Where to stay / Alianthos Beach Hotel
« on: May 25, 2005, 09:04:42 AM »
Just in case anyone is interested.
The beach hotel was the first of the two Alianthoses, and the Vardakis family where like parents to me when I got there first in 1975. Joseph and Manoli and their wifes ran it. They actually started up as tomato growers on that property, growing hot house tomatoes for the early markets.
I saw the new Alianthos first in 1987, Manoli ran it, while Joseph stayed in the beach hotel.
They definetely had a goldmine.
Just a bit of useless trivia.

Plakias / Plakias in the 80s

This is all very profound. It was predictable that development occured, we could already see it in 1977, when similar thoughts were discussed in the tavernas. However, you could not convince the old greeks who carted everything from pumpkins to toilet bowls on donkeys and who's children did not get a proper education.
Apart from developers, a lot of ordinary Greeks have benefitted from the change, which was I guess caused by us. We came from industrial countries to the romance and beauty of a country, which was quite behind. We enjoyed the lack of development, because it looked nice, felt nice and was cheap. When I came to Greece from Germany, my money tripled, and I could live well.
However, the Greeks worked their guts out, which was not fair either. Despite all this, they were the most generous, humble, helpful and honest people imaginable.
As long as they kept these qualities things should still be good in Crete.

Plakias / tsunami

As far as I know, the Minoan culture was wiped out by a tsunami, after San Turini exploded. Just have a look at Knossos.

Plakias / Plakias in the 80s
« on: November 22, 2004, 08:11:17 AM »
PS: I think there is a lot of " Plakias Newbies" on this forum, (some may not think so); may be we are just old farts or shall I say veterans. I have tried before to catch up with some of the oldies, one (canadian) guy replied. He was there even before my first time (1975). Since the Junta fell in 1974, you would not get too many tourist before that period. Are you Greek ?

Gossip / Poll about the new buildings by the sea
« on: November 08, 2004, 08:29:09 AM »
Believe me, the character of the place has already changed heaps since 1975, and from all of your reports it sounds as if it is still paradise. So I don't think those buildings will make much difference.
In 1975 you walked everywhere, there was no big resort, you could not change money or buy milk, all the food was basic Kretian, ie plane and oily :'( , there was no Hanimag, in fact no umbrellas or any development on the little Damnoni beaches  , you could sleep on the beach  , we were a novelty, there was no bitumen road except the one to Mirthios, people rode their donkeys (and the wives walked behind and caried everything (pure gentlemen))  ,  main tourists were poor, shoestring travelling backpackers, no organised tourism, the doughnut man was still a fisherman, the greeks spoke hardly English, most beaches were nude (although illegally), the wind was just the same, the rock in little amoudi was still standing up see photo,   crowds came only in July/August, non Kretians could not buy land or houses, the sea was clean and pure, there were lots of fish, people dumped their rubish anywhere, standards drinks was ouzo, (2 drachmas ( 1 pound was 48 drachmas), recina (12 dr), raki 2dr, beer (Amstel) 18 dr, beautiful cool water from the mountains free, Room rent was 100 dr, a greek salad was 12 dr, beautiful chips fried in olive oil 6 dr.
So, if its still nice, it is probably because we have changed and its topography is absolutely stunning and the people are still hospitible and very friendly.
So I hate to say, but I vote for 'Don't care'.

Where to go / Other resorts
« on: August 25, 2004, 08:29:25 AM »
Hi Fraoula
Yes I have, once again last in 1978. At that time, there was no power in Gavdos, certainly an experience. Warm beer only. It was a very beautiful island, we walked across it, which did not take long.
I think we took a little boat from chora sphakion. Met a swiss couple who had lived  there for months in a mud-building.
Nice time, but it was also great to come back to fridges and cool beer. Very friendly Greek people lived there.
As far as I remember, there were some nice beaches and good snorkeling.
It would be interesting to see it now. If you go there, let me know what it's like now.

Where to go / Other resorts
« on: August 20, 2004, 06:56:12 AM »
Hi Mike,
I can't tell you that. I went to Karpathos in 1978 on the way back from Turkey to Krete. The ferry used to go from Agia Nicholaos  via a little island (tiny, which I don't know the name off, but would be worthwhile checking out) to Karpathos,  on to Rhodes. From Rhodes there is a ferry to Marmeris in Turkey. I would not think that Karpathos has an international airport. It's very hilly, imagine it would be hard to fit one. I imagine there would be small planes and ferries from Athens as well. I just googled and there seems to be plenty of information in Google.
Hope that helps, but do go, its a beautiful island.

I found Karpathos an interesting island. That was a while ago so. Beautifully green, ideal for hiking.

Hopper, any chance you can reduce the filesize of your picture as it is 617.85k  I think that may be the problem why a some are having difficult seeing your photo

John, I have send you photos through your business email, as this forum does not seem to leave room for attachments.
