We have made the trip to Paleohora many times, both from Plakias and also direct from Heraklion airport.  From Heraklion airport to Paleohora takes us exactly 3 hours (broken down it is an hour from the airport to Rethymno, and hour from Rethymno to the Paleohora turn off at Tavronitis and a further hour from there down into Paleohora.  From Plakias the drive is about two and a half hours, but I agree that the ferry is more enjoyable, particularly if you can break the journey at Loutro.  The last ferry into Paleohora arrives there at 6pm, in comfortable time to find a room (plenty and reasonably priced), grab a shower and enjoy your evening volta before your evening meal.

We arrived back last night as well, but from Heraklion.  We were delayed 2 hours and got the same reason as you Mike.  But I must say this is our first delay with Excel.
However your story about the evacuation chute brought back memories.
Several years ago a similar thing happened to us.  After everything was set for take-off a crew member open a door which apparently wasn't shut properly, and of course the evacuation chute immediately deployed.  As the aircraft don't carry spares a new one had to brought  from Gatwick to be fitted before we could take off.  Problem was we were in Turkey - 19 hours delay!!  (Not Excel I have to say!)

Hi Rowena and Carl,

We have travelled to Crete with Excel twice and will be flying with them again in September.  We found them to be EXCELlent.  All of our flights have taken off bang on time and usually arrived early (coming home last year we landed about 45 mins early).  The planes have been spotlessly clean, they seem to have quite a bit more leg room, cabin crews have been very friendly and helpful, check in very quick and efficient, in fact we have nothing but praise for Excel.  We booked in January this year, and paid £375 for two adults, including all taxes, meals etc.  I haven't seen the fares quite that low since then.  All in all, I would recommend them - however - I know that others have had bad experiences with Excel, so this is just my opinion.

Where to stay / Hotels In Plakias

We stayed at the Alianthos Beach Hotel every year from 1996 to 2004 (didn't make it to Plakias last year!). and we like it!
The first two years we travelled with First Choice and the rooms we had were at the back of the hotel looking up the alley towards what was then the Crazy Dolphin.  Subsequent years we travelled independently, booking direct with the Alianthos, and from then on we got a room at the front overlooking the beach.  We found all the staff to be very helpful and very friendly, in fact going back year after year, you get to be treated more like old friends.  The rooms fairly standard and are cleaned every day, towels are changed every day and bed linen every couple of days.  The rooms have a fridge and TV (for those who can't live without) but not much in the way of English speaking channels.

Where to stay / Alianthos Beach Hotel

We have been staying there every year since 1996.  The first couple of years we travelled with First Choice and were given a room at the back of the hotel looking up the lane towards what was then the Crazy Dolphin.  We then started travelling independently and booking direct with the Alianthos, booking a car with them also.  The room we have had ever since has been number 110, first floor, corner room on the Kyma side overlooking the sea.  The rooms are fairly basic but clean and fresh with fridge and TV.  We are always greeted like long lost friends, first (several) drinks on the house, and made to feel very welcome.  Service is great without being 'in your face'!  The hotel is in an ideal position for both beach and tavernas/bars.

At a relatively active 56 and 60, we walked the Imbros gorge last year.  It is relatively easy compared to the Samaria and from memory it was about 2 hours.  Be warned, we hired a "taxi" from a taverna at the bottom, to get to Imbros village.  The taxi comprised a very beat up pickup with rough iron benches in the rear and a maniac in the driving seat, not to be recommended, but there are others offering the service, and of course local buses.  The walk through the gorge is well worth doing, many features are similar to the Samaria, just scaled down a bit, but still very impressive.
