?m back in September.  Meanwhile if you?re back in Lysseos give my regards to Lito and Lucas - I wholeheartedly agree the best food in town.

Yamas.

Moto auto plakias.  Have used them for many years and can highly recommend.  They can also do airport transfers.

I was there last September and it was the busiest I've seen in over 30 years.  Not really an issue and good to see all the businesses busy.  Cars everywhere.  I wondered if people were avoiding the bigger  resorts due to covid and hiring cars to avoid public transport.

Plakias much the same with old familiar faces.  Bars etc a bit trendier each year.  New supermarket even has an escalator!

Major new complexes along the beach road but fortunately set far back in landscaped gardens so not too much a blot on the landscape when you're on the beach.

Overall it was great to be back and looking forward to September visit again.

Sorry to hear about problem you are having - no idea why you can?t be found on the system.  I did my test through the doctor at the medical centre and got the result and certificate back within a couple of hours.  I booked an appointment for the test however and am not sure if you can just turn up.  Good luck.

I?m still here Daniel and pretty much agree all your sentiments.  A bit cooler today and supposedly to drop to low 20s tomorrow with a little rain.

In the 30+ years I?ve been coming I?ve never known Plakias be so busy and as you say cars everywhere. I wonder if due to COVID people are choosing smaller resorts and avoiding the big hotels on the north coast?

Also agree about Lysseos - been there every night.  The one thing that hasn?t changed one little bit over the years.  The heart and soul of Plakias.

In the new shopping centre on the beach road.  Takes you down into the basement but as far as I you see you need to come back up the stairs - or take the lift!

Made it!  All in all a very straight forward trip on EasyJet from Edinburgh.  No major queues at Edinburgh and Heraklion was a dream.

The plane was about half full and we arrived half an hour early.

Probably the least stressful trip I?ve ever had.  So if you?re having doubts about travelling just now I?d say go for it.  A bit breezy this morning but set to get hot at the weekend.
