Just tried to book the Lamon Aparthotel for June 7th. with Kosmar - plane seats all gone! We like Crete, and were hoping to find a quiet Cretan village and spend 2 weeks sunbathing and eating and drinking Cretan style (not the Raki!)
Where else can we go? or who else is there that goes to Plakias? Should we go independantly and book a flight, Taxi and try to book the Lamon over the phone?
Any help appreciated.

My advice would be to go independently.
There are always flights, overnight and cheap or daytime and more expensive.
You pays your money and takes your choice!
Accommodation should not be a problem.

According to Fraoula (13/9/04), who I think is in the travel business, the other tour operators in Plakias are Olympic, Argo, Kosmar and Cachet travel. Of these Olympic and Kosmar are mainstream and the other two are much smaller and more expensive.
First Choice pulled out for 2005 after many years in the resort. Shame, as they were very cheap. If you put First Choice into the forum search engine I'm sure you will get lots of hits as there were many posts last year and several of us were very disappointed about how FC treated us and handled the issue in general.

May I just add that Argo, after dealing with Plakias for two seasons also felt that Plakias was non-profitable for them and so did not re-new thier contract for summer 2005.

This week I have booked a flight to Heraklion on 14th June and there seemed to be several flights to choose from, both to Heraklion and Chania (they all go on Tuesdays). So if you want to do that just go along to your local travel agent and enquire. My travel agent came up with more options than I had found on the web. You can then arrange your accommodation independently. Sometime during 14th to 28th June I will be turning up in Plakias and finding a room when I arrive. I am hoping to visit Paleochora and Sougia before going to Plakias.

wouldn't you be better going into hania if you're going to paleohora first?
and are you going to do the ferry route from paleohora to sphakia?

I considered flying to Chania but what I didn't tell you was that I might be going on to Matala after I have been to Plakias. Also I discovered that Chania airport is in the middle of nowhere quite a long way from Chania with no buses, so it would be an expensive taxi ride. I know Iraklion airport very well and there is a very regular local bus service into town.

sorry not replying sooner mate, no excuses!
i've never looked at the buses from the airport, so ..... but it is a long way out ( we usually pick up a car from there)
now...Matala! my other love you leave the day trippers to the main beach and slog over to red beach
what a reward, we're based at plakias next month but we'll have a few days there

Yep, If you stay in Matala you can avoid the day trippers completely by spending the day on Red Beach, as you say, or on Kommos beach which is on the other side, to the north. Then you can enjoy Matala in the evening.
The ony trouble is that from Plakias to Matala it takes 4 buses, i.e.
Plakias to Bale
Bale to Aghia Galini
Aghia Galini to Phaestos
Phaestos to Matala
Some of it might have to be done by taxi, if the connections don't work.

Matala would have to be unbelievably good for most people to consider undertaking a journey like that!!

Obviously only a personal opinion, but we usually (not always) end up doing one visit per year - usually after visitng Phestos (well worth it). We sort of enjoy our couple of hours there but are then very glad to get back to Plakias (always are !!)

I've never actually had to do the journey from Plakias to Matala (or v.v.) on all 4 buses - something usually happens to make it easier.
Several years ago I was travelling from Lendas to Plakias. Now there is only one bus out of Lendas per day, and it leaves at 6.30 a.m.! So I got to Aghia Galini in time for breakfast before taking the day trip boat from there to Preveli beach, spent the day at Preveli and then took the other boat to Plakias. Better than going all the way by bus.
Then the last time I went to Plakias, in 2002, I got a lift all the way from Matala with a couple that were staying in the next room in Antonio's Pension, Matala. I introduced them to Palkias, and I think they then stayed there for the rest of their holiday instead of moving on as they had intended.

we're lucky as we've always had a car when we needed it, but when we've used the bus service i've always enjoyed it, it's a nice change to sit in the passenger seat and look over the edge!
it's a shame you're not in crete when we are, we'll certainly be going to matala to meet some friends towards the end of may

That might be so - but we are NOT beach people - never spend any time on a beach. And THAT proves just how good Plakias is considering that it's prime asset is considered to be its beach.

we're finding ourselves spending less and less time on the beach as well, last september we only managed one full day on the beach out of fourteen
