PlakChat / What I'd like is...

I`m an ecstatic wanderer to Plakias for the past 18 or so years, and loved the Meltemi.  However, it sounds like the Finikas is now THE PLACE TO GO.  Was in Plakias in June, but did not see it!   Rather like a fellow contributor to this site who did not see the fountain, I`m putting the cause down to not only raki but wonderful home-made feta in Myrthios!!   Will be wandering to Plakias Youth Hostel in a few weeks`time so please tell me where I can find Finikas!

I read in the newspapers that Plakias all together had a good  season 2005 and that there are Hotels having guest until 15th of November. In Hapimag a small group of pensioners will make their overwinter holidays and also Anna's has guest. Surely Plakias will be again the most lively village on the south coast this winter. Let's hope we dont get too much of rain and cold days, just enough for the olives and flowers.

How good to hear happy news from Plakias!  To think of this wonderful place being `alive` all year is certainly rather exciting.  I am still trying to sell my house and still trying to learn some Greek - once the former is accomplished Plakias will be my destination.   Best wishes to you all.  Cecile

Where to eat...or not! / The Balcony at the Ostraco

sadly it doesn't look like we'll be getting back to Plakias this year    so I'm left with my memories of May ( and prior years)

one of our favourite things is a last drink on the balcony at the Ostraco, overlooking the bay, watching people walking past and generally chilling out, there's only one other place where a Mythos tastes so good

What a beautiful picture from the upstairs balcony at Ostraco - brought back so many memories.  As you say, it is usually that last drink before going `home`, although I am not sure exactly where home is sometimes!!  I know that more and more of me remains at Plakias each time I visit.   Sorry to hear you cannot make another trip this year, but just imagine - my last visit was Oct 04!!  Thanks again for posting the photo.  I know I will not be the only one to be sighing ........

Plakias / Snake business

 Hallo Barny - so glad that you both had a good holiday - well, it`s rather impossible not to in Plakias!   You placed a very interesting post telling of new places you had visited.  However, can you expand a little on "the snake business".  Have I missed something?

 Hallo again - many thanks to Ali and Dave and to albertdiver for responses to my questions.   With regard to learning Greek, I am trying here with my BBC course!!  It is great fun.  Look forward to visiting the library.

I have had a good visit to the reiki.kreta website which is most interesting and Mixorouma is, as you say, much closer than Agios Pavlos.  I could understand the German enough to see that they have set up what appears to be an excellent `sanctuary`.

I am writing this from a sunny south coast of England, but not as sunny as Plakias I am sure.

 Thank you Graham and Karen and harribobs for your good wishes - sorry not to have replied earlier - must have been dreaming about Plakias.  House not sold yet, but I`m sure I will be on my way soon.  Can anyone tell me exactly where the library is?   Is it the building on the corner that looked as though it might once have been a primary/infant school?  Am intrigued and can`t wait to visit.  Also, where are the Greek lessons and who is the tutor?  Does anyone know if Agios Pavlos is still an holistic health centre - reiki, etc?   So many questions ......  Many thanks and good wishes to all.

Plakias / Plakias , where the summer never ends

I know Plakias very well lived there for 11 years. Because of my work I moved to Rethymno. I would like to recommend Plakias here for overwintering holidays. There a many sunny days on the south of Crete and untill December you may encounter the beach for swimming and sunning. The place is less crowded of course, but because the locals live there and are not moving back to the cities in the winter, there is also some nightlife with taverns and bars that stay open. Accommodations, with heathing are available, like Anna's and Koules and Zambia. Also Morpheas or many other places that can help you with good rates for longer periods. Than from Januari when spring is making the country like a postcard you can make beautiful walks in the area. See the farmers, collecting their olives, maybe give them a hand and get some oil for your help. If you have no job obligations, why not change your rainy or cold place for a few months in Spring on Crete and come to Plakias, where the summer never ends.

Having visited Plakias for many years I have decided to spend a few months in this wonderful place (who knows it may be a few years).  I am so interested by your information re winter in Plakias and, when I have sold my house in England, I will be looking for somewhere to rent in Plakias hopefully/probably through the winter months.   It is very reassuring that Plakias will be staying alive during the winter and that it will be possible to learn some Greek, as I believe it is important to speak at least a little of this wonderful language.  Will keep you all posted as to when I shall arrive and look forward to joining the Plakias and Mirthios community.

One restuarant with a ramp I have noticed is the Lysseos[a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=3854\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a]

I noticed this ramp, but is it useable? It looked to be about 45 degrees to me!

Hallo again - it`s Cecile!

I refer to Graeme`s recommendation for Taverna Kastro  -  yes it is a great place.  I have had lunch there on several occasions and loved  the view - and the food.

You are right Graeme, for such a view one would have appeared to have climbed half a mountain, but it is a very easy walk and well worth the incline.

Lunch or dinner in Mirthios is not to be missed - have frequented both Plateia and Panorama and do not really have a favourite.   It is quite difficult to choose because Plateia now has a very `up market for Mirthios` facade, but the food and conviviality are exceptional.  It was only a few years ago that one sat in a very windy place at Plateia and the kitchen was across the road.   Very romantic and delightful with Frederiko and his charming waiter whose name escapes me crossing the road from the kitchen with the most delightful Cretan delicacies - this has not changed but one no longer needs layers of clothes because there is a roof!! and walls!!  

This may not be the right place to discuss the train, but is it still running and is Marianna still doing her wonderful excursions?

This is my first post, and I have already confused the site by sending just a heart icon thru`!!   Sorry, will try to do better this time.

As a frequent visitor to Plakias (well, once a year for about 16 years) I am sad to see such bickering about this beautiful and spiritual place.  I agree with Susan that enough is enough, but I would just like to say that perhaps(?) Graeme may prefer a hotel environment where he may (?) find more facilities to his liking.  After all, we all want different things on holiday.  

I would just like to tell of an experience I had involving rubbish!   There are different systems for each apartment - some take your rubbish away and some don`t.  I realised quite soon that I was responsible for putting my rubbish in the orange bin just up the road.   Had I not done this I would have missed a cultural and very moving experience, as on the way back I passed the church where a funeral was about to start.  The road was crowded with local people and thankfully I had a large scarf around my shoulders, so I decided to at a distance join the ceremony (outside the church).   I felt privileged to be there and interested in the Greek Orthodox ways of behaving.   Never has putting the rubbish out been such a fascinating and memorable experience.

I have only ever encountered great kindness from Plakias people and indeed all other Greeks.  In fact their generosity is overwhelming at times.  May I boldly suggest to all who may worry about hot water, rubbish collection, etc that there may be more fascinating experiences on which to concentrate.

On that note I wish all who are in Plakias or who are about to depart for this magical place, a wonderful stay.
