Title: V češtině
Post by: OndraH on August 03, 2005, 03:37:12 PM
28 stupňů - hm, no, musely tam být min. čtyřicítky.

Taky by se dalo čekat podle těchto stránek, že tam byli jako utristi samí Angláni, ale spíš mi připadlo, že skoro nejvíc tam bylo Čechů...:-)

Hi OndraH
I'm sure that if anyone on the site speaks Czech (I think), you'll get a reply. Meanwhile I'm going to try a free translator.

Hi George, thanks for reply.
I just wrote that we were for the first time to Plakias and had good days there. We were there betw. 9 and 20 July. There were quite a lot of Czechs so I expected that maybe some of them visit also this forum.

I was surprised also by a strong wind and extremely high temperature certainly exceeding 40 centigrades, although all weather reports for Crete announced temp. max. around 28...

Your welcome OndraH
I did get a verbal translation, but it was a bit vague.
It confirms what you've just said and did you mention something about your relatives?

Hi OndraH
I didn't, but I know numerous people of Phillipino, Polish, Russian, Hungarian, Bulgarian etc extraction, who all got together and translated what they could.
You will be surprised what we can do on this site, I been going to Plakias for over 10 years and I'm still learning.
I hope you enjoyed your first visit to Plakias and welcome to the site.

Why do you think the temperature was this high- I think it is unlikely? Even if you found a thermometer in the shade and without a significant micro-climate, it certainly won't have been in a Stevenson screen. Predicted maximum temperatures in the area (Yahoo, 10 day forecast) until Aug 20th are 32C. Temperatures quoted in the press (UK) are normally taken at lunchtime so you could have to add up to 5 deg. to that for the temperature at its maximum (3.00-4.00pm?). So it could have been 33 deg.

In spite of what many British holidaymakers will tell you temperatures over 100F (ca. 38C) are not very common in the Med at least for resorts right on the coast. When they do exceed this there is usually comment in the British press. Inland places (Granada & Seville spring to mind) do routinely exceed this.

However hot it was I hope it didn't spoil your enjoyment.

For about two years running not long ago they had to shut the Samaria Gorge for quite a long period as temperatures reached 50C

I think on the South coast in sun trap areas at exceptional times the temperatures could get very high - even when measured via proper equipment.

We have a min/max thermometer by the door of the shop (in the shade) and last week we were getting readings up to 35 at mid day, so out of interest I put the thermometer at home on the balcony in the sun at around 3pm and it registered 45, I was hiding in the shade   !

When checking a weather forecast we always assume it will be a few degrees hotter down here than quoted for Heraklion or Xania.

A meteorological temperature is the air temperature. Putting a thermometer in the sun is just recording the temperature the sun has heated the thermometer to, so is meaningless.

Re. John R's point, I obviously don't know how many meteorological recording stations there are on Crete. However, on checking on the internet, I found that the highest recorded temperature on Crete in August is 37C (100F), although interestingly the maxima recorded for June, July, and September were higher (41C/106F, 40C/104F, and 39C/103F respectively).

With the amount of wind in Plakias during the hottest months I would not have thought there was much of a micro climate effect; however, I could believe it was a degree of so more on the south coast than the north.

When the temperature in Mediterranean holiday destinations exceeds 100F it generally makes the UK press. Ditto the one occasion when it did so in the UK (August 10 2003 I think).

Mike

I was not intending to give a meteorological reading, I was giving people an idea of how hot it was that day in the sun.

Most of the buses on Crete now show the temperature on an LED display at the front of the bus. Whilst on my travels in June they were showing temperatures of 35-36 C at times whilst I was in south - this was slightly inland - it was a bit cooler on the coast. This would be during the morning, mainly.

I noticed a difference between the south and Heraklion. When I arrived at Heraklion (at about 4 pm) is was only 25. When I returned for my return flight I was sat reading in a cafe at lunchtime and it felt noticeably cooler than it had during the rest of my holiday, even though it was still good weather.

Does anyone know if the jolly old Meltemi (the wind, not the bar) has started up yet.
