Plakias / Re: Far End
« on: September 23, 2016, 09:20:56 PM »
Many of these "reserved" sun loungers are "booked" by consortia of people (usually with hire cars) who put towels for many couples in a single visit. Then, as you say, "booked" people don't turn up for hours later! I dislike this selfish practice so much that I am reluctant to visit Plakias again (having been a regular visit in the past. I would certainly support a "chuck-em off by 10.00 or 1030 policy!

I remember the Dolphin! In my youth (when I was even more easily led) they would often persuade my wife and I to "just have another drink" before going home. I have never managed to locate where it was! Perhaps due to the effect of overindulgence (back then, not now)!

I can confirm that it is in Athens and is quite popular. It is almost as slow as it seemed to be in Plakias but the hills are not quite so bad!

Plakias / Re: Samaria Gorge the Hard Way !

Hi.....could someone in Plakias....or someone who's going out soon....let me know if the Samaria the Hard Way (the long walk from top to bottom) excursion is being run this year and, if so, how much and which day ? Have been challenged to do this to celebrate my 50th birthday and there could be some sponsorship for my local food association riding on it ! Many thanks.

As far as I can recalled walking from the bottom to the top is the HARD way!

I hate people who book sunbeds with towels and then don't bother to turn up. Other than that I like most things about Plakias!

PlakChat / Re: Summer winds in Plakias
« on: October 22, 2012, 08:10:05 AM »
I know this is probably an old topic, but I was in Plakias a few years ago, in June, and I have never seen a sustained wind like this! (2 days, and we finally gave up).  Was I unlucky, or, is this a common weather issue here?

I wonder if it is a product of climate change. We were in Naxos for a fortnight in June and a fortnight in September and it was very windy on both occasions - much windier than normal!

Where to eat...or not! / Re: Fix
« on: September 21, 2012, 09:50:07 PM »
Not sure if Fix has been mentioned before but I am sure the hardened drinkers in the forum will know all about it. It is a Greek 5% Premium Lager Beer introduced in 1864 but this is the first year we have noticed it. Here in Sougia & earlier in Paleochora. Like Mythos it goes down well after a hot day on the beach. I believe it went out of production many years ago but is now making a come back.
Stuart

I am not entirely sure but we used to drink Fix when we first went to Greece in 1978. I think it was brewed in Athens but a few years later went bust. After a while it was subject to a management buy-out but after a few years went bust again. After a while it was subject to a worker's buy-out but then yet again went bust. It disappeared but has in the last few years re-immerged! It's quite nice!  Roger

Re: Sun Beds

"Sorry, Noopsy. As others have already said, the far end is far from family friendly unless you like naked fellow holidaymakers, young and old, on the beach next to you. As for extending it for the latter, that hardly makes any sense. I'd be very surprised if "normal" visitors to Plakias don't bring more income to the village than the unclothed ones."

Sorry, this is simply RUBBISH! You have NO evidence as to the breakdown of income that Plakias derives from either clothed or unclothed customers!

There are simply acres of beach for clothed customers with a small amount of area set aside for the unclothed. My wife & I have been going to Plakias since around 1980 and this has always been the case. The "far end" should not be described as "the best part of the beach" - it ain't!

There are simply millions of beaches for the clothed in Greece but a vanishingly small number of options for the unclothed.

If you and "Sunny Jim" don't like it - go SOMEWHERE ELSE - there are many options available.

However, I can't get over the feeling that by sending this message, I am in fact FEEDING THE TROLLS!

We have been to Plakias over many (>30 years) but are unlikely to go again due to the new attitude to facilities on the far-end!

Forum and Website discussion / Re: cash in plakias
« on: July 25, 2012, 04:21:54 PM »
Hi, we were in Plakias three years ago and then there were no shortage of ATMs, I imagine this is still the case. So, simply draw cash from the ATM and pay for stuff with euros. However, be aware that most (all?) Greek ATMs restrict you to withdrawing no more than 300 euros a day so you might need to get your cash out by multiple daily visits.

Have a nice holiday!

Where to go / Re: The Pelion - katigiorgis
« on: July 22, 2012, 08:52:36 PM »
Does katigiorgis have a nudist beach like the far in Plakias? Can you avoid the irritating tendency to "bags" a sun bed by putting towels out hours and hours before people intend to arrive?

It should have closed 25 years ago - one of the worst airports in Europe!

PlakChat / Re: Greece's financial plight
« on: February 22, 2012, 07:53:25 PM »
I do not know what the answer is, but it seems the single currency is not it.

It never was, it's difficult enough to set financial parameters on sterling in a small country like the UK - London, rural Wales, Tyneside, Belfast are so disparate that no exchange rate suits all! The divergence between Berlin and Plakias is even more vast - making it impossible. Why the Greeks wanted to join the Euro is mysterious but even more strange, why did Germany & France want them in (especially enough to assist them in colluding to fudge the entry criteria)!
