Title: Dog Dazer
Post by: Mike G on April 06, 2005, 03:38:24 PM
In over 25 Greek holidays I have had many enjoyable walks and these form an important part of Greek holidays for me.

However, on quite a few occasions walks have been spoiled by aggressive dogs and I have sometimes had to abandon a walk because of them. On a few occasions an aggressive dog has tried to attack me but (so far) has been restrained before reaching me by a chain- really frightening!

Has anyone any experience of the Dog Dazer? These are small, hand held electronic devices (about £40) which emit a loud high pitched sound, inaudible to humans but apparently frightening to an aggressive dog. It was wondering if these are more effective than a large stone or a sturdy stick which I have used in the past.

i have just had a scout round and there are some reviews of it here (http://www.bikeforums.net/archive/index.php/t-44953) on a bike forum

it seems it's not as effective as their advertising would make out (and expensive imho)

Thanks. One of the comments suggested using a pepper spray. A couple of things came to mind:

1. Is a pepper spray legal? I wouldn't want to be arrrested at Gatwick or even worse, Greece.

2. A Dog Dazer works at a reasonable distance. With some of the aggressive dogs I have encountered I wouldn't like to have to wait until they were close enough to use a pepper spray before taking action.

i just had a thought about you trying to explain to greek customs man what either the spray or the dog dazer were!

on a more serious note, i've always found a extended walking pole works pretty well ( and learning how to shout 'ELLA' in an authoritive voice)
