OK- I thought I would give you all an update on the new harbor planned for Plakias just west of town- past Horizon Hotel. I reviewed the plans with the mayor two weeks ago and I am told that the construction will start on April 15 and the contractor has 24 months to finish. Not to worry about all the trucks rumbling through town- the plan is to have everything brought in by boat. Knowing how our Greek friends keep schedules, I am taking a wait and see attitude about the 15th. If they start, then we should have some excitement in the old town.

Thanks for the info santa. I must admit, I didn't know there was to be a new harbour - is this because the old harbour is too small or for some other reason? I presume the old harbour will still be used when the new harbour is finished or are there other plans for it?

Graham and Karen- The old harbor will still be in place. The new one will take on additional fishing boats as well as some pleasure crafts-- It all sounds very exciting to me-

That's good to hear. A few more people employed in traditional occupations like fishing will help to keep Plakias special.

I agree with you totally- On another subject, a local "Artist" had an inspiration and painted the breakwater wall of the harbor. Be prepared- you can't miss it as you enter the town. Some of you don't like the fountain- boy are you going to have a field day with this bit of art. I suppose we will all get used to it in time. As for me, it is totally out of character especially the colors. Maybe it will look better after some RAKI- Hey- judge for yourself. Also, the taverna in the center of town- the one below the dive2gether center is gone and being replaced by some stores.

I agree with Susan on this one. It's skilfully done but out of place.
While I'm on the subject of improvements, then getting the fountain mended and up and running and replacing some of the broken seats on the way to the far end would improve the appearance of the seafront.

For me the fountain is totally out of place and is a big joke with the strong winds. Should be disposed off.
Agree on the broken benches. It looks terrible.
And a WARNING:
On the foot path from town to the far end quite a few iron pieces are sticking out of the concrete pavement.
Can cause serious injuries! :'(

Hello George,
This is a forum and we can write what we want isnt it?
Perhaps it needs an explanation:
On the way to town we were looking at the works from the pavement and Willemien seriously stubbed her foot against a stud from a removed bench .
It was sticking out ± 5 cm ( ± 2" for Brits ) A day later it was ground off obviously the incident was noticed by the workers.
Could have been worse.
Then watching our way more carefully we observed thinner iron (concrete-iron) (bended) sticking out of the concrete path untill the pavement was properly tiled. Small children tend to run on such pavements, can fall and get nasty injuries.
I.e.: such small not expected obstacles can ruin someones holidays!

OK- I did not see the Mayor, but did speak with the vice-mayor- On the subject of the fountain- there is no clear direction, but I get the feeling it will be fixed and it is here to stay- The harbor will still be built, but as with everything else, it just takes a bit longer to get started. The funds have been approved and all the drawings are done and the permit has been issued. On the matter of the digging in the sand past Meltemi, this is part of the new sewer infrastructure and will be a septic tank and from there will be pumped to the treatment facility-
Anyway, the harbour is located well to the west of Horizon, and as I understand it, one of the conditions on the contractor is that no trucks will rumble through town- all material must come by ship- all in all, it should be interseting and I am looking forward to it- Finally on the wall- I looked at it again and it is totally out of character- what a waste of good paint-

Upstream on the main river that runs to the sea thro Plakias. You pass it if you walk up to the old mill etc. It is interesting that it is above the level of the town so all waste is pumped up to it, treated and then released (I assume) into the river.

John,
Yes I've seen it (on the way to the Old Mill) but assumed it was just a holding tank. Normally (i.e. in UK) solid and liquid would be separated and the liquid treated before discharge to a watercourse when clean. Perhaps one should not enquire too closely into Cretan practice!

Shinaria- great photos- thank you- I suppose we will go through some of this, but let's face it, it is necessary and as these pictures show the end product will be very nice. The only thing I can add, my sources tell me that a condition on then contractor is that nothing is delivered by truck through town- everything arrives by boat and all materials are prepared on water- not land- Now, will there be some deviations- of course, but I am all in favor of this improvement.

From the Crete Gazette
"Fishing port at Plakias"
"The new fishing port at Plakias, offering berths for 80 fishing boats large and small, will be ready in 2 years, aiding the development of fishing in this part of Crete. The harbour will accommodate professional and amateur vessels, ensuring a safe and easy approach and protection from bad weather.
The project will cost 4,306,375.16 euros, with 75% provided by EC funding and 25% by the Greek State. The harbour will conform to the natural environment and include the construction of a windward jetty 150 m. long, a lee jetty 80 m. long, breakwaters and the necessary shore facilities.
A road will also be constructed, connecting the port to the nearby Plakias-Souda road. "

Harribobs- don't you just love the .16? -I mean this is Crete we are talking about- Anyway, this is a bit off this trail, but I could not find your earlier question on the rubber hoses in the walls of the church in Sellia. Here is the answer. A few years ago the church suffered some structural damage due to a distant earthquake. This is the final stage of repair. They will be forcing highstrength conrete into the wall through the tubes. Then the rest of the tubes will be cit off and a final mcoat of stocco will be applied. There you have it-

Haribobs-
The work on the church was completed in time for the Aug.15 celebration. On another note, has anyone noticed the new fountain in the square? the old one was removed and Yianni who runs the shop Art and Nature in Sellia provided the new sculpture. I am heading to Plakias tonight and see if the water is running over the rocks.

OK- I just returned from a weekend in Plakias- Things are getting quiet, but the good news is that they have started on the constructionofm the harbour. The beach below Skinos 2 is the site and by the time you all come next year thare should be much progress by then. Also, these persistent rumors about a large development east of town seem to be correct. I asked around and it seems that this development will become reality sooner than later.

Yes - I'd be interested to know as well. If you mean the 'Plakias Panorama' development, off the main road then I'm not surprised work has started but a year or so ago there was also a development much closer to the beach planned, west of the Paligremnos. Any sign of work there?

As far as the development is concerned, nothing has started. However, I was curious about the land west of Paligremnos- it is clean and fenced and just looked ripe for some excavation and that is why I asked my friend about it and he said what I posted above. Had lunch at SIFIS- great new place. I understand that he will be open during the winter, so come on down- With all the rain recently, there have not been the mud slides that everyone was so worried about because of the fire,so far- so let us keep our fingers crossed.

good news! i look forward to seeing it next month
as for the fountain, it's got to be an improvement! )

Hi Santa
Does anyone know exactly where the new development is going to be situated?
george g...
Yes - I'd be interested to know as well. If you mean the 'Plakias Panorama' development, off the main road then I'm not surprised work has started but a year or so ago there was also a development much closer to the beach planned, west of the Paligremnos. Any sign of work there?
Graham
As far as the development is concerned, nothing has started. Please could someone add the location of the new harbour on to the map, for those of us who are not familiar with the beach below the Skinos 2.

OK- I keep telling you all that there is life west of Ostraco- If you head out of town you will pass Horizon, then Skinos 1 then another hotel the name of which escapes me at the moment and then you will notice Skinos 2 up the hill to the right. Below on your left is a small bay and that is where the harbour will be. I would say it is 1 KM from Ostraco. There, that should give all the idea where it is-

I'm sending a Google Earth placemark to Ploppy so that he can put it on the map.
If I haven't got it in the right place from Santa's description perhaps he'll let me know?

Thanks Santa and Compage for the information

Thanks Santa and Compage for the information
Just returned from a weekend in Plakais- The work on the harbor is progressing very well. They have a road that leads to the new harbor area and are seriously filling in the area - I was told they need 6000 trucks of rocks, stones and dirt.
As to the development in the Meltemi area, a good friend and local in the know told me that this land is now in the hands of a real estate investment fund with Grecotel a partner also. So, I gues this will also get legs soon.
The weather was lovely and there is still a lot of activity in town.
I will be off to the States for the holidays on Dec 14 and be back in Plakias the end of January- Will get you an update then-
In the mean time Happy Holidays to all of you-

At the moment the work that is being done all along the beach area from Antoni's Place to Plakias Bay Hotel is a network of roads. We were really concerned when they first started the work as if it was one big development it would be horrendous and two of the roads go right past where we live. So we started asking around and it was confirmed by Haris from Moto Auto Plakias that at the moment they are building roads which have been planned for the last 15 years. It is all part of what they call the town plan. So they are putting in lots of roads plus infrastructure i.e. drains, sewers etc.
At the moment I don't know if Grecotel have a definite plan but Haris has said over the next five years the area will probable be developed. The proposed development which previously appeared on a previous posting and which only appears on the Property in Greece website, I believe, is pure speculation as if you only put in apartments over the size of land they are proposing it could house half of Rethymno!!
Remember things usually move very slowly out here.

Somebody mentioned earlier that everything would be brought in from the seaside... That means a lot of traffic past ostraco...
Which size has this "network of roads"? Happy we have made it to Plakias this year before all of this developments started... Quo vadis Plakias?

The 'network' involves 2 roads running parallel with the beach road, the upgrading of the road from Paligremnos up to the school and about another 10 off shoots from these roads.
Work on Plakias Panorama has now started.
-
reminds me on an illustration I photoshopped for an earlier thread...
Does it meet the real dimensions?
Seems the "development of Plakias is exploding now...

I think this development is pure speculation, I spent ages searching on the internet for this and could only find it on the Properties in Greece web site. The 'town plan' has been in the public domain for the last 15 years and apparently when KretaEiendon (Plakias Panorama) were looking to move down here they assumed all the roads were already there. This development which appears to be only apartments is based on the plans and is not going to happen. I've been told it will more likely be a couple of hotels (Grecotel being one) and then more housing.
It's a really shame it's being developed but the local community do need more money coming in for them to survive.

Since you live in Plakias, why don't you go to the construction site of the Limani, take a few pictures and post them-

Santa, could you look at the forum map (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=http://www.plakias.co.uk/Plakias.kml&ie=UTF8&t=k) and tell us if we've put the new harbour pin in the right place?

Hello Santa,
Am I right in thinking this is just an improvement on the current harbour in Plakias (i.e. a few tourist boats and local fishermen)? It seems a fair way out of town especially knowing many people's reluctance to walk.
I wonder if it means Plakias will be added to the ferry route running from Paleohora to Hora Sfakion. That would be an asset.

I think it's a bit far out of town Mike to incorporate the ferry, but agree it would be an asset.

I understood that it was being built primarily as a safe haven for local fishing boats (not just those immediately local to Plakias). The existing harbour is not an all weather safe haven.
It will probably also encourage other useage.
