We have booked two weeks during the end of July and beginning of August 2005 at Anna's Apartments in Mirthios. Has anybody been there before?
I know that the village is not strictly in Plakias, but as it's our first trip to crete we intend to hire a car and at least spend some time travelling as well enjoy the delights of Plakias itself.
We meticulously researched the islands resorts beforehand and felt that Plakias offered something different and hope that we are not proved wrong.

I have not stayed there but they look quite spectacular and I'm sure they will be excellent. Mirthios is a nice place with spectacular views of Plakias down below and only a few minutes walk (very steep downhill) to Plakias. Considerably few more minutes on way back . Good eating places in Mirthios itself if you choose not to go down to Plakias say in the evening.

Thank you for your prompt reply. We are really looking forward to going in July. We have heard so much about this place and it seems like a little oasis in a world of commercial over-hyped tourism.
We hope to hire a car so we we can drive down to Plakias as we have heard that the descent was rather steep.

The descent is indeed steep but if you are fit (we are now in our 60's but fit and quickly ascend/descend to/from Mirthios several times per holiday) then it is perfectly ok. All on concrete paths. Torch would be required at night.
We also hire a car. If you search this forum you will see many recommendations for local hire - which is generally better and cheaper than hiring via multinationals from home.
We used to hire from the Plakias firm Anso - [a href=\"http://www.ansotravel.com]http://www.ansotravel.com[/url] and were totally satisfied. Last year and for this year we have hired from Caravel, http://www.caravel.gr (http://www.caravel.gr) and found them equally satisfactory but perhaps slightly cheaper. They are all very helpful and reliable.
It will be rather hot when you are there but it is a wonderful place that you are going to visit. Will be interested in your reports when you return.

Thanks John, I have been looking at car hire recently and have been considering Caravel and Alianthos (10% discount if booked through Anna Apartments). A small car with air con will be the order of the day. I am considering whether to book it for two weeks as I would drive from Heraklion airport to Plakias initially and then back at the end of the end of the holiday.
Ideally I would like to do this, but perhaps hire it for fewer days with some gaps in between where we would stay in Plakias and get to know the place. I am not sure if this can be achieved though.

I found this statement in a search of this forum :-
One thing that Anso will do is to hire you a car in two blocks of three days - pick up the car on arrival at Heraklion Airport and leave it at the Plakias Office three days later and then use the reverse procedure to have a car for a couple of days at the end of your stay and finally drive yourself back to the airport.
Obviously you could hire for longer periods than mentioned above but the above should meet your needs.
For your info, my full 2 week hire of a small air conditioned car from Caravel is costing me 300 euro - at the end of September though.

We stayed at Anna's Apartments in Mirthios last year for a couple of weeks and found it very relaxing and quiet (22 June -4 July). The rooms are very clean, quite large and all the people are really friendly. Everything you'll need is there; if you find there's something you want, just drop them an e-mail and I'm sure they'll help out. Last year I asked if a mozzie plug in thing would be available...no probs.
We also took advantage of the offer via Anna's with Alianthos car hire (10% discount). Got a fiat Seicento 1100 cc (?) thing (with air-con) for under 300 euros. It was band new! Met at the airport in the arrival hall by a young lady with a card with our name on it & dropped it back there when we left. Did a lot of driving around up mountains and it was fine!
You'll need a car really if you're in Mirthios. You'll have a walk down to Plakias and back up about once then probably tell yourself it's much quicker by car....once you've regained the use of you brain to think that is! Some nice places in Mirthios to eat...The Panorama is one we used quite abit. Good food and good price and good atmosphere. Quite old in comparison to the newly refurbished thing next door( had a meal here, quite expensive (in comparison) and to be truthful, a little disappointing...).
Infact, we tried to get in to Anna's again this year but the apartments were full. However, Yiannis (son of Anna) also manages some other apartments in Mirthios & by the beach in Plakias. So got a one again in Mirthios. Must admit it doesn’t look as polished as Anna's but photos can be deceiving but it was available, looks clean and well kitted out and was about 15 euros a night cheaper! Also booked another car with Alianthos (still 10% discount!).
Have fun

We have stayed at Anna's apartments several times over the last three years and they are absolutely the best! She's a wonderful landlady, leaving gifts of cakes, biscuits or fresh free-range eggs; they're a lovely friendly family, and the apartments are superb. Being above Plakias makes for an incredibly relaxing atmosphere, and the three restaurants in Mirthios are just great when you can't be bothered heading down the hill.

Could you share name of those restaurants/tavernas which is worth to each and drink? I'll be there for two weeks on beggining of Jully.

Stayed 8 days in Plakias 11-19 May 05 and had most of the time lunch and dinner in town at various taverna's. Were never dis-appointed at any place. Advise: hang on to Cretian meals. Suggest as starter: a mix of all starters at Mousses. Most likely available at all places. Lunch at Peligramnos in their nice garden.
Relax and enjoy. We have to wait another year.
Beachcombers.

I fully endorse Mousses. Go hungry if you have one of their set meals. A few tavernas in Plakias do them but they are not very common in Greece as a whole. See the Mousses reviews under FAQ. Click here. (http://forums.plakias.co.uk/index.php?act=faq&article=20) It is near the Ostraco bar, on the seafront.

What was your opinion of the Anna Apartments. Thinking of booking for 2006

If you have a car then I'm sure you will thoroughly enjoy your stay in Mirthios where you will have the benefit of fantastic views in a quiet, peaceful setting.

We had a wonderful time there in 2005. We had room 17 and the rooms were cleaned every day and bed linen and towels changed every two days. The rooms were spotless.
When it was known that my birthday was on the 27th July, we came back on the day to find a note wishing me happy birthday, with a greek cake/pudding and a bottle of bubbly!
We hired a car for the whole two weeks to try to explore crete a bit more but we found that although other places were nice to visit, plakias was the place we always came back to.
So for 2006 we are going back to Plakias itself but we would have no hesitation about rebooking at Anna's if we were going to hire a car for 2006. In fact it is a shame that their other apartments (Fedra Apartments), are not in the centre of Plakias itself as based on our experience at Anna's, we would have booked there instead.
Mirthios is about two to three miles further up from the coast and a car is necessary. For the first five or so days of our stay (from July 26th) it was windy in Plakias (no there's a surprise!) but the effect was even more exaggerated in Mirthios, although there were no clouds in the sky, the sun was out but it was blowing a gale! Explain that one if you will!
By the way there are a few very good tavernas within spitting distance of the apartments itself. If you have transport then there won't be many places that you will get better treatment!
