Plakias / Re: Observered imbalance

I last visited in 2017 June 10th for a week and thought there were more German people and of an older age group than the year before at the end of June. I go on Tuesday 11th June so will keep an ear out for the voices...Ya.

It looks like I am jumping on someone else's forum post here but hopefully all this is good for those that need to drive to Plakias now (re./e.g. Olympic no longer offering those transfers).
Interesting point on the transfer option, which would be good if dark, however I have booked a day flight from a local airport (a little more expensive than usual). So, I can drive from the airport but require 10 days hire whilst having nine nights stay due to flight times (I also get nine full days on holiday too). The extra day's car hire is probably cheaper than the one way transfer so I feel it is best to have the car for the arrival and enjoy the afternoon drive (personal choice but will be an experience).
I also note on the website (Moto Auto Plakias S.A.) that there is no option to contact them by email, or are they updating the site at present...I wonder?

Moto Plakias has a website but only a telephone number. I need to choose and arrange something to collect at the airport. With all the details showing first.

Thanks for the reply, I am going to look at Moto Plakias, and I presume from the comments that they offer the full insurance to cover glass and tyres, mirrors without excess to pay.

Person Accident Insurance
Full Insurance (C.D.W.) no excess
Theft-Fire insurance with no excess
Insurance for tyres, underside of car, for glasses & mirrors with no excess

So I guess it does, the price for a small car is E238 for 10 days.

I have heard bad reports about them too if I recall.
When you say fully insured Yvonne, do you mean you still pay nothing even if you say clip the wing mirror or something minor?

Hi all, I am also looking to hire a car from the airport and drop off there, 10 days hire next week from 11th June. I have looked at a few of the suggestions and also Goldcar via Jet2 after booking my flight.
Auto Holidays had a price of E220 which is E22 per day which seems fair however I can't work out which insurance is included and what is not and whether I need the extra insurance which I believe covers the excess.

Monza had a price of E148 and included:
Theft and Fire Protection ( T.P.).
Personal Accident Insurance ( P.A.I.).
Third Party Insurance ( T.P.I. ) as per international insurance policy.
Collision Damage Waiver ( C.D.W.)

So I wonder whether I need an extra policy as is a lot lower than Auto Holidays price.

Goldcar gave a price of £102 plus £68 for a full policy which all also seems reasonable but still not sure what is covered.

Does anyone have a simple idea on what is needed and what is to be avoided, as I don't want any nasty charges.
I last hired a car in Kos and the price was E26 per day all in but I believe that it still had an excess of £300 for damage.

On return (sunny weather every day for a week):
Taxis were E6 each way to either bays on each side of Plakias. They were quite prompt and were always organised by the tavernas that I was sat at.

I also noted jet skis in the bays on two days. And, there were electric bikes for hire but at a highish hire price of E28 per day. I would suggest making the price around E12 per day to make the bikes worth bothering with (but then again I am from Yorkshire hehe).

Holiday Companies / Re: Olympic rep saga

"Overall a good week with lots of our German neighbours present and not so many British".
I am wondering why so few British. Brexit/Price - or is it simply cos Olympic aren't doing transfers to Plakias (et al) from anywhere except for Gatwick and Manchester.
Shot themselves in the foot there! (at least from my perspective). Oh well - there's always next year I suppose. Fingers crossed.
(Hi Arnaki!!)

Agree on the transfers, though our return transfer was certainly full of adventure. The coach driver got stuck down a tiny street in Rethymnon and only just got out of, and then had to boot it back to the airport. I think he received some complaints as there were less than 2 hours left before take-off.

There has to be something to be said for hiring a car from the airport and saving on the transfer. The South of the Island has so much to offer and personal transport would be helpful. Maybe that is the way it will be for most who want to get to the South with the package companies/Olympic?

Just returned on early Saturday morning (the washing has been done and the routine is slowly getting back to normal).

Yes, Elspeth was the rep and very pleasant she was, and very helpful too.

The weather was sunny every day except one partly beckoning cloudy day, though I only felt a few specks of a shower and stayed on the beach. The next day had a few light wispy clouds but nothing serious. Water still a bit cool though warming up by the end of the week. Overall a good week with lots of our German neighbours present and not so many British.

Stopped at Kostas and Chrysoulla, both Kostas and Angelo there as normal. Food great at some places though had a few dry dishes from the so-called specials board at some other places. Probably on the specials board because it was all pre-cooked (e.g. Pastitsio/and Gyros).

Agreed, the taxis will be the best option for transport to the surrounding bays, but further afield really requires a hire car (I may do that for one day for an outing).

Quad bikes, yes noisy at times if they hang about, but I would say that they are ideal for the rough tracks in the area. It is up to the person renting to consider full insurance. I'm not even sure whether the hire companies offer the full insurance, but I am aware that the usual personal holiday insurance doesn't cover any accidents and such like.

Maybe the bicycles with a little battery motor might suffice for the surrounding hills (I haven't seen those for rent)?

So, who is the Olympic rep for 2017, is it still Elspeth or has she moved on and a new replacement in place now? I was in Plakias last June/July and Dom was there while handing over to his replacement. I now understand his replacement has moved on and was replaced by Elspeth (or did Dom return for a while)? Who is there now, as I go in four weeks time (yippee)!

Thank you for the information kind people.....
Another reason for getting the taxis to nearby areas is that the resort does not offer competitive rates on mopeds/scooters and there are no quads available. I think a quad would be ideal for getting to the nearby beaches and the rough tracks around. Last year a rental company said that the cliff side roads were too dangerous for quads. I would have thought that a quad on four wheels would be the perfect solution (as they are in other rural/rustic resorts on the Greek Islands). One thing for sure is that the taxis will probably be the safest form of transport!

Last year, if I recall I think the rep said it was around E5 to Souda Bay one way. Which if is the case then I think it is quite reasonable. And, again will stop me dehydrating to the point of near collapse on the bike returning from the two surrounding bays.
