Robert,
Thanks for the reply. I have spent a good few days now trying to get a successful hit on Marengo publications but it seems the domain name is up for sale.
The most recent address seems to be a supanet one.
I have tried other online book sites and although some stock Lance's range of books and maps the Lindos one is well out of print.

Heigh-ho.

Hi all and any,
Does anyone have any up-to-date info on Lance Chiltern and Marengowalks or where I can get access to his range of publications?
I have had dealings myself in the past when buying his excellent books and guides for walks around Plakias, but all links and sites (marengowalks.com,  marengowalks.supanet.com, etc) seem to lead nowhere.

I'm after his guide to walks around the Lindos area of Rhodes.

Cheers,
Mark Butt.

Evening all,
Can anyone help?
I have been emailing Elani at the Alianthos Beach for a while now about arranging a deposit for 2009, and am getting no response at all. Does anyone know why?

Originally arranged a PayPal transfer but the wheels came off that big time, so am trying the older (and more expensive) bank transfer.

Butties.

How long have you been trying? As I've had very recent e-mails with her regarding a hire car over christmas & all was fine

Original attempt at paying via PayPal was about 40 days ago.
This was because although I asked if paying via PayPal would be Ok, before transferring the money, and the reply was yes, my money was refunded to me by PayPal after 30 days because the Alianthos did not follow through at their end, which I am still confused about.

Last weekend (2nd Nov) I emailed to ask if their was any confusion about what they had to do re PayPal transfers, and if easier I would revert to the tried and tested but more expensive bank transfer method - no reply. Tried again this Saturday and am waiting. Usually I get prompt replies so am a little confused.

Butties.

I e-mailed a couple of weeks ago but will try again tonight as I need to book a car, normally they come back to you within 24 hours, will let you know if I get a response.

Rowena

Hi

I had a reply from Eleni this morning to confirm our hire car so you should get through ok, are all the details correct you are sending too?

Rowena

Interesting...
Which email address are you using, I have two, <info@alianthos-group.com> which is the one I use and have up until now had no bother with, and <alianthosbeach@hotmail.com>.

I am not sure where I got the hotmail address from, maybe the Alianthos web site, but as I say I cannot remember. For all I know it is Elani's 'personal' address, at work if that makes any sense.

I will try the <info...> address at the weekend again.

I'd hazard a guess at Kambos (also known as Votsalakia).

Mike

Close, very close guys, the much smaller fishing village of Ormos Marathoukambos just around the headland eastwards from Kambos/ Votsalakia.
Like a smaller version of Plakias, I'll take a guess and say it was like Plakias probably was 20 or so years ago, i.e. not yet discovered!

Hello everyone, happy new year,
Been a while since I added a reply but I check out the site weekly.

After a couple of seasons away from Plakias we thought we would return; maybe see the old place before the 'possible / maybe' new development starts, as it still remains our favourite, although we 'found' a really nice 'Plakias-like' place in Samos, but that is another story for those who might want to know.

Like to go independent for various reasons and thought I had just about everything sussed, dates, flights and reservations wise, and then GB Airways goes and gets bought out by Easyjet, damn cheek!

Gatwick flights, first two weeks in June, went from £98 / £98 - out / inbound to 125 / 125 over night and are now 175 / 125 for same dates, near on £615 in total from £400, all in less than a week. Still going to go but I am looking at other flight options.

Is it me, naive and all, but is there something very odd / cheeky about Easyjet offering cheaper flights for those who do not have any hold luggage, Ok, if you live in Crete I suppose it works, but most people using these flights must surely be holidaying, or am I missing something?

Happy holidaying.

Plakias / Worrying Development

Hahaha, ROFL, Rofl......

Guess what, I mailed them for info and pricelist and this is what they state at the bottom of the pricelist:

'FOR EVERY BUYER 2 MOUNTAIN BIKES WILL BE OFFERED FREE OF GHARGE'

Wow! big deal, all the apartments will be sold real quick this way

Maybe the mountain bikes are to help with the airport transfer?
Really though, I know we should try to see what is best for the future of Plakias and its residents, but those artists impressions looked terrible, reminded me of several areas of Cyprus that I have seen 'developed', uniform, featureless seas of concrete.
And I'll be honest, I would be very sorry to see Plakias go down that route.

Gossip / How did you first find Plakias?
« on: August 05, 2007, 07:01:06 PM »
In 2000 from the roadside viewing point above town just outside of Sellia, thought "have to go there, it looks bloody marvalous".
It was our first foreign holiday as a family, my wife had practically told me she was going to go it alone if I did not pull my finger out and book a holiday in the sun. We ended up doing a week in Ayia Galini, total greek island virgins with a 15 and 12 year old in tow.
We hired a car for three days in the middle of the week and just drove, luck took us towards Plakias, total fluke. The week we got back to blighty I went into a travel agent and said "I want to go here, Plakias, how can I do it?" Ended up going with First Choice to CC's. Been three times now, with Corfu, Cyprus and Samos in between.

Gossip / medical treatment ?
« on: April 22, 2007, 08:13:12 PM »
Quote from: jann
Hi, I was just wondering if any one has any personal experiences regarding medical treatment whilst in Plakias ? or any information at all about doctors and the nearest hospital facilities?    Thanks Jann

Jann,
Three years ago while in resort at CC's my 18 year old daughter suffered a really nasty arterial nose bleed. My wife is a nurse and she could not stop the bleeding and knew we had a problem. We contacted the local doctor who practices out of the small chemists / medical centre just off the main drag using a contact number we had been given by the Olympic rep.
This has taught us the importance of knowing these things.

I think it was about 6 or 7 o'clock in the evening. He came out promptly but that may have been because he was actually at the centre at the time, not sure how long it would have taken if he had not been in resort. He diagnosed the problem, basically 'plugged' the leak and told us that we had to go immediately to the nearest hospital at Rethymno. Fortunately we always have a hire car and do a fair bit of driving around so this was no real problem, it took about 45 minutes including finding the hospital which was fairly straight forward.

The hospital staff were really good, even the locals who were waiting in what I imagine was the A and E department let us skip to the front of the queue as my daughter did look a bit of a mess. There did not seem to be any formal reception or taking of details and at first we did wander around trying to work out where we needed to go. Fortunately both the doctors who saw my daughter; a Greek and an Italian, spoke very good english.

They sorted the problem at no charge; they did not ask for E111s or anything, and refered us back to the local GP in resort for follow up treatmet. He however did charge us about £80 in total, for the visit I think and medication we had to buy. Never got any of that back from our insurance. Probably would have said no anyway as we did not offer our E111 or some such excuse, but at the time you are really thinking about sorting the problem and not the paperwork.

Hope this helps, anythink else please ask.

Where to go / Suggestions for Walks
« on: June 12, 2005, 12:46:52 PM »
Good day everyone,
I discovered a site the other day while hunting around for weather info, www.weatheronline.co.uk, some of you may know of it.
The weather info it puts out I found to be easily and well presented, but the interesting extra that I discovered was the way in which it links with other aspects of the locality you are interested in weather wise.
Each locality seems to have selected webcam links to local sites, around Plakias this is Chora Skafion and Loutro. If you clik onto to them you get local info including walks in these areas.
I thought it was very good.

Holiday Companies / Transfers
« on: May 07, 2005, 09:57:55 AM »
I can now say that we are going on holiday next month. Yipee! O.K., it might be the end of June but whose counting?  java script:emoticon(':D')
This year we have arranged to hire a car from Heraklion airport for the full two weeks, mainly to give us more roaming options but also because of the notorious Plakias 'Death by a thousand stops' transfer. We have done it several times now and we feel that we have almost seen as much of Crete; and everyone else's accommodation, from a coach window; as we have during our stays.

My question is for those of you out there who have done this before.
When, in your experience, is the best time to inform your holiday company that you do not need the transfer?
I am leaning towards when we arrive. Seek out the rep, find out room allocation, thank them for their assistance and then go our own way, as oppsed to informing the company before we go.
Thoughts, experiences of this please would be welcome.
We are going with Olympic for the first time after several years of First Choice.

One thing that we all have in common is that we like Plakias and therefore other similar resorts suitable for twenty to seventy plus somethings, with a good beach and tavernas, laid back Greek atmosphere, with excellent scenery and walks would fit the bill. Oh, and no lager louts.

Resorts that fit into this description that I know of are not on Crete. I have virtually decided to restrict myself to them (and Plakias of course) rather than look for somewhere new, risking disappointment (the last exception to this is my autumn 2004 holiday to Vassilikos, Zakynthos).

The list is (in no particular order), Petra (Lesvos), Scala (Kefalonia), Kambos (Samos), Tingaki (Kos), and Agios Georgious (also known as St. George South) (Corfu). But for the poor beaches I would include Haraki (Rhodes), Kalives (Crete) and Paralio Astros (Peloponnese). Matala (Crete) sounds good but I have never been there.

If anyone would like to know more I would be happy to help, but as this is a Plakias forum it might be more appropriate to contact me via my E-Mail address which I think will be displayed if you click on "Mike G".

I would add that I always (ever since the family has been grown up anyway) holiday in May and Sept/Oct so I cannot vouch that all of the places mentioned are quiet in high season (is Plakias?).
[a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=2106\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a]

Thank you all for the responses, there is no substitute for first hand experience. It will keep me busy. Interested to see Kambos ( Samos) on your list Mike as I have considered it as an option but like you say, the risk of holiday disappointment is always present if you have no first hand experience.

Thanks all, Butties, Mark.

Now I know that to some the very idea of staying anywhere other than Plakias may be considered grounds for expulsion, but....

Now that Butties minor have almost flown the nest the much loved one and myself may be in the decadent position of being able to have two holidays in 2005. Both are likely to be in Crete and one will be in Plakias, but we are also looking to try new pastures.

One place that has caught my eye as a potential starter is Myrtos near Lerapetra. The Rough Guide to Crete; a publication I have found never to be shy in coming forward, calls it a 'charming unexpected pleasure, kept as clean as a whistle by its proud residents', praise indeed.

Members of this forum have been going to Crete for a long time and have a wealth of experience of what we all know is a wonderful Island.
I wonder, is there anyone out there who has experiences of Myrtos, good or bad that they would be prepared to share?

Butties, Mark.
