Well that was fun
So the forum is back after someone had their fun. Luckily no real damage was done and it has got me to upgrade to the latest version of the forum which fixed a lot of security holes.
Sorry that you all received an e-mail from the hacker, I was spared that because he had already deleted me from the forum
As a result my account wont be quite right yet, i.e associated posts, counts etc.
Because we have gone to a new version of the forum there are some differences.
First off we have lost the Statistics, Member Map, Who Was Online & Board Panel (that little welcome thing that used to be at the top of the screen).
Will work on getting these (or equivalents) back again.
When you make your first post you will see some differences. Nothing too drastic, should be pretty intuitive.
If you have any questions, just let me know.
Cheers,
Paul

Dear Paul
Can't thank you enough for all the work you had to do. You are immensly appreciated.

Well done Ploppy. You're a treasure.

Nice one Paul. Some people want to get a life! All the regulars appreciate all you do to keep the thing running.
Even though my E-Mail address is listed under "My Controls" I didn't receive a message so it sounds as if they were selective.

I'll second that nice work Ploppy

Thanks guys
The FAQ/Review section has gone as well, was a bit limited anyway.
Have to see what else I can do (I still have the info you entered so can incorporate that into a new wotsit)

mmm smart new board!!
just a thought but it might be easier just to have seperate reviews section rather than trying to recreate the old (limited as you said) version

Yeah I noticed that, if there is more than one entry for a day then they are grouped. Not sure that there is a lot that can be done about it right now

Just like to add my thanks and appreciation for getting it all going again.
I'm only a sporadic visitor, but was seething when I found out what some small-minded ****er had done to it, after being alerted by the e-mail.
Tried to track back on some of the delivery info in the raw e-mail but got nowhere, let's just hope their games backfire on them soon.
The phrase in the e-mail was:
"The forum involved studies T_T which i HATE"
Any idea what on earth that means?
Can't think of much on this forum that anyone would hate.
Reckon they're just upset 'cos they've never been to Plakias

Well done, Ploppy, very impressed with speed.

Hi Roland,
I don't think it was a personal attack, more likely some script judging by the number of requests being fired at our webserver by this guys IP address.
I could follow up on the IPs but I don't know how far it would get us.
Yes I saw the message, who knows what that meant.
Just some script kiddy with too much time on his hands but at least he wasn't as malicious as to trash the database.
Cheers,
Paul

Hi Roland!
I looked up "T_T" in Wikipedia and found out that it's a horizontal smiley representing crying eyes.
My guess would be that the script that this little @$$ wrote (or, more likely, copied from someone else) checks the forum's keywords first and hacks every vulnerable forum with keyword "studies" (and maybe some others, like e.g. "science" or "mathematics").
I have to admit that I haven't been lurking in the forum much in recent times. I only found out how important it's become for me when I found out that it had been hacked. I almost went mad!
Ploppy, thanks a lot for all the effort you put into this forum. This recent annoying attack didn't make it easier for you. You really give a lot to the commuity. I want you to know that I really appreciate it and if I'm ever at Plakias when you're there, I'd love to show my thankfulness in the form of some nice cool Mythoses.

No problem Andy.
How well that Mythos would go down now. This room is like a furnace 3 computers don't help!

Ploppy,
I have visited the forum once or twice recently, and wondered what had brought on all the recent changes/improvements. Today I looked into my "Bulk" file in my personal e-mail account for the first time in several weeks, and now I understand why...
Considering all the hard work you put into running this forum, I was incensed at what had happened. I admire your efforts at meeting this latest challenge, and a Mythos is on me should we happen to be in Plakias at the same time.

September must be very different from May, John, when for 2 evenings we were the only ones sat outside at the Medousa. Even the Harribobs were inside (maybe northerners are less hardy than southerners).
Before anyone thinks this might be a reflection on the Medousa food or hospitality, both were very good indeed (recommend the spaghetti carbonara- not very Greek I know!)

arff!
us northeners are smart enough to know where it's more comfy!

We ALWAYS sit outside - if necessary towards the end (Mid October) in fleeces and anoraks. It has been known for Babis to raise his eyebrows at us in mock disgust in these conditions (rare as it is usually warm enough for everybody to be outside) September is HOT and always too warm to eat inside. Towards mid October it sometimes gets a little chilly in the evening when a few people go inside. So yes I suspect Sept/Oct must be warmer than May - at least early May.
Er - we are very much Northerners

John,
I've never been able to form a definitive opinion of this in spite of having been in Greece at these time every year since 1995. (i.e. during first 3 weeks of May and period Sept 20- Oct 16 and from Kefalonia on the one hand to Rhodes on the other and also Lesvos to Crete). The only thing you can be sure of is that the evenings are lighter in May and the sea is warmer later. Sunburn risk is much lower late in the season. Otherwise air temperatures (day/evening) are quite similar, as is the chance of rain.
For some reason I've not fathomed, the last two weeks of the season are usually more expensive than the first two.
Both times are very pleasant to be in Greece in my humble opinion.

The last 2 weeks of the season are more expensive due to lack of space on return flights to the UK as the holiday companies are sending all there resort staff back during this time & all the other people returning from the whole summer ( lucky people )
