Just saw this link on the Sfakia message board : ( you can almost see yourself lying at the beach)

Just checked Google Earth and resolution now much improved! In fact it is now good enough to check out the paths on some of Lance Chilton's walks "on the ground".

if you enter my postcode, you see my car parked out side my house!
but the pics are a couple of years old

i've been messing around this morning ( the cats away) i can't seem to get a full screen version of the Crete pics running but I should be able to photo merge several screenshots together to give an overall photographic map of the town.
we could then index it .....

i've been playing around and got a good tip from the sfakia site, make sure that the Terrain box is NOT ticked
also i've noticed that google earth really only focuses on the central part of the image
here's the paligremnos taken from 650 foot, centralised
(http://harribobs.smugmug.com/photos/67651727-M.jpg)
and then off centre

Maybe someone with cartographical talents could use the satellite image to draw a map of the whole village with places that are of interest to us highlited thereon.

I hate to throw a wet blanket over the enthusiasm for a nice idea but...
Google or DigitalGlobe may well have something to say about using their copyrighted material.
After all, their copyright statements are clearly visible on some of the pictures above.
My advice would be to remove these pictures before someone snitches on us.
-
I must admit i'm not too sure about the legal aspect of it. The Google terms of use seem geared towards stopping people using it for commercial gain.
However its states: 'You may not copy, reverse engineer, decompile, disassemble, translate, modify or make derivative works of the imagery, in whole or in part. You also may not rent, disclose, publish, sell, assign, lease, sublicense, market, or transfer the imagery or any part thereof or use it in any manner not expressly authorized by this agreement.'
So who knows? Anybody better at the small print? The Google terms of use can be found Here. (http://www.google.com/intl/en_ALL/help/terms_local.html)

commercial gain?
good lord we're doing their advertising for them

Totally agree Chris, I don't see any harm in asking them, as long as you tell them exactly what you intend doing with it.
If you don't ask you don't get (I've said that before somewhere!)

well i don't think there's a problem with google but if no ones interested in doing the map i'll remove the links

I'm interested!!! Let's go for it

Might be a nice work to shorten some dark and cold winter-evenings... If no one worse than me would like to try I`ll do it oil on canvas.
Seriously: With the right collection of pictures from the "eye in the sky" I could make a trial with photoshop or Freehand... I own no explicit geographical graphic programmes... Any advices? But as I said: not before the autumn-winter season...
Cpyrights should be respected, but I think it should be no problem to use their photos for a non-commercial projekt. They never asked me either if I give them permission to take pictures of me lying on the beach... Big Brother is watching you... I'm sure they have some better pics of us all telling the book you hold in your hands...
btw.: anyone here with connections to the cretan art-scene? We [ a group of several Crete 'n' brushrubbish-maniacs] are very keen on an exhibition at the museum of contemparary arts in Rethymno... Wanna buy " Extravitamina" [Price: 800 Doughnuts...]?"

aaahh so we finally see the avatar in its full glory, they are very good, i think Micro Amoudi II is my favourite though.
re other artists, i think i have the contact details for the german guy who used to have the art shop in Matala, but i'd have to dig around for it later ( Rauschman???)
good idea about converting the google image, i'll have a play and see what i come up with, if want a go as well, you can get a full copy from here My smugmug page (http://harribobs.smugmug.com/gallery/1205822/1/69141558/Original)
30th June eh?

Thank you for your friendly comments... ...
I grabbed the saelite pic from your site. What a mastership in mounting the puzzle- pieces together!
Yes, 30th of June! I hope there will be no football related riots in plakias

Have you taken this any further Chris??
I personnally think this would be ab fab if we could get Googles permission, besides we're not using it for any profit making enterprise and if we leave the Google copyright visible it will give them a plug!

no I haven't done anything further george, not sure if alf has, i'm a little busy at the moment
if you want to contact google and see if you can get an answer from them, that would be good
cheers

Hi Chris
Sorted!!
I sent Google a note this morning, hopefully they will get back to me asap.
I will keep the board informed of any progress.
The begging letter is as follows:
I am a participant in a web site ie 'plakias.co.uk'.
It is a web site for people who go to Plakias Crete for their holidays etc.
We are in the process of trying to create a map of the area, indicating hotels, restaurants, places of interest etc., and one of our members has 'dabbled' with one of your 'Google Earth' images and it will be absolutely perfect for our needs.
The site is entirely NON profit making and is for interest only for the Plakias enthusiast.
The sample tried can be viewed on the message board of www.plakias.co.uk and there is no intention of taking this any further and will be deleted at your request.
The Question: Would you have any objections to us using these images for this purpose. We would of could indicate that the map is by courtesy of Google and all your copyright information would remain visually intact.
We would obviously require your written permission before we progress any further.
I look forward to your reply.

I haven't had a reply from Google yet, if that's what you mean...

I still haven't had any response from Google so I resubmitted the request this morning.
george g...
Well that was quicker.
I think the answer to all our questions is in the following link:
http://earth.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=21422 (http://earth.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=21422)
If your reading this as I am I think the answer is go for it
george g...

well that's pretty conclusive!
so i suppose the next step is to decide what we put on the map
-

I suggest a number on the point of interest with an index. It's got to be the simple solution Chris.
Also the extent of the area the needs to be covered, I suggest just beyond the Oasis at the top of the hill through to Souda Beach.
The input from members is also going to be heavy
(Might I suggest that we all keep quiet until there's something to look at)
Then, where is the map going, so it's easily accessible for everyone? (Admin?? )
This is gonna be brill!!!

I can host it on the Plakias website.
Numbered pins seem a good idea.
What size image do we want (roughly translates as to what altitude do we take snapshots from).
Fitting the whole lot on one screen wont provide enough detail i'd imagine unless you have one of these Dell 30 inchers. (http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=ca&l=en&s=dhs&cs=CADHS1&sku=222-0863)
Another option apart from a static image is to start messing with the Google Maps API but I'll leave that until i'm really bored!
Paul

well....i'm not going to brag about how many inches mine is
this is the one i put together, it is quite big and i suppose it depends on which browser you are using, as to what image and what zooming you are able to do
eg with opera you can zoom right in
(edit, made pic smaller as there was little point to showing it full size)

How about this. (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=http://www.plakias.co.uk/Plakias.kml)
I think its pretty slick. May need to change to satellite view in the top right.
Edit: Added a few more places. Lots of possibility with this. Colour coded pins, links direct from articles/reviews (when set up) etc etc.

Looks good Paul. Just to let you know, when I displayed the map, I got a few errors -
Line 16: <styleUrl> is not supported
Line 31: <styleUrl> is not supported
Line 46: <styleUrl> is not supported
Line 61: <styleUrl> is not supported
Line 76: <styleUrl> is not supported
Line 91: <styleUrl> is not supported
Line 106: <styleUrl> is not supported
The satellite view is very good - frustrating that the coverage of my home area in the uk is nowhere near as detailed.

Thanks Graham,
Just a test really but I have got rid of those errors.
Need to think how to utilise it now.
Do we have everything on one map, i.e Accom, Tavernas, Bars etc with different colour pins?
Seperate map for different categories?

I would go for all on one map with different coloured pins. Although it might be more congested, often people want to see where a restaurant is in relation to their accommodation. Also. it might not be much more congested than havong separate maps as the areas with lots of restaurants are not the same as the apartment areas etc.
-
That is excellent Ploppy!
Now I'm going to have to take a computer on holiday with me so that I can look at the map while I'm there.
-
Yes Ploppy - that is real slick work - very good indeed - well done all of you.

Absolutely fantastic, Ploppy. I am of the same opinion as Graham and Karen. Look forward to seeing the end result!

This is better than I expected guys, your doing a great job.
I do have one critisism though, keep in mind all the hotels, apartments, bars, taverners and other places of interest that readers might want to see, the map is going to be a bit overloaded with pins, unless you have seperate maps.
Good idea about eventually incorporating the FAQ file into the pop-ups!

It's a pity that the pins have such large heads. In these circumstances the proposed map will only be really usable if you use maximum zoom-in.

Yes - I must admit, I was thinking the same. I was expecting the pins that look like inverted teardrops - pointed at the bottom. If these could be simply colour coded to indicate the different categories, they could be kept quite small. Thanks again, Paul, for all your hard work.

OK I will have a go and see what I can do.
It will be nice when they build in folder functionality into the Google Map interpreter so that you can group by categories and choose whether to display them or not.
Paul.
