This question just got me thinking - I wonder where the locals go on holiday
[a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=3355\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a]
Theo from "on the rocks" bar said, when asked that question...why do I want to go on holiday when I wake up in paradise everyday??!!..............

I assume you mean Harakas - next to Lysseos =which is definitely my favourite
There is an extensive menu here, but the pastitsio I had in May was the smallest and worst I have ever had in Greece. A bit like macaroni cheese, i.e. no meat. My three year old granddaughter could have managed to eat it, it was so small.

No GOI-MA is the one that shares a building next to the harbour....... Harakas has great food but a horrible view( everyone walking past at kneecap level as it is lower than the road !)

Yes that is the one, it has anice relaxed atmosphere, good menu and a welcoming owner that's why I recommend it.

What happened to the Secret Nest? Whattapitty!!!   Is there something else in the house now and what happened to the family? No rooms to let anymore? [we lived there for two weeks many years ago and we really liked the place. Whatabout Nikos Papadakis? Strange... It seems almost as if the "business plakias" is going down a little bit in the last years...?

And for Nikos: We'll even try the eyes if you only reopen the Secret Nest!!!

The family are still there and the rooms are still available, evidently the father ,or son, has more work with the building trade(excavators and trucks) so can't be bothered with the restaurant any more.

Where to stay / where to stay
« on: June 27, 2005, 03:31:17 PM »
Hi ,just got back from a fabulous 2 weeks and am going through the site and the topics just sharing my experiences!....Anyone booked for Doras Apts be aware it is very basic.....very clean, but  just about comes up to the brochures description!.....for example, only a few rooms have a window or extractor in the bathroom(youcan guess the consequences of that in a hot climate!!!)......the crockery and cutlery are hopeless ( airline plastic cutlery, odd plates, one saucepan etc. atc.) so if you have a young family and were hoping to eat in sometimes be prepared, after all it is described as Self-Catering!......the blanket was fine(great for winter!) but the top-sheet was not big enough for the bed......hot water only in the evnings......no where to hang shower head(although I did improvise with a wire coat hanger)....I,m not really complaining because I can hear you all saying "well this is Greece, what do you expect?", but after all this is 2005 !!!!....... just how far do standards have to fall before they get unacceptable?

Two years ago we choose a car from alianthos. Unfortunately we had a flat tyre during a trip to sellia [sparewheel on board]. To our surprise we had to pay 80 € [  !] though we paid the extra charge for "full insurance" Next time we will go with anso I think...

Have a good trip

PlakChat / Plakias Watersports?

Going to be going to Plakias next week and wondered if there are any watersports in the area. I enjoy windsurfing and sailing. Read there was scuba-diving but can't find any info on other watersports. Anyone advise?
[a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=3418\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a]
No watersports from Plakias beach (unless it's changed for this year) but there is a diving school at the Kalypso Hotel, about 3km from Plakias
[a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=3419\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a]
Hi I have just got back and would recommend the DIVE2GETHER  diving school it is just on the seafront down an alleyway, but well signposted. It is run by a Dutch guy and his son ,Paul, they are very helpful and extremely professional. They dive from the beach at Schinaria where they have a great set-up inc. a rescue/safety boat. I made 2 dives with them and saw lots of interesting things inc. Octopus.......You will be well looked after and I highly recommend them.

Hi, just got back after 2 weeks of pure pleasure !!....Secret Nest and Glaros are now closed.
Recommendations:-
best Restaurant overall....GOI-MA
best pre-dinner drinks....Bar of the Hotel Livicon(on seafront)
best after-dinner drinks and quiet/friendly bar....On the Rocks(last bar going out of Plakias towards Souda)
best mine-hosts.....Theo and Maria ( on the Rocks)
Restaurant with most varied menu...Haraksas (steaks/chili sausages/lemon chicken/grilled goat)
Restaurants with best views......Panorama and Plateus(think that's how you spell it) in Mrthios
Taverna with most enjoyable Cretan night......Peligremnos (Far end) on a Thursday night
well that's my choices but I'm sure wherever you go you will have a great time.M

Holiday Companies / Transfers

I agree, last year independently was a little more expensive than First Choice could do for us. However lack of the tortuous transfer makes up for that
[a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=3282\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a]

the worst i ever had was a half hour trip that took four hours because there was a drop every mile down the road  :'(
[a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=3324\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a]
Hi, we have just got back and would like to warn everyone travelling with the tour operators that the transfer took nearly 4 hours!!! we stopped at bali and every place in and outside of rethymnon(at least it felt like we did!)including a small hotel near the harbour. The transfer was on a double deck coach which had no end of problems getting into and out again of many of the places.Although I undersatnd the economics of it, it was horrendous so be prepared and make sure you have food and drink before you leave the airport.

Where to go / driving

Hi - I don't normally drive when abroad but am thinking of hiring a car this time. Is there anything I should know about before I get behind the wheel? Apart from driving on the other side of the road, of course! This is the first time I will have been to Plakias - hopefuly the roads are quite quiet?

Hi, like John says don't be put off from driving, it is fine as long as you take reasonable care. If you want a good day out to see some of the varied scenery of Crete, having just arrived back last week), I recommend the round trip of Plakias-Rethymnon(stay here and explore for an hour or two)-westwards along main coastl road toVrisses where you turn onto main road over mountains to Hora Sfakion(via Imbros Gorge)-back to Plakias via Rodakino.......It is a great drive and can be comfortably done in a day with plenty of time to stop at every place of interest along the way......Just be careful you dont miss the turning of the main road at Vrisses( look out for signs marked Sfakion)....I would recommend the Alianthos Car Hire on the seafront in Plakias, the guy is English and helpful(ask for discount!!)....Good Luck and enjoy.M

Plakias / Underwater photography

Nice picture indeed.
I dived through several times without flippers without problems.
However, that was when the sea was calm. I wouldn't suggest doing this when the sea is rough, as there might be some currents then.

My reason to dive through was that you can easily climb the rock on the other side and then jump off the Micro Ammoudi side of the rock where the water is deep enough. Big fun (and no dangerous underwater rocks)

Plakias / june 2005
« on: October 22, 2004, 05:17:16 PM »
Hi ,glad to hear everyone enjoyed themselves in Sept even though it sounded like it was rather windy! I remember on our only previous visit 8 years ago that it was windy also.
My wife and I have booked 2 weeks in June '05 at the Dora Apts. and were wondering what to expect the weather to be like earlier in the year? Is it likely to be windy then?
We have great memories of the far end and are looking forward to being there again....
best regards to all, Marmaliser.

WOW! at that price it had better be good, but isn't it a shame that the average holidaymaker is not allowed easy access to this kind of info?.....I guess it just goes to show that many in the travel industry have things to hide!
