Where to eat...or not! / It's tradition

Just goes to show the different experiences people can have in the same village.  Over our six nights in Plakias, we found the following:

Tuesday - Mouses - good food, good value, good service
Wednesday - Harakas - OK food, good value, OK service
Thursday - Lysseos - great food, good value, great service
Friday - Lysseos - so impressed, we went again
Saturday - Kri Kri - OK food, OK value, good service
Sunday - Sofias - poor food, OK value, OK service

We also liked Paligremnos for lunchtimes, and the Livicon Hotel bar/cafe for after dinner drinks.

PlakChat / Who Speaks Greek ?

I agree with you, Karen.

We found it quite a struggle in the first 18 months or so, even though we were living there fulltime, so I can see how difficult it can be trying to pick the phrases up again if you only get one or two weeks a year to have a go.

The way I looked at it was that, if a foreign tourist came to the UK, there was little chance of them finding someone who spoke their mother tongue, so they were forced to try English and it would be only the most ignorant/stupid salesperson who would make fun of their efforts.  It is the same in Greece - they might smile at some of the accents or mispronunciations, but they are genuinely pleased that some of us do make the attempt.

Plakias / WHERE ARE THEY???

I am very worried that nothing has been heard of from Compage, Ostraco et al since the fateful meal on Friday evening.  

What can have happened to them all - Is it true that white slave traders have begun operating from Ali and Dave's supermarket, or did Mrs Medousa put too many onions in the stifado?  

I have visions of turning up on Tuesday lunchtime and finding dozens of empty rooms and crates of unopened Amstel.  Oh well, all the more for me, I suppose.  

Anyway - we are packed (hand luggage only, I'm afraid, so apologies in advance if we begin to smell by the 6th day) and can't wait until the 06:05 flight from Gatwick on Tuesday.  It is with the airline Astreus, which I have never heard of before, so I'll be able to post a review of them when we get back.  Hopefully, it will be a favourable one.

If anyone else is on that flight, I wish you a Kalo Taxidi.

Plakias / Crowded Plakias?

It is now 9:40pm Plakias time and I hope you are all having a great time.    

I definately feel jealous that you couldn't wait 4 more days to have your get together - that is when we arrive.

Mind you - there is always the chance that you will have a hangover in the morning while I am at work - lol.

Hopefully, you'll have left a couple of bottles of Amstel with the caps on for the rest of us.

Plakias / car hire

Hi Haze
We always hire our car from the people below and have always found them very reasonable.  We would prefer to give our custom to the local offices but have never found anyone who comes close to their prices.  Also it means we can pick up and drop off the car at the airport which means we either avoid the dreaded transfer coaches or it saves us the cost of taxis to and from.  

If you register as a member with them you qualify for a discount. This year we are renting a smallish 5 door hatchback for £137.  Hope this helps.

Plakias / Cheap Flights

Pritch, do you mean you found flights for £235.00 each for 4 people or was it £235 for all of you?  

Unless you have the nerves to make yourself wait for the very last minute deals, the cheapest company I have found so far is with Cheapestflights.co.uk.  We have just booked 2 tickets for 9 September (Gatwick to Heraklion) for £145 each.
We used the same company for a week's car hire (£137) and insurance (£26.00).

I have used them before for trips to Lesbos and to Costa Blanca with no problems, so I am quite happy to recommend them.

The only thing you have to make sure of is to register yourself on their website.  That way you qualify for the member rates.  They do not bombard you with information, nor do they seem to pass your details on to other companies, which can often be a nuisance.  (My God, I must stop this - I am beginning to sound like an advert for them!)

Anyway, however you get there, let's all have a great time.

Where to stay / Villa Ioanna

Well, I didn't get any replies to my posting, so we decided to trust the old saying that "no news is good news" and have booked studios at the Villa Ioanna.  

I must say that when I e-mailed my booking request, the owner, Marko, replied very quickly and was able to answer all my questions.  Let's hope that is a good omen for our stay.  The problem is, until you have found out what a place is like for yourself, it is always a bit of a worry deciding on where to stay.  After all, we only get one or two weeks abroad each year and it seems like a tragedy if something goes wrong.

Anyway, we are due to arrive about 2pm-ish on 9th September.  After all the good things I have read about Plakias on this and other sites, I can't wait!  

Over the past couple of years, we have tried to break ourselves of our addiction to Greece and have tried taking holidays in UK, Ireland and Spain.  All of them turned out to be a pale imitation of the real thing, so Greece it is again!!!

I would still be interested in hearing your views on Villa Ioanna, good or bad.

Where to stay / Villa Ioanna

I have seen details about the Villa Ioanna apartments on the Interkriti website.  From what I can make out, it looks fine, with the usual self catering facilities - fairly basic, but then again, what do you need for a week or so?

It says that it is located "on the main street, between the wonderful beaches of Plakias and Damnoni", approximately 5 minutes walk from the town centre.  

I have never been to Plakias yet, so I would like to ask if anyone has stayed there?  If so, what did you think of it?  Is it really 5 minutes walk from the town or is that only if you are an Olympic athlete?  How far is it to the sandy part of the beach?  In fact, anything you cab think of that I need to know!
