Where to stay / Stella Studios
« on: September 08, 2008, 11:58:19 AM »
Can anyone who has stayed at Stella Studios let me know if they provide a kettle - sounds pathetic I know, but if they don't I want to take my travel kettle!  also, has anyone been there recently and had a transfer from the airport provided by Markos - if so, how much was it?  We booked to go there months ago and I anticipate the cost of the transfer might have increased considerably owing to the rise in petrol prices.  Any other info on staying here would be welcome - we are going in about a month's time.

Thanks, Mazey.

I'll have a dig around for some pictures this weekend, if I find any I'll put them up for you.

As Mazey said the harbour is nice, spent most evenings there and that 'Cave' place rings a bell, there was also a 'Captains... something at the end of the harbour, can't remember what is was. (S.D. looming).

If I remember correctly the harbour area was in another village, sounds odd but 'it' and Makri were within about 50 yards of each other?

George - have had another thought, the Cave place was I think called Dragon's Lair - or similar - or the Greek equivalent!

I have just booked a late deal for Makrigialos for end September , early October. I usually go in this month to Palaeochora but am becoming less enamoured with the place.

Has anyone been to this resort ? Will I , as a lone older traveller , enjoy it ?. Sadly  not a far-ender any more now I travel alone.

I always (bar once) go to Plakias early season and Palaeochora late season - but may start casting for pastures new.

Bearing in mind I am spending next January and February in Fuerteventura , you can see I do not set my sights too high !!!!

We spent our first holiday in Crete at Koutsouras, and visited Makrigialos whilst there.  We went back there in (I think) October 2005.  Spent a week in Myrtos, which is a lovely little place - if you like eating out - not much else goes on there.  Then drove to Makri - we like it there - around the harbour particularly, eating there one night we watched the local boys and one very feisty girl catching squid in the shallows - magic (needless to say didn't have camera with us!)  The resort was shutting down, so fairly quiet, but the weather was good - one wet night.  Went by bus to Sitia which again is a very pleasant, low key town.  Iareptera not particularly attractive, but worth a visit.  Yes, there is a very large hotel complex at the far end of the resort, but you can avoid this easily.  The sea there is lovely for bathing, and although the beach can be a bit stony, once in the sea it is sandy.  There is also a lovely restaurant further along the coast - can't remember the name but it means The Cave, I think, they have outside oven there.  This year will be our 5th visit to Crete, we much prefer the south of the island and are looking forward to Plakias for the first time.

Where to stay / Stella/Orama Studios
« on: March 25, 2008, 09:47:20 PM »
Thanks to everyone who replied to my query re accommodation/car hire.  I have now had an e mail reply from Stella Studios and will probably book that, as no one seems to have any info on Orama Studios, and Stella are cheaper anyway both for accommodation and taxi fare - also all reviews on the forum sound positive.  Looking forward to our holiday - even if it is nearly six months away -didn't visit Greece last year and am suffering withdrawal symptoms!  Went to Bali the previous September and got very wet!  Not quite au fait yet with how this site works - but I'll master it eventually I hope!

Where to stay / Plakias Virgins!
« on: March 23, 2008, 10:55:48 AM »
We hope to be spending a week in Plakias from 4 October this year.  It will be our fifth visit to Crete, but we have not been to this area before.  We plan to hire a car towards the end of the week and then drive to Pitsidia and spend a week there.  Looked at staying at Orama Studios as they look fairly central - we would like to have an easy walk to tavernas and shops - we both have our bus passes and my partner has an artificial leg, so long walks carrying shopping are out!  although we do like to walk a fair bit.   We also liked the look of the Olive Grove studios, but feel they may be a bit of a way out of the village.  Have e mailed Stella and Anna Studios, but so far had no reply.  Does anyone have any information on the Orama Studios - they seem to charge normal price (35 euros per night) but taxi pick up from Heraklion is 90 euros which sounds a bit steep.  Also, does anyone know if it will be feasible to hire car in Plakias and drive to Piitsidia and leave car there to be collected when we go back home - don't want to drive to Heraklion.  Any suggestions gratefully received!
