PlakChat / Re: Strategic flights in doubt?
« on: May 21, 2012, 10:17:12 PM »
We flew with Strategic when we went to Plakias last year and had no problems with them, the flight times changed by about an hour from when we booked but that was nothing.  However this year we're having a change and going to Paxos and the return flight has changed by almost 9 hours.  We should have arrived back into Manchester at 1730 and are now arriving back after 2am the following morning.  Not good for my OH who is back at work that day!  We tried to transfer to the East Midlands Jet2 flight but Olympic were going to charge a hefty admin fee.  Ah well on the positive side I get an extra 9 hours in Greece - luckily I'd already booked the next day off work  ;)

Thanks for posting about this as I was only planning on bringing about £50 in euros and using the ATM for the rest .  We've 2 months to wait yet so hopefully the ATMs will be fully operational again  by then.

Glad you had such a great time Jann and pleased the Strategic flight was ok as we're flying with them from Manchester at the end of September.  We've booked the meals as it was only £6.99 return and I figured we wouldn't have got a drink and a snack for that price.  The prices is Plakias still seem very reasonable and we'll definitely be eating at Mousses

Is Angelo the barman back at Kostas this summer?

 Hi Gemma,
I would also book a meal next time.

I made another 'mistake' sorry, it was Medoussa who had the 3 courses for 19 euros.

The cheapest wine was at Sifi's  ( E 2.50 for half a litre. ) and the most expensive was at Argo, E5 for a half litre and E9 for 1 litre.  but they have the most comfy chairs and you also get a glass of water and a dish of mixed nuts!

Angelos should have come last weekend but was delayed, but he will probably be there by this weekend !

Bet you can't wait for September, I'm also thinking of trying to get back Sep/Oct if I can

Glad to hear that Angelos is due back   Ate at Mousses a lot last time and do like it there but will probably try Medoussa too )  Good luck in getting another trip booked before the end of the year.

Where to go / Santorini
« on: October 16, 2010, 09:20:12 AM »
Glad to hear you enjoyed Santorini, I've been twice, though only for 3 days at a time, and the views over the caldera are awesome   .  Its good to hear the prices were similar to Plakias as I've always found Santorini to be a bit more expensive, especially in Fira.   I've stayed in Oia both times I've been so might give Perissa a try next time.  Hoping to go back to Santorini in 2012 if we go island hopping again, though we'll probably only stay for a few days and explore some new islands, hopefully Milos and Sikinos
Fantastic photos

Just booked to go back to Kostas on 27th September 2011.  Couldn't resist the Olympic 72 hour summer sale prices at less than £300 each including extra luggage allowance and meals on flights

Hi may see you there as we go on the 21st for 2 weeks :-)  [attachment=756:Photo0017.jpg] Looking forward to seeing Mine hosts once again.

OOps sorry just noticed yours is next year

Dotty

I'm afraid I've got to wait until next year Dotty as I'm going to Symi this September.  Hope you have a great time and everybody is well

Plakias / Timeos Stavros

I'm not sure if I'm on the correct track here - if you'll excuse the pun but last September we walked right round the headland starting and finishing at the Plakias Bay Hotel. There is now a very spectacular new concrete stair case down the cliff face to the Kalypso Hotel and one can walk down that, past the hotel and onward round the headland. A very easy walk and one of the best values for effort in our opinion. The previous year we got to the half built stairway down to the Kalypso and had we continued and stepped of the then bottom step we would have plunged a considerable drop on to the Kalypso Hotel driveway. Health and Safety left to common sense and sighted people in that area. The stairway is obviously now complete !! This walk will be high on our list of to do's when we get there in 8 days time.

John R

Will definitely give this one a try John.  Think I'll start cutting and pasting a few bits into a new document to add to the literature I've already got on Plakias

Mike, my memory's not so good and we aren't the best at finding or keeping to paths but I do remember that we started at the path behind the Plakias Bay hotel that gets you to the top of the cliff, then walked round the headland some way. There were two opportunities to climb. I think walking further round got to the easier route where, looking up you could see a saddle. No path as such but easy enough climbing to the top of the saddle, then left following the ridge to the peak.

Was this a difficult walk and can you remember roughly how long it took you? I'm looking for some new walks to do when we go back next year but in the Lance Chiltern book I've got the walk starts from Lefkoyia. I don't want anything too strenuous but wouldn't mind giving this a go if it's not too difficult.

Are there any other walking books on the area around Plakias apart from Lance Chiltern's?

Gemma -Kaka Mouri is certainly not as strenuous as Timeos Stavros and I'd think you'd want to start from Plakias, not Lefkoyia. Even if you don't get to the top, it's still worth following the path round the headland at the level of the top of the cliff. You can get good views of the Kalypso hotel. As an alternative to LC's book, have a look at Peter Thomson's walks at: http://www.peter-thomson.co.uk/crete/Where...ng_Plakias.html
From there you'll find lots of walks listed although there's a limited number of circular walks. Following the irrigation channel is very pleasant.

Thanks for the link to Peter Thomson's website, there are some stunning pictures
