Title: Iraklio-Plakias by night
Post by: Wuil on March 27, 2006, 03:22:47 PM
This year will be the first time we will have to drive ourselves from the airport to Plakias. As we arrive in the evening it will be dark at the time we'll be on our way.
Does anybody have information or tips that could be usefull to us ?

Thanks !

We are used to driving on Crete (many years experience) but last year made the return journey to/from airport/Plakias for the first time. It was very easy indeed. Very little traffic at night time on that East/West highway and I found night driving easier than day driving - oncoming lights warning you of any opposition (Cretan drivers) in your vicinity. All in all we thoroughly enjoyed the trip and - er- overtaking a few taxis in the process. The information given in the other replies - particularly the directions is good. The other advice is a lot to digest but worth reading. Didn't see any traffic police at night (famous last words).  It is quite a long drive but easy and relaxing. No urban driving - the airport is right adjacent to the main East/West highway.

We had also silent fears before our first night-drive from Irakleion to Plakias but the trip was a great pleasure. Full moon lit us the way home as the sun was going down.

Chris,
In case the hole is not fixed and scares you off    you can take the route via the Imbros Gorge.

The views   are worth the de-tour!

I've been up and down that road a few times....and it still scares me

last year we went up it on the back of a pickup truck...that was fun

coming down was much slower

glad to hear they did fix that hole

i've seen roadworks lasting longer than that!!  (what's the situation with the national around rethymnon?)

it's funny looking my photo again...mandy is staring at the people further down the gorge because they were hanging around while i was waiting to take the picture and just as i took it, one of them stepped into the gap and i didn't notice.....i think he'll be 'shopped' out very shortly

I don't see the problem- this just shows how clever our Greek friends are at parking their car- no matter how difficult the place is-

The car had a Swiss ID plate.
The Swiss are apparently familiar with solving their parking problems as well.
(Or learned to park the Greek way?)

That car belonged to a Swiss guy called Roli, who was paraplegic.Unfortunately he died four years ago. He is buried in the little church yard in Myrthios

Churchyard in Mythios

Coming from Plakias, at the R/H bend, instead of turning LEFT to Myrthios take the R/H bend and after approx 80/100yds turn SHARP LEFT up the "dirt track" for what seems like forever up the VERY steep VERY narrow VERY twisty track and its at the top on the left.
Its the most beautiful, spectacular and peaceful place you could ever imagine.
Well worth the visit if you've got the nerve. :'(  :'(  :'(

Apologies if some of this thread seems a little disjointed now, but I have removed several posts as they added little to the information originally requested.

I considered removing the whole thread, but the information at the beginning is useful and I did not want to loose this.

I would suggest that if personal issues arise between members in future they should be discussed on a one to one basis using the personal messenger facility.
