I agree
-
i told you it was easy....
now then a few questions about it, if anyone knows
I have read two statements about the old monastery
1) that it was abandoned in Venetian times
2) that the germans blew it up in reprisal for them hiding commonwealth stragglers after the battle in 1941
any ideas which one is correct?
and btw when we where there last may, there was a new building on the site, any ideas what that is all about?

The monastry has its interesting own site: [a href=\"http://www.preveli.org]http://www.preveli.org
According this site the Germans destroyed the old monastry in WWII.

Excellent site, thanks
I did say venetian but i meant in the turkish occupation
It certainly seems to have had a turbulant history with the lower monastery suffering the worst
great picture of Abbot Agathangelos Lagouvardos on that site
(http://www.preveli.org/files/moni/m21.jpg)
and here's his statue at the preveli memorial

This picture was taken inside one of the better preserved buildings in 91 and documents some of the more recent history of the place. The turbulence seems to have taken over the painter(s) mind. I heard that the mural was made by French hippies who lived in the ruins a whole winter during the late 80s.

Harribobs,
When did that mural get painted? I recognise where it is - it is the back of the derelict building on Reb Beach, but I don't remember seeing the mural in June this year.
Where is the rock sculpture?

Harribobs,
The quality of your pictures is astounding. What equipment have you got? (I'm referring to your photographic equipment, in case anyone gets the wrong idea. )

As I saw the photo of Kato Preveli I remembered that there was some construction in progress when I passed by the last time. They made a new roof on one of the buildings and more. Does anybody know what´s going on there? Restoring the monastry? It`s a phantastic site and worth to be preserved! Once [before the fence was really "rabbit-proof"] we walked through the quiet streets and abondoned houses harvesting the grapes and "Feigen" while collecting sights in our scetchbooks.
Or will it become a very special Tourist-village "Live like the monks on crete".
Yours sincerely
Shinaria

the construction work is to the left of my photo and seemed to be a whole new building
i really haven't a clue about what is going on though, but I have emailed the webmaster of the preveli site to see if he knows
