Please remember it's not necessary to take a taxi. The local bus service takes a bit longer but costs a lot less and is an enjoyable experience.

Regarding transfers, what's wrong with the bus? Cheap and reliable.
And as for luggage - it's a beach holiday! What is there to take other than a carry-on case?

Yes. Regrettably the wind can be so strong that you cannot use the beach. It doesn’t happen all the time and is unpredictable. However, you will enjoy all the other days very much and will forget those few days of very strong wind if you are unlucky and get them. I hope you have a fabulous time in Plakias. That’s why so many people keep returning there every year.

I too split my holidays between Paleorchora and Plakias and disagree with the two previous posts about Paleochora.
I'm not saying that one place is better than the other but in my opinion Paleochora town has a degree of traditional charm which Plakias does not. There are several very good places to eat and the town beach is a kilometre of beautiful sand, never overcrowded (if you're prepared to walk along a bit) and not scruffy like that at Plakias. I agree that there is more choice of nearby beaches at Plakias but I never want more than the town beach at Paleochora. There's no need for a car as there are really few places to go once you're there. Just take the bus from Chania and stay put.
We always take the ferry from Paleochora to Skafia and then a taxi to Plakias. The ferry voyage is magnificent.
I look forward to many more stays in both places as I love them equally.

Yes. Sorry - I know this is a forum for Plakias but I too like Paleochora very much. As previously stated, it appeals to the same types as does Plakias. There are fewer British and more Scandinavians.  The beach is lovely - far end is the same as Plakias - and the town has much more character than Plakias. It's easy to get to by local bus from Chania as long as flight times coincide reasonably. Plenty of accommodation available on Booking.com.
I usually do both on the same trip - 10 to 14 days in each - and take the ferry from Paleochora to Chora Skafion and then taxi to Plakias. The ferry trip is spectacular.
However, having been to both several times my partner and I just cannot state that we prefer one over the other. But I think our main attraction to Plakias is Amoudaki beach so if you don't use Amoudaki I think you may prefer Paleochora.

I visit Plakias (and Paleochora) every year and take the public bus services both ways every time. It's efficient, comfortable, reliable and cheap.

Ten days in Paleochora from 1st July, then the fabulous ferry trip to Skafia and on to 10 days in Plakias. Always stay in both because I can't decide which I like the best.

I've been to Plakias a dozen times over the past six years and never travelled with Olympic.

I always travel independently using easyJet, from Gatwick to either Chania or Heraklion, and the local buses to get to Plakias. It's easy but you need to choose your flight times to fit in with the buses. Many of the accommodations in Plakias are now available on Booking.com making the reservations very easy and, allegedly, at the best prices.

Hear! Hear!
I've always thought that it's the distance from the airports which means only dedicated Greco files can be bothered to travel to Plakias and other south coast towns. And, there's not enough potential on the south coast to warrant an airport (we hope).

Having said this I'm surprised just how many people do make the journey.

It's just as well tourists don't have to pass through Plakias to reach their accommodation on the north coast, like we travel along the north coast first. Just think of all those people thinking "Oh, I wish we were staying here" instead of "Thank God we're going on to Plakias and not staying here!!".

His name is Apostolis. This was his third season.
Not only does he keep the beach immaculate (note the planting around the showers) he is a thoroughly charming man.
The beach has improved 1000%.
I hope Apostolis keeps the concession next year.

It was because it was August. There are a lot of Greeks and they tend not to strip off. Go in September and you'll notice things back to normal.
