Plakias / Vegetarian eating in Plakias
« on: December 12, 2010, 06:38:32 PM »
I thought I would post this - a bit late - as it may be useful for those who have not been to Plakias before.

My partner and I stayed in Plakias for the first two weeks of September 2010. We are both mostly veggie, though we occasionally eat fish, and my partner cannot eat egg. Having been to Greece around 20 times between us, we found Plakias to have one of the best selections of Greek food for vegetarians of any resort we have visited.

Mostly this was variations on the usual themes - starters such as fried courgettes or aubergines, mains such as briam, stuffed tomatoes or imam. But more tavernas had a wider selection of these than elsewhere. Also some places had other dishes - Mouses had a nice veggie mousaka. There were some different salads too - Kastro had a rocket salad with several other ingredients.

We ate at the following tavernas (in no particular order); Gorgona, Mouses (cheap but busy), Paligremnos (not such a wide choice but we went for the live music on Thursday evenings), Kastro (on a road a little way up behind the village – great views), Sofia (including once for pizza), Christos, Manouses.

We also lunched at On The Rocks (great vegetarian omelette) and Livicon, and breakfasted at Livicon and Argo.

Plakias was also on the cheap side for Greece - at least compared to Alonissos, Pilion, and Zakynthos, which we have visited in the past two years.

Plakias / Translation
« on: September 14, 2010, 04:26:04 PM »
Transliteration - possibly not 100% accurate - I can read the alphabet but only speak a few words and phrases;

Dorea Georgias Elena Xanaki Katakesvasthi En Ete 2010.

I guess/assume words 2, 3, 4 are names. "En Ete 2010" would mean "in Summer 2010" in French.........

My dictionary gives "doro" as "to present", and "katakevazo" as "to make or manufacture". I don't know enough about Greek verbs to be sure that the words on the inscription are forms of those verbs, but it seems a good bet.

[Information here about the library.

Thanks very much. I had not found that thread; I thought I had seen some reference to a library closing, so it is good to know that it is up and running. Problem (how many books to bring with me) solved!

On the subject of books, are there any tavernas or bars that have a book-swap facility?

I don't usually read detective novels but I have "The Messenger Of Athens" by Anne Zouroudi waiting to be read - but not sure if I can put off reading it for another month till we get to Plakias! I have read another in the series, "The Taint Of Midas". I don't know if it's that good a detective story or not, but I found it fascinating for its picture of Greek life, and the impact of tourism on the way people live. I have previously read most of Barbara Nadel's Inspector Ikmen series for the picture they give of life in Istanbul. All fairly easy reads.

If you want something more weighty I can recommend Mark Mazower's "Salonica, City of Ghosts: Christians, Muslims and Jews 1430-1950". Fascinating picture of what was once a very multi-cultural city under the Ottoman Empire. Gives some of the wide historical background to the events of 1922-23 referred to in "Birds Without Wings", which was mentioned in a recent post.

Where to go / Any music or folk dance in early September?
« on: July 27, 2010, 10:20:32 AM »
Hi,
my partner and I have recently booked for our first holiday in Plakias, 2 weeks from 31 August at Kostas (have posted more about this in the Kostas thread). Does anyone know of any live music and/or folk dance events in the area at that time? We do not drive but can get the bus (probably not much use in the evening though), or a taxi if not many miles away. I teach circle dance and folk dance in the UK, and also play music, so am always interested on holiday to catch anything local. Interested in modern Greek stuff as well as traditional, if not too poppy.

Where to stay / Kostas-Chrysoulla Studios
« on: July 27, 2010, 10:12:17 AM »
Hi,
my partner and I have recently booked for our first holiday in Plakias. Thanks very much to all who have posted on these forums, it was a great help in deciding on Plakias and in giving us some information about where to go when we get there.

We will be at Kostas-Chrysoulla for 2 weeks from 31 August. Got a good deal with Olympic a couple of weeks ago, around £325 each from Newcastle. Lucky, as their hols to Kostas were reduced then went off the site a couple of days earlier, so I thought I had missed it. Started looking at travelling independently, but I went back on and the hols at Kostas had reappeared - don't know if they had a cancellation or is there was some sort of system error.

I e-mailed Olympic asking to avoid rooms 56, 62, and 67 (though for all I know 67 is in better nick now - the bad post about it that I found was quite old) and also saying we were happy not to overlook the pool - got a nice e-mail back saying that while they could not guarantee it, they had passed the request on to Kostas.

Maybe bump into some of you while we are there?
