I used the Plakias local firm Anso travel apap@ret.frothnet.gr [a href=\"http://www.ansotravel.com]http://www.ansotravel.com[/url] for many years and had no complaints. However last year (and next year) I used, am using, Caravel - info@caravel.gr http://www.caravel.gr/ (http://www.caravel.gr/) who proved equally good/efficient and a little cheaper. I have booked them to meet me from my plane at 3am in the morning next September and leave my car at Heraklion in the early hours at the end of my stay. Difficult to choose. Absolutely no complaints about Anso - I feel a little guilty leaving them - but Caravel, all the way from Heraklion did deliver/retrieve  the car to/from my doorstep (Have to collect/return to/from Anso in Plakias - no big deal) and were cheaper. They offer full insurance cover (and I mean FULL) and were VERY efficient. I chose them through recommendations on this forum.

They are both excellent trustworthy and reliable companies - so you decide and take your pick.

Like John I have used both Anso and Caravel and had good service from both.  One thing that Anso will do is to hire you a car in two blocks of three days - pick up the car on arrival at Heraklion Airport and leave it at the Plakias Office three days later and then use the reverse procedure to have a car for a couple of days at the end of your stay and finally drive yourself back to the airport.

If you have already arranged transfers then you are possibly better to wait until you are in resort and then see what sort of deal you can put together with the local car hire offices.  There are several companies to choose from.

Two years ago we choose a car from alianthos. Unfortunately we had a flat tyre during a trip to sellia [sparewheel on board]. To our surprise we had to pay 80 € [  !] though we paid the extra charge for "full insurance" Next time we will go with anso I think...

Even FULL insurance doesn't usually include tyres. nor usually damage to underside of car. We had a puncture with an anso car - no tyre damage - and the local Plakias garage repaired it very cheaply.

FULL insurance in Greece to me means a complete waiver of any excess charges for accident damage, even when your fault.  With Anso you had to ask for that otherwise they might not include it.

Can I also mention Motoplakias - contact Haris at maplakia@otenet.gr. You will see from my recent post that I just hired a car from him. I heard from some Brits who live in Plakias that he is just so helpful and I can endorse that.

For the last two years I've used - Citycar in Heraklion, car at the airport when you arrive, and can drop it back there when doen. Admittedly we use the car usually for the whole two weeks.
Details below, and if you want a quote ask for George :-

info@citycar.gr
City Car (http://www.citycar.gr)

Pay Euro 300 for 13 days for a little Atos, with a/c - fine for what you need.

Good luck,

Neil

That's the same price I've been quoted from Caravell for same car for 14 days

I can also vouch for MotoPlakias.  We have used them for some years and always had good service.  As I have said elsewhere in the forum, they will also arrange taxi transfers to and from the airport.  Their phone numbers are 0030 28320 31785 / 31908 / 32234.

We have just arrange to hire a Skoda Fabia 1.4 in high season with Anna Cars of Heraklion for a very good price. The insurance appears to be very comprehensive.

There was a big variation of quotes that we recieved for the same type of vehicles with similar insurance. For a fourteen day hire period the most expensive was over 200 euro more.

Has anybody had any experience of using this hire company?

I had a Jimny (dreadful name) for 12days last year from the Alianthos and agree the were very helpful and the discount was very good when I told him how long I wanted it for. No trouble with the car and I did 900KM over a lot of dodgy roads (there are a few around) and took it back a totally different colour, inside and out.
Will use them again this year!

Petrol prices have gone up percentagewise more than the UK, owing to so much of the UK price being tax. I think unleaded was virtually 1 Euro a litre (May 2005). Still cheaper than here though. Would get someone else to confirm as I could be wrong.

Just returned from Crete. I stayed like usual in the Youth Hostel in Plakias (http://www.yhplakias.com).

As I arrived in the late night and I had only one week time, I decided this time to rent a car directly from Heraklio. (In Plakias I usually take one from Alianthos or Auto Moto Plakias).

This time I booked it from Citycar in Heraklio (http://www.citycar.gr).
The regular offer in the internet was about 185 EUR per week for a Fiat Seicento with A/C. When I got in contact with Jorgos he made a even better price - and I got it below 150 for a week including all insurance.
The car was delivered to the airport and I could return it at the same spot.
It was very new and in a perfect condition.
