Title: Places we visited
Post by: Barny on August 21, 2005, 02:19:19 PM
Hi all,
We hired a jeep this year for three days and went to three diferent places.
On day one we went to the archaeological museum in Heraklion, well worth the drive and even though it was full of coach parties there were many wonderfull things to see includind the Phaistos disk. Its hard to imagine just how old these things are and they have survived! (bet my Asda plates wont)
We then walked around the city streets, hot busy and people trying to sell you stuff on the streets and drag you into their shops! not nice at all. Walked around the venitian fortress but unable to get in for a closer look.
To sum up, museum 10/10 but the city itself 4/10. Took  ages to find the way out again even ended up on the wrong side of the carriage way once! (blast those car horns!)

Day two. Drove to the Arkadi monastery another wonderfull place 500m above sea level with surroundings of olive trees and vineyards. A lot of history here about the Turks invading and killing everyone there, even the skulls of the heroes with sword marks are still kept. Nice little taverna for a cold one after and a shop to buy monastery made raki, which is still in my fridge!

Day three we went to the Diktean cave, a long drive from Plakias but well worth it.
You snake up twisting winding roads stopping at the little villages to look around at the local merchandice (?) and then finaly after reaching 900m above sea level you are on a fertile green plateau which used to be the home of thousands of windmills pumping water up for the people, still a few left but the sight is amazing, how can we climb this far up a mountain and find this? Then on to the cave which is said to be the birth place of Zeus. Another long climb up then down, down into the cave of which the sights are absolutely amazing! Well worth it. After the climb down, have a cold one in one of the tavernas overlooking the plateau and try to weigh it all up.

A very good three days travelling. The only downfall for me was that in a tiny little village in the middle of nowhere i came accross a CAT digger is there no escape? (i work for CAT in Leicester).

actually Belgian beers are a lot more available in the UK than they used to be - you can get Leffe and Hoegaarden on tap, and my local off-license stocks a variety of Trappist beers - Chimay, Westmalle etc, as well as Kriek and other lambic beers, though not my favourite brand Mort Subite.

oh, and there's Stella Artois :'(

favourites?  hmmm  tough one

Duval was too strong for me really, as was a lot of the others   Hoegaarden...i don't think i can ever get my head around cloudy beer. has anyone tried Rodenbach ?

i enjoyed the Leffe and (as Rodger says) i can get it at home, we had a few Bruges Tripel which were excellent and Toperflu (sp), one that really took my fancy was Hommel from poperinge

Ah yes, Poperings (?) Hommelbier, I remember quaffing a few glasses of that in a nice cafe in Antwerpen.  Quite a tongue-twister when you've had a few.

Oh yes I would like to have a drink in Ostraco. I've been in Plakias for the first time in August 2005 and it was really really great. I believe I will be back there next year, maybe in May and why not in September. I did enjoy a lot Ostraco bar and had lot of nice night there. Maybe I will see one of you there one day...

I just found out that my local specialist off-licence sells not only Grimbergen, Verboden Vrucht and the like but also ... Mythos!  So the other night I single-handedly polished off their entire stock (er, two 330 ml bottles).   And last week I bought some Cretan mountain tea from a couple of Greek girls on the seafront.  Brighton gets more like a Greek island every day

well yes, I must admit that going back to Plakias this year has quite spoiled me for Brighton beach.

For the first few years after I moved to Brighton I didn't go away for a summer holiday, thinking why bother, I'm already here...  but it's not the same at all is it?

Speaking of Raki- you should keep the bottle in the freezer- much like Vodka- its great and almost gives it a sweeter, smoother taste- takes the edge off a bit try
it-- can't wait till June-July and August-
