Title: GMaps - pedometer
Post by: Graham_and_Karen on May 29, 2006, 05:44:38 PM
Gmaps - pedometer (http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/)
A really useful tool for finding out whether that long walk you went on really was as far as you thought.    I now know that it is just under 1.56km from Costas Chrysoullis to our favourite spot under the trees at the far end of the beach. You have to switch to satellite view for Crete but the imagery is good enough to recognise most places.

Hi Graham and Karen

My son bought me an eTrex as a present and this is invaluable for tracking how far you have walked and the bearing and distance to your startpoint.  It can also give your height above mean sea level though I suspect this is not completely accurate because the height varies by 10 feet or so when walking along a level beach!  I use it not only for walking but also when flying from the Vale of Neath Gliding Club because it gives me the bearing back to the launch site if it is out of sight.  Get your kids to buy you one!

Regards,

Allan

Chris,

Re. http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/ (http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/), I've worked out how to get it to measure the distance in a straight line but how do you get it to measure a distance on a route when it isn't a straight line, as most aren't.

I just ran the pedometer on a route I walk every day. I have always maintained that the distance is 0.7 Km, but it turned out to be 1.4 Km

I better not tell my friends about that web site
