Hi all,
We've been to Plakias a number of times - pre and post euro (last back in 2001 on 9/11 - will never forget watching the towers go down in Costas' pool bar hours before we had to fly ourselves).
We're looking to join John, Steve, Greg and Loz out there in August and had hoped to spend little more than £250 each on flight and accom (self-cat).
I've no idea if this is realistic or how it could be done as the cheapest package came to about £378 at the moment - most over the £400 mark (for a week!).
Aside from waiting until the last minute I don't know what we could do to get a better deal.
Any tips, recommendations or insider info would be most appreciated via post reply or via email.
Best regards
Jon and Andrea

Hello Jon and Andrea,
I wish you well in your search but have to tell you we paid slightly more than this in mid May this year (2 weeks with Olympic at Kostas Chrysoulla, with all the early booking discounts) and August, as you say, is much more expensive. Also, I don't think Plakias often features in the last minute bargains (these are mainly 7 day holidays anyway).
The good news is that there is a wealth of Plakias experience on this forum and if it is possible someone is bound to tell you how. Also, you could live really cheaply if you had to there- check out the taverna reviews by clicking on Reviews/FAQ and then "tavernas" in the top right hand side of this page.
There is a Youth Hostel in the town. Maybe this in conjunction with a cheap flight. BA now fly to Heraklion.
Hope you manage it.

Forget the freebies now - just had an email from BA. It says "The operating carrier name has changed from British Airways operated by GB Airways to BA Connect operated by GB Airways. The class of service has changed from Euro Traveller to Economy."
and
"Food and drink available for purchase on board"

I usually fly with xl and stop at the hostel, can usually get a good deal with xl if your flexible on when you want to go (i just got a return for £150) and costs the same for 1 or 2 weeks and the hostel is €8 a night (£35ish for a week). Oh yeah and the current discount code for xl is MOD to get £10 off. Just got to worry about transfer then (around €80 in taxi or about €10 on the bus)

Our BA flight is slightly cheaper than that. One advantage is that they fly on Tuesdays and Fridays and you book the single flights in both directions on either day any week. So you can stay for as long or as short as you want. No restrictions to "just two weeks". We chose 17 days - Tuesday to Friday. I think next time we'll go Friday to Tuesday - 18 days.
