The CIC (Cretan International Community) is organising the following walks:
Rethymno walking - Bonripari Fortress
Wednesday 15th. March
This is the first of two walks in the Rethymno area in March. Primarily the walks are planned to give Rethymno CIC-people a knowlegde of walking possibilities in the area we live in and love.
• Driving to Agia Paraskevi via Armeni/Kastellos
• Walking from Agia Paraskevi to Bonripari Fortress and back again on “agritiko” roads and tracks
• About 2 km and 100 m ascent to the Fortress
It is a short and mainly easy walk to the Bonripari Fortress. Bonripari is a natural fortress constructed of a Genovese pirate Enrico Pescatore who where “visited” the island 1206-1210. The fortress is placed on a hill with steep rock faces on 3 sides and a wall with 3 towers to the north side, and where the only entrance is. The buildings are partly ruined, but it is a good wiew around the nearby area as well as to the White Mountains and Psiloritis.
Agia Paraskevi is a small chapel with a nice picnic area. If the weather is good, we can bring our own lunch here. There are also tavernas in Armeni
Meeting point: Armeni on the Spili road where it is signposted for Kastellos - a little before Armeni and about 9 km from Rethymno – 10.00-10.15 am
Cost: Nil, but there will be a collection for the Animals of Rethymno
Lunch: Primarily as picnic in the picnic area at Agia Paraskevi. If the weather is too bad, we can visit a taverna in Armeni.

Conditions:
• Non-members are welcome but will needed to be booked in by a member and accompanied by that member on the walk
• Sturdy walking shoes are compulsory
• Walking sticks can be helpful up the steep fortress-entrance
• Adequate/appropriate clothing just in case
Rethymno walking – Circular walk from Levkogia Wednesday, 22nd. March 2006
This is the second of two walks in the Rethymno area in March. Primarily the walks are planned to give Rethymno CIC-people a knowlegde of walking possibilities in the area we live in and love.
• Driving to Levkogia – from Rethymno on the Spili road, leaving it near Koxare and through the Kourtaliotiko Faragi, Asomatos and down to Levkogia
• Walking a circular route from Levkogia in the Plakias area in the south, to Timeos Stavros and Giannou and back again to Levkogia
• About 7,5 km and 320 m ascent/descent walking up to the summit of Timeos Stavros. 250 m ascent for those who are not walking the upper track. Moderate walking uphills with partly steep ascent and along the paths. Easy walking after reaching the road descending down to Giannou and back again to Levkogia
We are walking a circular route from Levkogia, up to Timeos Stavros (401 m), through Giannou and back again to Levkogia – mostly along an “agrotiki” road but also some tracks. It is possible to walk up to the summit of Timeos Stavros (401 m) where the last bit is on a track. Here are walking sticks and sturdy shoes recommended. Those who don’t won’t to walk the upper track, can take a rest. The wiew is excellent from the summit as well as the end of the road. After Timeos Stavros we are walking against Giannou – first part on a good track and than an “agrotiki” road. From Giannou we are walking the road back to Levkogia. In Levkogia we can take a look at the Donkey Santuary and stop on a taverna.

what a lovely walk ( the second one)...from lefkofia take the road by stelios taverna, following it all the way up to timos stavros, over to giannou
if you wanted to go a bit further you could turn right, through the village and go over to prevelli monastery, (take the left turn after the village) it's uphill but worth it when you get to the top.
stop for a beer and a sandwich at the monastery ( well,... outside it). follow the road on around ( past the new WW2 monument) with the views over preveli beach, you can go down if you can handle the steps. the road sweeps round past the old monastery and will leave you in lefkoyia
great walk...we'll be doing it 17th may!!

I'd also recommend the walk. Last year we got a taxi to the monastory (about 12 euro), then walked back to Levkogia. Stopping off for a beer at the small cafe in Giannou - very pleasant. Doing it that way means that it's mostly downhill.

Hello Chris,
You seem to have your holiday walks planned already. I suggest going easy on the raki the evening before.
From personal experience I can report that a cool Mythos tastes wonderful imbibed sat on the wall round the church at the top of Timeos Stavros. Well worth lugging it up the hill.

In my previous post I should have said that the photo was of the laundry area at Giannou. Off message but - I see that my photo appeared as an attachment but harribobs are 'user posted images'. Does that mean they have come from a url or is there something else that makes them a user posted image rather than an attachment?

a little petrol for the engine never harmed mate!
we've got a basic plan which includes a couple days in Sougia, then a another couple in Matala, walks up around Omolos (pachnes and ginglos) and a few more local, fingers crossed now for the weather and no delays!

Like Chris (Harribobs) I'm planning some walks for my holiday. Can someone give me some information about the new track going west from Souda Bay.
1. How far up the stream (Finikas river?) does the track start at the west end of the beach?
2. Is there a bridge over the stream or do you have to wade through it?
3. Does the track go all the way to the main Rodakino/Sellia road and if so is there much traffic on it?

Yes we did this super walk for a 2nd time in October 2005. The route was apparantly blocked during some of 2005 prior to October - the river crossing being near inacessable.
Don't walk up the stream but walk up the road (surfaced) Northwards away from the beach. I would guess for about 1/3 mile - maybe less. Then take a left turning down a track. At this stage it is obvious where to go and turning left again you take a new bridge over the river. All good tracks. Indeed some (foolhardy ?) tourists in small hire cars passed us last year
The track follows the coast all the way to Rodakina - with - notwithstanding my remarks about those few hire cars - very little traffic indeed - perhaps none at all.
It comes out at the beaches at Rodakina and you have to walk to upper Rodakina if you wish to get on to the main Rodakina Selia road.

we've done it a few times, it's a great walk and quite an easy one with excellent returns in views
you can get to the path from the beach, but you have to get over the stream at the far end. we've hopped over it in previous years but last year we had to take our boots off and wade....
over the stream you turn right and force your way through a small overgrown patch and have a short sharp up hill path, probably 15 minutes, climb. the path then follow s the headland round looking over souda
) before coming down to the beaches at the lower end of the rodakino road. there's a steep tarmaced road going past a taverna/ apartments ( i've not been in there) then down by the beach there's another taverna that does decent toasties and a well deserved pint

Thanks for the info guys. Let's hope it stays as a track for walkers etc. rather than becoming a route for vehicles. Tracks like this have a nasty habit in Greece of becoming tarmaced.
On another topic, are the buses running to Plakias yet, can one of the residents inform us? (I may be mistaken in my belief that they only run in summer).

Yes, it does! Has anyone measured the upward gradient. It's just a miracle ... and it's even more marvelous to cool your feet halfway down the track to the beach...

I think your brain has become addled with raki young man!!! There are a couple of roads in the UK where there is the same optical illusion. You're too young to remember, but in the 1970s Nationwide (BBC current affairs programme) featured it. As Scotty said in Star Trek, "you canna change the laws of physics".
Nice to see Mrs Harribobs has enrolled- keep you under control.

i tell you it's the strangest thing to see, you know the road is going up hill yet the water is running up as well
ever time I'm there i have to stand and look at it, throw twigs in and watch them float up the hill
it's one of the highlights of the walk to Shinaria

There is a stretch of the A1(M) near where I live and whichever way you go along it you would swear you were going uphill. Something to do with the lie of the surrounding land apparently.
By the way, have you just booked your September holiday with Olympic? I always thought they got completely booked up for the coming season by Christmas.

yep booked thru olympic, i can check availability if anyone wants although i didn't bother when i booked mine, just checked now and there's plenty of rooms left (9 i reckon)
i booked my May holiday in March, and they still had rooms then ( about six left i think)
